I was going to wait for the SIM free option but if the modem is same in all carrier variants then I guess i'll just order at 3am.
According to Apple (when you configure a phone for purchase) all of the phones that you pay full price for are unlocked phones but they ship with a sim based on the carrier you choose.

I can confidently say I 100% do not agree with this.

Samsung OLEDS look rich but over saturated colours, Apples OLED’s just seem flat and aren’t as clear to read the home screen as LCD. IMO.
Ok.
I think you haven’t experienced the OLED screen on Max. It’s day and night difference from the Last LCD iPhone. IMO

That's interesting. I haven't seen an iPhone with OLED up close and person, so I have no personal experience.

However, I'm fine with LCD and refuse to pay the difference to get what many call (perhaps rightly so) the superior screen. The XR with 128GB (64GB is too restrictive for me) will be $799. The XS doesn't have a 128GB option (for its premium price, 128GB should be the $999 storage option, IMO), so I would have to jump to the 256GB XS, and that would hike the price to $1149. I realize there are a few other things, unimportant to me, that one gains with the XS over the XR, but that $350 difference is too much to gain the only thing I may care about, OLED, not to mention possibly having poorer reception.

Given current events will wait for reviews, from end users. Being a VR|46 nut, I’d love a yellow 128gb, but the size is larger than I really want. If reviews are stellar, I would consider. But not until end user reviews are out.

I was playing with one for over an hour yesterday, it’s really not that amazing and certainly not worth the cost, I have my phones set to zoomed screen and bold text, and with those settings the 8 Plus was noticeably clearer to read and better.
Everyone has different eyes and needs though.

It's not a day difference. It's a night difference. Literally. ;)

I have an OLED TV and it's totally awesome in a low light environment. That's where the biggest advantage of OLED comes in, the wondering rich blacks, and consequently the great contrast.

The problem is that in a bright environment, much of that benefit is lost. It doesn't look much better than LCD in such a bright environment. Also, in a dim environment, Apple/Samsung's OLEDs use PWM to decrease the brightness, which can cause discomfort for some people.

Obviously, people use OLEDs in many different types of environments but if your usage is mostly in a relatively bright environment, then the differences between OLED and LCD are much smaller. I think the main benefit for my usage of Apple's OLEDs is the comparatively high pixel density, vs. iPhone 8 and XR. I can see the increased crispness of the OLED over the iPhone 8, particularly on small text. However, the crispness of the 8 Plus is identical to the OLED in this scenario.

I'd love to have a high pixel density LCD version of the XS Max for $150-200 less. Instead, Apple offers us a mid pixel density LCD version of the XS Max for $350-450 less, but missing a camera lens.

Once you go oled there’s no way back.

I had the XS for a full weekend, and I was not impressed overall. I think Apple waited as long as they possibly could before introducing OLED, because they knew it wasn't ready for prime time.

I suffered immensely from the PWM issue, so it was a no brainer for me to take it back. However, even if that had not been the case, I was very much disappointed with the color shifting when you moved the screen to any angle at all, a real blue hue. Granted, the OLED panel produced great vibrant colors and true black's.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think OLED is as great of a panel technology as most due to it's severe limitations for me with the PWM and off axis color shifting. I'm really hoping Apple can address both of these issues in future iterations.

I think I’m going to wait for the XR 128gb. My brother works at an Apple store and said he can get one for me at 25% off.

If you get 25% off, you should get the Max.

You get a higher nominal discount and the Max will likely hold higher resale value in the future.

The Max in Canada starts at $1519. That’s outrageously expensive for a phone. Plus I don’t have very big hands so it would likely be too big for me.

Now that’s a bargain!!

Yeah it would be $931.40 after discount and tax. Still expensive for a phone but it is what it is.

And $1729 for more than 64 GB, which works out to $1954 with tax in Ontario. Ouch.

Yeah the 512gb Max is $1999. That’s insane. I’d much rather put that money towards a new Mac. My MacBook Pro 13” is 4 years old now.

Speaking of Macs... Interestingly, the 12" MacBook 256 GB and the iPhone XS Max 256 GB are both CAD$1729 ($1954 after tax).

I'm preordering. I need a new phone as soon as possible. I'm going with the black, because I know I won't get bored of it (maybe because it's already boring?).

Not sure about the storage. I was thinking 128 GB but I'm planning on keeping this phone for a while and I want room for FLAC audio files so maybe the 256...

Unless Apple’s low-frequency implementation of pulse-width modulation gives your eyes PTSD. Then going “back” is actually a no-brainer.

That's exactly the boat I was in, unfortunately. I hadn't read about PWM really much at all before ordering, so I had purchased an Xs and after a week of use just couldn't figure out why my eyes hurt- my actual eyeballs- as well as having a headache that started behind my eyes and spread from there pretty much constantly throughout the week. I tried adjusting brightness and the white point and it didn't help much. So after looking online and seeing some others with similar symptoms I suspected it might be PWM sensitivity, so I went a few more days just to see if it maybe was a coincidence and would maybe go away while continuing to use my BEAUTIFUL new phone. But it didn't, so sadly on the last day of my 14 day return policy I went in to AT&T store and returned my Xs, exchanging it for an 8Plus. After the eye pain subsided I noticed no new symptoms as I began using this device- and I really didn't/don't see that the screen is much lower quality than that of the Xs anyway, so I'm pretty happy. The additional up side was that I got this and my wife's Xs on the BoGo plan, so with the exchange my 8Plus is essentially free.

But for down sides, obviously I do feel bummed out not being able to keep the Xs- it was an amazing phone, it looked beautiful, that screen covering the entire front, the great camera, and it's a bit of a bummer to now be 1 generation behind.
