SUCCESS!!! I FINALLY got the Mini to boot from the 10.4.2 disk!
FAILURE!!! It doesn't recognize the SSD. *#@?!#**#?@!!!

Any more ideas?

It doesn't recognize the SSD.
Does Disk Utility (in the Utilities menu, accessible after booting from the disc) see it? If so you need to partition and format it. A single partition, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is sufficient. The installer should see the drive then.

Thanks for reporting your progress. It makes it more rewarding to try and help people here.

It sounds like you got it all figured out. Once you get everything installed the way you want, I would suggest that you clone the drive (i.e. to another mini or external firewire disk). Then you have a backup and quick/easy way to rebuild a system.

I'm not sure about having it "all figured out". For some reason, all my I Life software (I Photo, Garageband, etc.) can't be upgraded because the software is in the wrong location in my Applications folder. I'm not sure how this happened or how to fix it. My first instinct is to erase it all, and re-install it. Any ideas?

Cloning a drive is different than a regular backup, correct? Cloning preserves the apps and files both, as opposed to just a regular file backup, is this correct?

Can you post a screenshot?

Cloning makes an exact copy of the original drive and preserves everything. OS, apps, files.

I hope this helps.

The iPhoto 6.0.6 update requires iPhoto 6.0.5 to be present at /Applications/iPhoto.app. Is your iPhoto version 6.0.5? If it isn't...

The iPhoto 6.0.5 update requires iPhoto 6.0.4.

The iPhoto 6.0.4 update doesn't say which version of iPhoto 6.0 is required, so I'd start with this one.

You could also just hook up the machine to the Internet and let Software Update do all the work. :)

My iPhoto is 6.0.4. I missed the 6.0.5 update. Got that straightened out.

I think you're right. I'll turn it loose on the internet, and see what happens. Thanks for reminding me about SU.

Turn on the Firewall (System Preferences > Security) before - just in case... You'll need to run it several times to pull down everything - Java in particular will have one update after another...

[Why is OS X's firewall turned off by default anyway?]

Well, I didn't turn on the Firewall before I ran SU. So, if someone wants to infect a 16 year old computer/OS that has problems connecting to the internet, I'd say that person really needs to get a life.

Software Update took about a half hour. Today I've been installing all my non-Apple stuff. I had also purchased a 1Gb memory stick for it that didn't work. Its replacement arrived yesterday, so it got installed today as well. This little booger's just about ready to rock!

I found out today that Prosoft no longer manufactures or supports Data Backup 3, the software I used to back up my Mini. Any suggestions for something better?

Just checked on progress of restoration. Mac is apparently hung up, no cursor, just spinning beachball. I'm not sure what to do. I'm afraid to pull the plug, but I don't know how to get everything back on track, or even if it's possible. I'm open to suggestions.

I have CCC, it came with my backup drive. I'm just wondering which would be better to use. Usually when I backup my HD, its either because (A)-I uploaded a bunch of new photos, or (B)-I started a new project. I imagine it takes a while to clone a drive. I know its taking quite a while to restore my new drive.
CCC only takes a while to back up on the first backup - unless you choose to do a full backup each time. You can use CCC to schedule backups and it will backup any changes it detects. You can tell it to delete anything in the backup that does not exist on the source, or you can just have it make incremental backups of whatever is new on the drive. Scheduling can be whatever you want it to be.

Lastly, it can back up to network drives, disk images or attached drives. I use it to keep daily backups to my NAS and weekly backups to Dropbox. All my backups are sparse disk images (they take up less space). I'd use sparsebundles, but for various reasons that has a tendency to get screwed up.

If you back up to disk images you can move them wherever you like and restore directly from those disk images.

I'm sorry. I edited my post #91, so posts #92 & #93 are replying to what I deleted.

Anyway, I fixed the problem in post #91. I turned the Mac off, counted to 5 and turned it back on. Chime! So I restarted the restore process again, and it seems to be working...

Still no luck. I think I know what I did wrong, but I won't know for sure until I try again.

Which I am. I just started the whole process over again. Hopefully, the third time's the charm.

Are you using this Prosoft Data Backup 3 or some other software to restore?
What does a backup created made by the software look like on your backup drive? If it's just the actual folders and files within a folder or disk image, you should be able to restore the things you need manually by simply copying them back to the new SSD in Finder, assuming they've been properly backed up in the first place.

Yes. I'm using DB3 to restore the files, and yes, they are folders with files. BUT, if I do it manually, I can't access any files newer than 2015. I don't know why. However, I DO have a download on a USB drive of all my latest stuff (I think), so I might have to go that method. Drive is still grinding from last night. According to DB3, SSD is about 1/3 restored.

And so I wait.

Hope it goes well this time! What drive are you using for backups by the way (do you have a link)? Just wondering why the restore process is so slow.

Well, after 37 hours (!), I finally have successfully restored my drive. The only problem being that the files are in the wrong place. Somehow I need to get the files from the user file in the "System" folder, to the user file that the Mac uses all the time. Does that make sense? For example, if I click the iPhoto icon in the dock, iPhoto opens, but there are no photos. My user file has no pictures in it. But if I click on my Mac HD icon, open it up, scroll down to the "System" folder, open it, and scroll down to the "Users" file, open it, click on my name, and there are all my files! I need to copy/move these to make them more easily accessible. What is the easiest way to do this, and how can I tell if I'm doing it right?

In case you're wondering, this is another plea for HELP!
