Only the camera? let's list out the other stuff samsuck beats apple:

* Samsung pay - hands down #1
* MicroSD expansion
* battery life
* head phone jack - includes premium headphones
* IP68
* Camera FEATURES and quality - dual camera recording, voice activated shutter, assignable camera buttons, full manual controls, the list goes on...
* build quality - curved glass front and back, just beautiful.
* Bluetooth 5
* OLED display
* NFC full functionality
* LED indicators
* Wide angle/pano selfie front camera
* wireless fast charging, USB-C fast charging

That's just off the top from using the damn thing.

Apple has some pro's over samsung:
* incredibly stable iOS
* optimized like a mutherfu...
* app and app quality is superior
* Find my friends and iOS re activation lock
* ease of use
* battery life on the + model
* NVME - everything just loads FAST. Superior to any android device in actual day to day use.

Argue what you will about android but after using it for a few years now especially a samsung there are times I can tell you that android is just like a PC - it works amazing but just that level of refinement and some quirks like in emergency use you don't want your device doing weird sht.

Having a fun time reading all this. As a Google>Apple fan but using an iPhone because I find Android not quite there yet - I see this as a good thing really. Without competition Apple would not change much.

My Note 3's camera was HORRIBLE. The S4s at the time were horrible. Going to the Hollywood bowl and seeing all of the Samsung users try to take photos in low light and wonder why it took 4+ seconds to take a photo was embarrassing - while all the Apple users were happily snapping away. Yes, I helped 5+ samsung users turn off that stabilization feature that made taking photos in low light impossible.

Yes, that was awhile ago - I see now that things are a lot faster but from what I've seen - Apple is still a bit faster. Yes, Samsung has a billion features in their camera - I miss that but I don't have time to spend to deal with Android. Just spent hours a few nights ago trying to resurrect a friend's Note 4 because an update bricked it.

The camera is probably the #1 thing I do with my phone. I take thousands of photos a month (I share just a few with family only) -- I use the camera mostly as a second brain - for memory since my own brain is so limited - and Google Photos stores them for free so why not? Seeing Samsung contend with Apple for the best camera is pretty cool. Hope this makes everyone else work that much harder.

Taking legible photos in low light is probably my #1 complaint.

I always find it funny how everyone goes on and on about the cameras on these phones. Anyone that is truly serious about pictures and wants top quality when going to an event or something should have a true camera they use for that. Yeah, it's nice to be able to take decent quality shots with your phone, but I don't see why so many look at it as a make or break feature.
I've got a mid-range DSLR and a very nice point-and-shoot. Do you know what I use for 90% of my photos? My iPhone 7+. Just last week, there was a moment that I wanted to capture, but instead of telling the kids to stop what they were doing while I go and grab my DSLR, I pulled out my phone, set it to Portrait mode, and got some amazing photos. I for one love seeing the progress made with the phone cameras, and am amazed at it. True, there are certain instances where my dedicated cameras are the way to go, but if I can capture spontaneous moments with my phone and they look 75% as good as my DSLR, I'm a happy camper.

Now, how about those batteries?.. do they explode before or after you take that superior low level photo?

The S7 didn't have issues with the battery.

Having used an iPhone 7 Plus and a Galaxy S8+, their special optimization doesn't seem better than the non optimized OS.

Samsung actually should be commended for their handling of the battery issues. They introduced thorough testing procedures and encouraged the industry to do the same. So far nobody took the challenge (including Apple).

I'll give them that. That is true. They kind of had to though being in the spotlight of the media and all.

Not really related: That said, Samsung's batteries have always been a weak point for me. First thing I did with my Note 3 was buy another battery for it because after 4-5 months the original OEM battery had less than 50% capacity. Most of my other Samsung owning coworkers had to do the same. The number of iPhone 4s I see out in the wild with near 1000 cycles and still usable battery life astounds me. Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro ($500+) battery just stopped charging.

Just wish there was advancement in battery life like there is in camera quality. I really really wish.

Actually blaming the copilot not the device, but let's not let some good hyperbole in the middle of the discussion. Last I checked though 6s hasn't been banned.

It would have been more commendable given if this happened prior to the note 7 incident.

Samsung's new flagship Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones went on sale today in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and Korea, as the company looks to rebound from last year's Note7 debacle. Samsung will be encouraged by the record one million pre-orders it has already taken in Korea alone, while analysts are predicting global sales to reach at least 45 million units.

The 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch devices cost $725 and $825, respectively, which gets users an OLED screen that takes up 80 percent of the front of the handsets. Online reviews appeared earlier this week praising the phones' Infinity Display, but several marked them down for the relocation of the fingerprint scanner to the rear of the devices, right alongside the camera lens.

The camera itself has received less coverage, as it's actually the same 12MP dual pixel module as the one that appeared in last year's Galaxy S7. However, Samsung has tweaked the software powering the f/1.7 lens in an attempt to improve image processing. To compare the results with those of the iPhone 7 Plus, Tom's Guide posted a selection of side-by-side comparison shots taken with the two rival phones.

Overall, the Galaxy S8 came out on top, but only by a slight margin. Despite lackluster macro performance with the S8, both phones' bright light results were said to be generally equal, but Samsung's new device bested the iPhone 7 Plus in well-lit nighttime and low-light shots, offering "generally richer" colors, sharper subjects, and "significantly more detail" in indoor and outdoor tests.

Screen-Shot-3-1-800x461.jpg

Despite the higher megapixel count of the S8's front-facing camera (8MP versus 7MP on the iPhone 7), Apple's phone was deemed to take sharper selfie shots with richer colors, while the two phones were tied in 4K 30fps video tests, although the S8's audio was said to be slightly cleaner.

Apple is thought to be testing a new dual-lens camera system similar to the iPhone 7 Plus for this year's upcoming OLED iPhone, which will have a Samsung-made display. Rumors suggest the front-facing camera of the iPhone 8 will use a "revolutionary" 3D-sensing system capable of identifying the depth and location of subjects, which could be used for facial and iris recognition or in future augmented reality features.

You mean
"Because the gap between a phone camera and a 'serious' camera is getting closer and closer for average users."

Its not that hard for good light photography and phone cameras have come on leaps and bounds. But put the two side by side for low light (or tough lighting) conditions and they are still worlds apart.

I'd say that phone cameras are on par with point and shoot cameras.

but considering the life times of both types of products.

go back ten years and go look at the 1-2 MP cameras the first iPhones had, or the completely trash camera's older flip phones used to have. considering in 10 years we went before sub-360p resolution on cameras and not even able to record video, to having 4k quality recording devices in our pocket.

looking at cameras on phones where you were lucky to have .5x zoom and resolution so bad you couldn't accurately ID a person from more then 10 feet away, to a 10x zoom or quality photo like either of these devices have provided?
thats in a decade.

now take the same time frame, and take the normal point and shoot cameras, there has been a relatively small change. the largest change I've seen is actually more with the screens on most digital cameras then the actual pictures itself (have a beautiful DSLR, but having a 3.5inch pixelated screen, so you cant accurately see the picture quality until you get home to look at the photos or the Raws themselves for example) but the actual photo quality itself has not changed that much.

now of course nobody is expecting iPhone cameras to every take Better pictures then a professional grade camera, thats just silly. but the gap has gotten to the point where, why even buy a standard "point-and-shoot" camera for a 100-400$ when you can literally have a phone that does that.

now again, 10 years ago? could you even imagine making a photo album for a long family vacation with the Camera on a Motorola Razor? or the original iPhone? or literally ANY device between up until 2010+?
theres a reason people still paid good money for even basic point and shoot camera to keep with them.

now i can literally pull out a phone, record in 4k quality, take amazing 4k quality photos and have a 2x optical/10x digital zoom?

nobody is saying that a professional photographer is going to be using these for any serious work, but the days of buying disposable cameras for your kids school trips, or investing in a digital camera to bring on vacation, or to use to capture your kids ballet recital or band concert are over. not only is the phone the camera, but its also the photo editor, the Social media platform and the Large storage device all in one now. and the best part is? you literally already have it with you for 85% of the day.

The S8 blows the 7+ away. Apple really needs to step it up because the meh design and limited new features doesn't seem encouraging.

Have you seen a Samsung phone lately? Their design has gotten a lot better, its all metal and glass now. You should walk into a Best Buy and take a look and get informed.

It would be a bit of a walk, I am in the UK :D

Yes, I've seen Samsungs - my friend is obsessed with them - I see the new model every year, and no, materials alone do not equate to a justifiably logical reason to buy a device. Samsung is a morally bankrupt company, short on innovation and high on gimmickry.

I am very informed, thanks for that, but since you don't have any way of knowing my level of experience or knowledge, I'll happily dismiss it, no problem :)
[doublepost=1492816424][/doublepost]Possibly the ONLY thing I'll credit Samsung as having the intelligence to do, is to hire Casey Neistat for their campaigns. He's amazing, very inspirational... so they could learn from him, as they lack that IN SPADES.

"Need to" - what, you NEED new features just for the sake of having the, JUST because Samsung have them? :/ okkkkkkk

Okay, we'll pass the message on, thank you.

Your post said Samsung phones are cheap and made of plastic. They haven't made a new plastic phone in 3 years.

I've stripped down more phones than many people - I don't know how much you know, nor how many you've had to repair yourself, but their is a GARGANTUAN chasm between the logical, sensible layout and modular, repair-friendly components and tapped metal mounting bosses and metal internals of Apple iPhone, and the flimsy schwimsy disposable crap found inside most of the Android handsets on sale.

Having seen the internals of the S8/S8+, however, it is refreshing that they're learning, and are now using alooooooooooooominum internal mounting bosses, cast into the chassis, but the fact that iFixit give both phones a 4/10 repairability score, doesn't look good. The 7 Plus gets 7/10... and before you get to that stage of DIY, you get Apple's incredible, forgiving and discretionary warranty and their "swap out right now" policies.

S8/S8+ internals seem to have LOTS of glue... ewwww...

The internal beauty of how a device is designed logically and in a modular manner, is only truly appreciated by a hardware engineer.

I agree with a lot of what you were saying and I want a smaller camera to replace my DSLR. But that has not happened yet in mirrorless cameras and is no where near in phones which was the point i was responding to.

I was clarifying just like you were that for the average person a camera phone is now good enough and all they need.

I carry a phone camera every day and it has replaced my point and shoot camera. A phone camera for DSLR uses now has to add optical zoom and a bigger sensor both of these have a lot of physics to contend with. Perhaps some sort of hybrid where I can tag on a sensor and lens module but done in an "Apple" way.
