So pretty much, as long as the game reso is set to something under 1600, it should run fine right?

Lag and the issues are only at maxed reso?

On most games that is (edit)

Well if BF3 runs at 1440x900 with 60fps consistant (high settings) then most games should work just fine. Since bf3 is one of the most demanding game, i feel great knowing i can play any game at 1440x900 (or higher depending on the game) and get around 60 fps.

For games like torchlight 2, etc etc. I can turn the resolution up.

Great link, really impressed! 60fps on 1440x900 on high was more then i dreamed for, so thats awesome

Yep, we'll get good fps. The question is how will they look because that's scaled. If we're gonna play on 1440x900, wouldn't the non-Retina MBP be a better choice, visual wise?

well he says 1440x900 looks great in youtube comments, so thats something.

he was asked if it was blurry.

"Nice one mate, so the best resolution is the 1440x900, is the game blurry at this resolution?"

"nope, looks great. i got 60fps at 1440x900 and 40fps on 1920x1200, less than 10fps at 2880x1800 lol"

Does anyone have any problems with WoW resetting the OS resolution? I'm trying to play on 1920x1200 but it keeps changing the OS resolution and as a result all in game text looks blurry. Works fine on windowed mode, but not on windowed fullscreen and fullscreen.

I haven't read all the 11pages but have anyone with the retina MBP tested StarCraft 2 4v4 or FFA games?
Also have anyone tested if the MadCatz Street Fighter 4 Tournament Edition Stick works with it in BootCamp?

I have a question I haven't seen answered yet - how does the RMBP deal with legacy resolutions? I'm a game developer and often play games in modes like 640x480 - please could anyone tell me it's still supported? In OSX and Win7? That's kind of a deal-breaker for me (even though I have one on order!)
It's fine.... The display will scale the image full screen. This is the same functionality that has been performed for years on the pc and mac side of things.

Exactly... which is why "it looks good" doesn't cover those questions. Because what people are really asking for is if they can get the native resolution "look" at lower resolutions, and the simple answer is no, obviously. But it also means that for anything that either doesn't support the native retina resolution or where the laptop isn't fast enough to drive it, it will look like crap.

Technically it shouldn't be blurry. It might look a little jaggy without AA. I'm sure it's more than acceptable considering it's a 650M. I'm really concerned about heat.

Well, I promise whenever mine arrives that I'll bootcamp it and take some snapshots at 1440x900 of text & games so everyone can see whether or not it scales blurry as hell (like all other scaling) or if it's crisp as it's 1:4.

Technically you are correct however it's worth noting that there's no difference between the way that would look on a Retina display and a non Retina display. In other words, there's really nothing Apple can do. The developer can allow for Anti-Aliasing which will help the image quality quite a bit, but at the end of the day it's not Apple's fault.

In fact, it's easy to see that the image benefit from the other advantages of the retina display, ie. improved contrast and black levels, higher pixel density, etc... So, when comparing a low resolution source on the Retina and non Retina display's, the Retina should have a very slight advantage. It will still look like crap, but that's because the developer didn't enable higher resolution support in their app.

I hope that made sense!

You are absolutely correct, and my rant is not about if apple can do anything, because frankly its the same technology they all use, its the same on all laptops.
The "problem" is that the majority of people with any knowledge of what they are paying $3000 for, will know that most of the time the native resolution of the retina display will not be used, because its either waaaaayy too small to the "small" 15" compared to resolution or... what ever they are doing is not supporting the massive resolution fully. This means most people I bet will leave it at the default setting of 1920x1080 or even 1680x1050, which means the retina display becomes totally pointless, and will look worse because of scaling.

It's just scary to see how many people rave about this amazing "new" apple technology, that has NO idea how this will impact their use of an already expensive laptop, and why this "new" technology is not used on other laptops (yet). There is a reason for that...

Fortunately this is a pretty expensive system and I believe a lot of people using it are running pro apps. And, for the rest if they are using the built in apps they'll benefit from the retina display. Personally, I'm using a variety of legacy applications and they look acceptable to me. I understand that how they look is exactly how they looked before. So, no big deal.

I'm running the stock setting from Apple on my display and I think it looks tremendous.

Do you think the Retina will be able to play and handle games like
Guild Wars 2 or FFXI-V online? Any idea on frame rates or advice to configure settings to get the most out of the machine while gaming.

I won't be gaming to much but if I did here and there it would be one of those 2 games for fun.:p while running boot camp to play them.

Can anyone please try out Assassin's Creed 2/Revelations/Brotherhood on new RMBP and tell me how much fps you got? Please?

Yes valve games dont require that much

barefeats tested the new retina mbp at 2560x1440 with a external display put every setting on highest and got 56fps.

So valve games (source engine) should be fine

i wouldnt worry about heat, last gen mbp got 100 degrees celsius

and from what i have read, this gets around 80, which is good. but because of the alu, it will always feel hot

Why people insist in that Apple makes their laptops for gaming?? They are not on that purpose, they never where and i dont think they ever will....
Do you like gaming, need a laptop, then buy and MSI or something like that, you need to WORK on the computer you just need to get a good mac ;)

NotebookCheck has detailed info on the 650m graphics card, including FPS stats for many modern games. I imagine these tests were done on Windows machines, but shouldn't the RMBP get similar results while running in Windows in bootcamp as long as the resolution isn't set to max?

It's clear that the RMBP isn't the best choice for hardcore gaming, but it seems like a decent choice for average gamers who will be using this as their main machine. You get the benefits of retina-optimized Apps for the majority of your non-gaming needs and can still enjoy modern games in high detail.

I think those benchmarks were done on the ddr3 variant though. From what I've heard the mbp has the ddr5 variant which is much faster.

I don't know if this has been asked yet, but can the OP verify in Bootcamp what the stock clocks and voltage are for the GPU? I just want to see if Apple underclocked or undervolted the card from the reference specs.

Thanks!

Anyone tried the R-MBP with external monitor playing a game?

Hi All,

I'm going to but the new R-MPB in my next visit to the US (planned for the week of July 8th, really hoping to find one in stock). I currently have an iMac 27'' late 2009 and also a MBA 2011 from work. I already tried to use my iMac as an external display with the mini-dp to mini-dp cable and it works just fine.

I plan to buy the R-MPB but use it 60% of the time with the iMac as an external display. I wonder if anyone tried that configuration, especially while playing a game and can comment on how well it works.

Thanks.

I theoretically agree with you, however there are a number of forum members who disagree in practice. Some forum members claim to have the classic anti-glare high-res 1680x1050 screen and the new Retina macbook and the general consensus is that the Retina looks sharper despite the scaling.

Off topic: Some people (me in particular) want only one laptop, and that laptop should run OS X for every day things. I also wan it to play the occasional game. Booting into Windows is acceptable.

IMO Apple makes the best gaming laptops. For the purpose of portable gaming, the alternatives are hardly portable.
