Android outsold iOS in one quarter and there's already more Android customers than iOS? I think your math may be flawed.

Exactly, wasn't it a few months ago now when it was announced that the 100 millionth iOS device had been sold and I think there are 300,000 apps in the app store and 4 billion app store downloads. So pretty good customer base.

Interesting, most people I see either have an iPhone, a Blackberry or a non-smartphone. I have almost never seen anyone with an Android device.

I completely agree with the poster who brought up margins. Apple makes more on average on a per device basis than Google. However....

As any psychologist will tell you - perception is reality. Despite the number of purported Android devices, if all everyone ever sees are iPhones then people will continue to believe that Apple is outselling the competition.

The other issue one poster touched on was Apple as a status brand. People don't aspire to own a Droid :p - people want to own iPhones. :D It sort of reminds me of the Fortune interview with John Sculley. When he got to Apple from Pepsi he relayed market research to Steve Jobs about how they'd learned that people with Coke would bring out the can and pour it in front of friends when they asked for a drink where people with Pepsi would pour it in the kitchen and bring out only the glass with the Pepsi in it to their friends leaving the can or bottle in the kitchen.

Posts like this make me laugh. Hard.

There is only 4 iPhones with one being obsolete, and another closing in.

How many Android devices are there? At least 10..

at least 10??? you are being modest.

According to wikipedia there are about 80 android smartphones. It looks like about 75% of them have been released in the past year. So I think it's pretty safe to say extremely conservatively there are still at least 50% of all android smartphones being sold.

That would mean there are at a minimum 40 android smartphones being sold (probably closer to 60). at ALL price ranges, in a large variety of sizes/style, in EVERY market in the world.

The fact that the iphone is even close to that is impressive. I would LOVE to see a stat comparing all individual smartphone sales and see if there is any one smartphone in the world that even is coming close to the iphone 4 sales.

Symbian smartphones must be really good. They are on top and you never hear any smack down from fanboys or anything.

I think they've done well because Nokia really dominates in the phone market in many countries. But they are loosing ground and I think they too, like RIM and MS should be very concerned that Google and Apple are gaining so much market share so quickly.

As for this report... it's great for Apple and Google. It will be interesting to see how Apple can do with more carrier support. But the real thing holding Apple back seems to be production. They are having trouble keeping up now with demand world wide.

I think the most interesting of the recent developments will be to see how well the MS OS does. It's so different from iOS and Google... not sure people will accept it. If it fails, MS is in trouble. The mobile space is the future and Google and Apple are way out in front.

Do we know their cumulative sales figures as well? How much money are google actually making from android?

P.S nice to see a fellow fan of the office!

Two things...

* Apple is a company interested in making money. We don't know that they would have made the money that they have had they not struck the deal they did with AT&T.

True, but if they could have had other carriers after 1 or 2 years with AT&T, it is possible their sales would have increased.
* Android is what it is because of the iPhone. Remember the original version was much different than it is now...more like a blackberry or treo. Apple's disruption of the market forced Verizon to change their ways and then use the Android OS.

Yes. Apple did disrupt the market in a good way. Certainly "revolutionized" the industry and I don't use that word flippantly in this case either.:D

All in all there is an old saying that you can tell the pioneers by the arrows in their back and to some extent that applies to Apple only so far as having to be exclusive to AT&T in the US. No one but AT&T would let them into the market under Apple's terms which are terms that have now disrupted the market for the better. Apple got a juicy contract out of it and capitalized.

For what it's worth though in my opinion I think Android taking over the market like it has would have happened regardless and part of me could see it becoming the foundation for future feature phones. Many of the signs are there.

I do agree with here too. Apple is the pioneer in the tech world and everyone else is still trying to play catch up.

Many of the people I know that had an iPhone now have Android devices. Back in the day, everyone would sing the praises of the iPhone. Now, its more an object of ridicule. I kind of fell silly for still using one and kind of hide it when in public. Guess it all depends.

I know a couple people with an Android phone. After comparing notes, they liked my iPhone better. They thought is was less confusing and I'd have to agree. Their Droid home screen looked like a ransom note! Too much going on and the apps just always seemed to lag in weird ways. It was not smooth like the iPhone.

Google employee?

LOL! Hide your iPhone???? Dude... it's a PHONE! No one cares what you use! "An iPhone user... what a looser!" LOL!

Your comments always kill me and I'd like to know all the ridicule you're talking about???? Everyone I know that does not have an iPhone wants to see mine or wants to get one. I think you need to step away from the forums and join reality.

My iPhone 3GS still draws attention wherever I go. Usually the question is, "is that an iPhone 4?" Once they find out it isn't they still ask questions and gush over my 3GS.

iphone has a reputation of gayness. People are moving away from that

I agree with you on pretty much everything especially when you consider that people don't see an android phone.... they see a samsung galaxy etc, but when you see an iPhone....its an iPhone.

Personally, let the everyone buy what they want. I'm happy to own the best phone and let others struggle. :)

I don't think Apple cares much about this. It's to be expected given that there are dozens and dozens of Android phones on multiple carriers.

I feel like I'm the only one who can enjoy my iPhone without having to trash Android and the need to feel superior.

How come everyone assumes that the variety in choices (that is good for us, the consumers) of different phones is the ONLY reason Anroid sold more?

Crazy isn't it? :D That's why in future I'll stick with sim free phones and choose the price plan that suits me!

Its amazing that people just see the word free and pay a ridiculous amount extra just because they are getting the phone "free"

Sim free is brilliant. Especially for a phone like the iPhone.

As stated 100 times, expected result. If they didn't overtake iOS i would have been shocked, not by this result.

I like Android, on the right phone without all the skins and BS each vendor adds. The recent Galaxy S phone is one of the nicer Android phones since I used the G1 a buddy owned.

Not to mention SJ's ego will drive him to make some great gear to try and keep up, which they won't, with Android. No issue with compeitition, it drives innovation which is always good for the consumer.

I don't trash the Android platform and I know several people who have some flavor of it. Most like it and I know one gal who absolutely hates it. She'd get an iPhone if AT&T had service by her home.

Competition is good for us all. It helps drive innovation.

Interesting numbers.
The comments are even more interesting.

I'm a developer, not a stockholder. So these numbers are more important to me than how many devices run the OS. That just isn't important at all.
