I got the Fold 8 today but not gelling with it. I must be one of the few people that prefer the form factor of the Fold 7 / Fold 8 Ultra. Maybe it needs some getting used to?

I understand, I was a Fold book style user for last 7 years and a 95% inner screen user.

So using the F8 passport format for the inner screen took a little time and I find I still tend to rotate often to portrait more 🙂

The outer screen I now use far more than I ever did previously

Tell us more. This is very interesting to me. I owned Fold 2, 4 and now 5 (the 5 is not my daily driver). So I’m curious what details on the 8 irk you compared with the previous.

If I’m not impressed with Apple’s foldable on Wednesday, would i be insane for upgrading my iPhone 15 Pro Max to the 18 Pro Max (especially if the rumours of big camera upgrades are true) and buying the Fold 8 instead.

Any one else waiting to see what Apple announce on Wednesday? Ie the foldable.
Not really insane; I upgraded my 16 Pro to the Air and don’t regret it at all.

I bought a Fold 5 for $388 a couple weeks ago and am using it off-plan until the iPhone Fold hits gen 2 most likely.

I'm 1 month in with my Fold8 and it is my first Fold but yeah i do notice occasional stutter/hesitation in animations, app opening/closing, swuping down notification bar etc Gut feeling is that it's more common when unfolded. Framedrops in the middle of a animation is a bit jarring for such a premium device. Sidenote during setup the only thing i transferred from my S26 with Smart Switch was my Samsung and Google account and pictures/videos. No settings or apps or other stuff.

The not so smooth experience combined with my eyes struggling a bit with how text appears when unfolded and me unable to find a suitable size/setting has made me consider parting with it. I do love the front screen - so pleasing to have a device i can reach each corner on without excessive fingergymnastics and fear of it slipping out of my grip.

I have the Oppo Find X9 and while i have annoyances with it the fluidity and animations etc are amazing. No hesitation or out of place animations anywhere. Kind of reminds me of iOS of way back when, or atleast what my brain has convinced me of. Went to a store today and tried out the Pixel 11 Pro and was blown away by how smooth everything felt on it, felt very comparable to the X9.
Microstutters is a really good word to describe it. Also, the scrolling is janky in apps like Instagram.

Maybe I'm not imagining things, because I think I experience it more when the phone is unlocked. A place where it almost always happens is when I tap on a text field and the Google keyboard appears, that animation is quite choppy/janky 😿.

What do you find annoying about the Find X9?

I LOVE my Fold8, but I hate Android apps. They just don't feel polished AT ALL compared to their iOS counterparts. And it's even more apparent when you attempt to use them in tablet mode. Especially when you have to force them into it.

But I do love all the customizations options One UI offers. Particularly all the goodies inside Good Lock.

I agree with this, but it’s not Androids fault. Developers tend to gravitate more towards IOS and making apps more polished, probably because there isn’t as many different iPhones as there are Android phones.

I’m hoping this will be one of the good things about the foldable iPhone, that they have optimised the apps well for when the foldable is folded and using the outer display but also when unfolded and using the bigger display. I’m not holding much hope for much multitasking tho.

Good Lock is a very good app for Samsung phones, i wish there was something similar for Pixel devices.

Texting on the outside screen is fine, it takes a little getting used to typing as the button sizes are different to the Fold 7 format. One of my main annoiances was when you are typing on the outside screen you can barely see a couple of lines of text above the keyboard, whereas on the Fold 7 and similar you can see alot more above the keyboard.

I hope Samsung does not make the Fold 8 any bigger physically. I feel it's perfect right now. The beauty of this phone is the compact size for a Fold. The only thing they can do, if they feel the need for a bigger cover display, is to go completely 100% bezel-less. This would make the cover display a true 5.5 inches. Right now they call it 5.5 inches, but that includes the bezels. Although, zero bezels could cause touch issues.

You can resize the keyboard and remove the toolbar to help 🙂

Appreciate that, but the smaller the keyboard the more the mistakes, the larger I make the keyboard the less I can see of the screen! lol.

I think the 8 Ultra is simply the one for me so I think I am going to have to sell this. If anyone wants a 1 day old 256gb Graphite Fold 8 fully boxed drop me a DM!

Can you not return for a refund?

A question for Fold owners: I assume the crease develops when the fold is folded. Do you guys leave the phone unfolded at night to reduce pressure on the fold? Just curious...

I only leave mine open when I'm working behind the desk and I always have it folded when I charge overnight, I upgrade yearly so no noticeable crease issue with it looking worst.

I have it on a stand by my desk

"To crease" is synonymous with "to fold." A crease is intentionally there and will become more pronounced with age. You will never notice it when the screen is on, but if you have OCD then it might bother you... but then again, so will the corners of the screen protector, pocket lint in the speaker grill, etc. I don't think the crease can "repair" itself with being stretched out overnight. Samsung marketing might want us to think it is self-healing, but I think that's just a placebo effect.

I think you need to be careful with the Fold 8 Ultra as the KB may not be significantly larger than the adjusted/reduced size on the F8 to gain more screen, as its a function in part of the width available.

All you will gain for sure with the F8 Ultra is more visible screen because its taller but the KB will be narrower for your big hands 🙂

I don't and I can't say I ever noted any degradation on the size of the crease over time, but then I do upgrade yearly 🙂

However I did see a note somewhere that Samsung said leaving the Fold open for extended periods does help to restore crease back to factory condition.

Yeah, I tend to leave mine open during the night… but it’s more so that I don’t see a reason to close it.
