I know this is a Retina thread, but... how do games run on the non Retina MBP with the upgraded screen? I'm guessing pretty well since the resolution is crazy high.

Diablo 3 at 1920x1200 is MESSED UP! (See attachment)

Just so I am clear, I assume you mean -IN- a firefight? Or do you mean while just walking around in town?

I did mean as a minimum including big fights, but just as a sort of rough 'high detail but always playable' benchmark. But just curious really. Not worth investing a whole lotta time in.

Your definition of great differs from my own.

On mine, setting it to that resolution results in MAJOR screen issues (artifacts)!

I did, however do some testing in multiplayer at 1680x1050 with everythign turned to maximum. It seems to NEVER drop below 34 fps, and it looks REALLY good. I'm going to try using this for a while and see if it eventually has issues or not.

Were the fans audible while you were playing? How hot did it get?

Legacy resolutions

I have a question I haven't seen answered yet - how does the RMBP deal with legacy resolutions? I'm a game developer and often play games in modes like 640x480 - please could anyone tell me it's still supported? In OSX and Win7? That's kind of a deal-breaker for me (even though I have one on order!)

Can someone PLEASE make a video of gameplay on the new machines? All we have on YouTube is the usual 30 million unboxing videos (why do some people not know how to open a box, or turn it upside to get a 2 grand laptop out?), anyway if someone can make a video showing Portal 2 and Diablo 3 and then Battlefield 3 that would be fantastic, these are enough to show the machines performance.

U wont be seing much bf3, apple hasnt released drivers because of there is no driver for gt650m (yet) from nvidia. Its to difficult messing with .ini files for the average joe.

And mac performance on games, especially blizzard games is horrible atm compared to windows

I'm going to be ordering the base version of the Retina Pro with the added RAM upgrade.

I was curious. I do most of my gaming on the 360 and PS3, but I'd really like to switch over and play BF3 and D3 (and probably Skyrim w/ mods) on my new MacBook. I don't require every bell and whistle checked while gaming on the Mac, but I'd imagine that playing BF3 on my retina MBP would look and perform a lot better than it does on my 360?

Thanks for the link. So from what I read in the link, you gain 100 MHz, 2 MB L3, and V-Pro (which not sure Apple uses?).

Someone straighten me out here. I went with the 2.7. Mistake?

Only time you will likely notice the difference is when you are doing a lot of video encoding.

$250 isn't that much anyway relative to the price of the computer.

I could record some diablo 3 video if someone could tell me of a FREE tool to do it on OSX. I realize fraps works great under windows, but we can't do windows gaming yet on this device...

you can use iPhone 4S or a 720p video camera on tripod (or modified tripod). I wouldn't use an application do record cuz that application itself will introduce lag.

Ans the MacRumors Genius of the day is...

ninja2000!

Installing now...

Thanks both of you: ninja2000 and Maven1975.

If you guys create a PayPal donation button I will personally donate $20 for your hard works. I have never seen such level of dedication, sacrifice, and contribution from strangers online.

Thank you very much for your kind offer, but your appreciation is enough. These forums are all about helping each other and getting the most from our macs and I have been helped many times myself.

I think unfortunately I will have to go have a look myself at what "looks great" means when people talk about the retina scaling. the thing is, ANY scaling on LCD or LED screens so far is crap, whether peoples personal preference makes it look good or not, if there is scaling its useless for production.

So its really damn important to me and so far people are just hyped about their new toy and very few gives any actual data.

Hello,

I am back. I had a client that had me from San Francisco to Atlanta. Now back in Phoenix and will upload something tonight.

Man... Work sucks when your trying to have fun.

Windows Support Drivers are now being served for bootcamp via Apple. Will install them before the video.

Welcome back. Thought the trolls got the best of you :D. Cant wait to read about your experiences.

True that. Everybody knows that playing games on the Retina at native resolution is gonna suck FPS balls no matter how awesome it'll look. The best case would be to dumb down and scale the resolution. Now, if someone has a lagacy hi-res MBP and put it side by side with a Retina MBP, open a game with both running 1680x1050, I'm sure the lagacy MBP would look better. Owners of both machines please chime in. Maven1975, what do you think?

Wow! I'm so glad Apple released the drivers so fast!

But I won't get my macbook pro retina until the middle of July
