Phone prices r getting out of hand

Not really. Amortise the cost of the device over it's expected lifetime and it's fairly reasonable. I'll have had 36 months of use out of my iPhone 6 Plus by the time I think of upgrading it - that works out as $749/36 = $20p/m. Pretty reasonable imo! The hardware lasts so much longer these days that regular upgrades are for people with more money than sense or just a lack of sense in general.

Given that you can buy a functional Android smartphone for $60 new from Amazon, I'm not sure that undercutting the iPhone is going to be enough.

As for Apple, people who up upgrade every year, will still upgrade every year to iPhone. And folks using the 6 or older will upgrade as well. That is enough users to meet Apple's sales targets at launch. And I suspect these rumored high costs for the 8 are going to be coupled with high ram, so the price compared to current 256gb models isn't going to be that different.

Because a $60 Android phone compares in any way to a flagship Android device.. come on..

That's like saying an iPhone is an iPhone and giving someone an iPhone 5C rather than an iPhone 7 Plus. The two experiences are barely comparable.

Maybe Apple has been seeding FUD (like the original price of the iPad) where we all assume it to be >$1000, then are shocked and apppreciative when it comes in at $850?

Of course they have to undercut Apple this time, after the colossal failure of the Note 7 and the disappointing S8.

An used iPhone 8 will be worth gold after one year compared to the S8.
You failed to understand what that "undercut" means. It simply means they aren't raising the price of the S8 as high as the rumored price of the iP8. It doesn't mean they're lowering it. It's actually going to be a little bit more than the S7.

I agree with your basic premise, with the caveat that a 5C is going to be a much closer experience to an iPhone 7 than any $60 Android to a flagship Android from any manufacturer.

Even 799€ for a smartphone might be pushing it nowadays. The technology has been there for over 10 years and it is not as a 5-10% in overall speed gain for new models makes such a big deal to the majority of users.

"...launching alongside more typical "S" cycle iPhone models to succeed the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus."

Well, iPhone 6, 6S and iPhone 7 all have looked pretty similar, so design-wise the big changes were with these models: iPhone 1 > 3G > 4 > 5 > 6

As iPhone 7 already has a smaller design shift from 6/6S, it would be nice of Apple to come up with something fresh for all screen sizes, from 4" upwards.

Someone should start a service filling in the values for the following rudimentary equation for a wide variety of electronic devices:

(Backend Cost to bring to market) + (Material Cost) - (Individual Unit Retail Price) = (Net profit)
Number of units produced

title of this article is not correct.they are not undercutting the iPhone as we don't know the price and it's more expensive then the gs7 was.

the title should read Samsung is also increasing it's price on it's premium flagship phones.not undercutting the iPhone 8 to make it look like Samsung is trying to win a customer over 40 dollars

While direct currency conversions are no guarantee of actual prices outside of Europe, the phones still look likely to undercut Apple's upcoming 5.8-inch OLED iPhone by some margin.

True, no guarantee at all. A 128 Gb iPhone for instance costs me (the Netherlands) a whopping 879 (tax included), which equals $945. In the US, I could have payed 749, ex taxes. Including NYC taxes (for instance), would bring it up to $815. Still over a $100 difference...

I know better (better than you apparently) and this will most likely be my next phone. I guess that makes me an idiot:rolleyes: in the mind of cardfan. I am disappoint.

I think Samsung have stepped up their game in the last couple of years, as an iPhone user i have to admit that those images look good however what lets Samsung down is Touch Wiz and Android, if Samsung did the same as Apple by making the hardware and the software (without Android) then i really think it could be an iPhone competitor but as it stands i wouldn't buy one. 2 things would be great for Samsung

1. Regular updates like Apple do with IOS (better security updates as well)
2. Making their own OS rather than just putting it on top of Android (clean up Touch Wiz a lot)

Price wise i'm not really bothered about, the reason i'm happy to spend more on Apple products is because of the quality, lack of problems i have and the excellent customer service. If the iPhone 8 packs in everything that has so far been rumoured i won't have a problem paying £1000 for one.

Hello... my name is Clive Bixby...

I'm not a fan of the curved display thing especially the round corners - it bothers me visually. Apart from that though it does look clean and nice so not bad from Samsung.
Shame about the OS though as that will never make me wanna buy one unless Apple gets too greedy (they are approaching that though)

and I agree, prices of the phones are getting crazy. $1000 for a smartphone? Please, that is just way too much.

I think you will find that consumers aren't really all that price-sensitive when it comes to iPhones, so I doubt a price cut would affect sales of iPhones all that much.

If anything, the iPhone probably faces more competition from older iPhone models than any other android smartphone model out there. Even if they are flagship phones like the S8.

I'm surprised the marked is as elastic as it is. I thought the game changer (for the US) was when carriers ended subsidies and dropped the 'per line' price. For our family that quickly changed the way we bought phones. My wife, mom, and mother-in-law likely won't upgrade their phones until they die. A 'phone is a phone' to them. Even my son and daughter will keep their phone a minimum of 3 years. (Unless they are paying for the upgrade.) My son has talked about buying a used phone (money that'll go to the secondary market, not Apple.)

I'm on the fence myself. The 'big leaps' are gone and changes seem incremental. There hasn't been a 'killer feature' since the larger screen. And that was Apple playing 'catch up.' If they could ever crack the battery riddle, that would win me over in a heartbeat.

Sounds like more of a mess then. Bloatware, missing google features, hardly any updates. A shame the unwashed masses don't know any better but it's the cheaper option for them.

The way screen is curved on the sides and the way they rounded the corners just screams cluelessness.
