Gartner: Android Tops iOS in 3Q 2010 Global Smartphone Market Share

Posts like this make me laugh. Hard.

There is only 4 iPhones with one being obsolete, and another closing in.

How many Android devices are there? At least 10..

Thats true. Only 1 phone, a few versions of it and one carrier and the iPhone isn't far behind Android with tons of devices, carriers and versions.

Regardless of the numbers, iPhone/iOS is a success.

This shows that Apple may have made a big mistake in having the exclusivity contract with AT&T for so long. Had they allowed the iPhone to be carried by more vendors, maybe iOS would be more widespread.

Android outsold the iPhone by 7 million worldwide, even if the iPhone was on all major carriers in the US it still would have been outsold. Let's keep in mind that the iPhone was on backorder for the whole quarter, so Apple sold every phone they made.

To be fair, there are lots of Android feature phones. I'm not sure if they are counting ipods as iOS. Granted they aren't phones, but I imagine the goal for developers is to get your apps to the largest audience. I'm willing to bet there are still more apps sold in the App Store than the Android Marketplace.

Android has the advantage of being available on múltiple carriers.

The figures are for global sales. The iPhone is available on multiple carriers throughout the world.

Depends on the country. I believe T-Mobile in Germany just recently lost exclusivity, and the US is a big market.

Its not just about cell phone carriers, it is also about the variety of hardware carrying the software. This is how Microsoft stays ahead of Apple; more hardware vendors offering the same software. And I think that the Android platform will be plagued by many of the same issues as Windows. Especially as the platform expands to more devices and Google starts trying to extend functionality to compete with new (possibly unreleased) features on iOS. This is why I will be dumping my HTC Evo as soon as the iPhone is available on another network.

You're right. I also like how Apple curates the App store and iOS, I know many people don't and JB, but I do like it. I like the stability that Apple provides and the rigid rules for developers to ensure a good, smooth and quality product that I don't have to worry about crashing or otherwise goofing up.

Android grows so fast because Samsung has lots of well established sales channels and long term customers. And difference between iOS and Android OS is not big.

Well this is not surprising at all. When you have 20 + different devices to just Apples 4 its not hard to sell more of them.

not surprising seeing as carriers are heavily pushing android handsets and all the high profile bugs on the iphone 4

Yeah I forgot about the backorder ordeal. But that's awesome that they sold every phone they had, providing that they didn't purposefully limit production. I doubt the Android phones have done that.

Given the closed garden approach and multiple design failures of Apple Consumer Electronics w/ the iPhone 4, I'm not surprised.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the day Apple held their sham news conference on the iPhone antenna failure will be seen as the day they lost the mobile OS war.

I do agree with a person who posted above me in that I prefer the quality of the iPhone/iOS over the Android platform. This is why I like Apple products better than any other - quality.

not really

lately i've been seeing ads for a $25 a month Android phone from T-Mo. it's a cheapo phone with a few apps like youtube and facebook. not even sure what else it can take. you're probably not going to get any updates for it either.

a lot of people are perfectly happy with cheap. most chicks i see in starbucks only use facebook on their iphones

Yet, in spite of that fact, it would seem fairly likely that apple is selling far more hardware than any other vendor... Strange...

Sorry guys but use an HTC desire and you know hoe smart an android handy can be....
As good as the Iphone experience!!!

really? You sure? What about nokia? These are global figures not US figures.

That doesn't really make "sense". Based on your logic - it means that people like choices and are more apt to buy/get an android phone because there are options.

If the sample size is 100 people - all 100 could buy an iPhone or they could but any android phone. A larger percentage of people are choosing to NOT buy an iPhone. # of choices doesn't really play into it except to say there are more options.

Now - if you say that Apple only manufactured 100 phones in total to sell, and Android has 200 phones to sell and there are 300 people - then you'd have a point.

Now - all that being said - for those that somehow feel threatened or the need to knock android or praise apple to feel better - what's the point, really?

If Apple was on top of this stat, you'd all be patting each other on the back AND stating that Apple is able to do this with only one phone while Android has several. All silly nonsense.

Enjoy the phone you have and respect the fact that other people enjoy theirs - no matter what phone they have.

Symbian smartphones must be really good. They are on top and you never hear any smack down from fanboys or anything.

I’m using a symbian-based device myself. It’s as much capable as Android or iOS minus the apps galore. If you are corporate user you get all the corporate features like Lotus Notes, Exchange, Communicator for free as well in the package. It’s rather nice but it’s just a phone, nothing more.

I don't know anyone with an Android phone... But I guess 90% of my friends are women, which might skew the results. They tend to not really care about smartphones.

It was quite expected, given that Android phones are now < $10. Google is trying to flood market with android devices to surge their total numbers, so as to tap on mobile advertising.

I believe apple needs to do-
1. Keep enhancing quality of iPhone.
2. Lower the prices so as to capture lower income groups as otherwise they will have no option than android, this includes lower income techies too. Basically they should adopt same approach as they did with Apple TV ( to cheap and quality product to beat, and iPad less expensive for the screen-size).

Yea I'm typing on one right now. And what? I still don't like the look and how android functions. If it wasn't for thr fact that ATT doesn't work at my work place I would never have left iphone. The moment verizon or tmobile gets the iphone this "desire" is going on ebay.....

This shows that Apple may have made a big mistake in having the exclusivity contract with AT&T for so long. Had they allowed the iPhone to be carried by more vendors, maybe iOS would be more widespread.

Two things...

* Apple is a company interested in making money. We don't know that they would have made the money that they have had they not struck the deal they did with AT&T.

* Android is what it is because of the iPhone. Remember the original version was much different than it is now...more like a blackberry or treo. Apple's disruption of the market forced Verizon to change their ways and then use the Android OS.

All in all there is an old saying that you can tell the pioneers by the arrows in their back and to some extent that applies to Apple only so far as having to be exclusive to AT&T in the US. No one but AT&T would let them into the market under Apple's terms which are terms that have now disrupted the market for the better. Apple got a juicy contract out of it and capitalized.

For what it's worth though in my opinion I think Android taking over the market like it has would have happened regardless and part of me could see it becoming the foundation for future feature phones. Many of the signs are there.

And your post made me laugh (good post though). At least 10? It seems like 10 are released each month!

There are currently 82 documented smartphones running Android. This does not include tablets or other devices.

82! That's crazy, especially when compared with the 4 iOS devices that are smartphones.

Over the summer, the EVO was sold out for quite a while. Sprint stop selling them online for a while. I had to wait a few weeks to get one, and that was with having a friend who worked at Sprint telling me when they were coming in.
