Do they break it down on cost per unit? I'd be willing to bet that 20% of money spent on computers are done so on Macs, given their price premium over 299.99 Dells and the like.

Woo Hoo a post that's not about the iPhone :)

Yeah, except your post.

Lol, good catch ;)

They haven't dropped out of the top six, they haven't featured there since the nineties.

Sure.

But its not like 17% market share is "dominant" world wide.

I think you misunderstood what I meant by "dropped"

Compare the domestic numbers to the world wide numbers. All of them have smaller market share world wide than they do in the US only market.

Apple moved past Toshiba into slot 5 domestically. Toshiba is in slot 5 world wide. Can it be that Apple is number 6?

Honestly, what matters to me as a mac user, is that Apple remains a healthy company with a decent market share to avoid being bought out like Dell or Compaq were. If they move into 15% range that would be great. I don't see any other company close to 50%. And hoping for a monopoly would be just silly.

I think Apple is in good shape. That's why I own stock in it. And I prefer OS X over Windows myself.

I realize some people want Apple to take a dive. For some reason it would make them feel better if people like myself had to switch to Windows. It's a control issue.

Yes, I noticed just after I posted.

If you take another look Toshiba is actually in the number 6 position.

I'm not hoping for Apple to take a dive. The last worldwide sales figures I heard had Apple just under 5% so they are not that far from the top 6. They had dropped down to just over 2% 5 years ago so they are not doing too badly. :)

okaaaay. So Toshiba took Apple's spot 2 quarters ago based upon all the netbooks they sold, but now that Apple is selling millions of iPads, they DON'T include those in Apple's numbers?!?!

lame.

A huge jump in these statistics would surely make all the Apple lovers happy, but I think it is not in Apple's best interest. As long as Dell, HP, Acer and Toshiba can believe that Apple is behind, that keeps them happy and keeps them from competing harder. If Gartner published numbers including iPads, or sales in dollars, or profits, these companies' share holders would want some serious changes.

the only reason it is climbing near 10% is because Apple force you to use a Mac to create apps if you want to get involved in the iPhone business. I guarantee no one will buy a Mac for the sole purpose of using it like a window desktop.

Damn! Image what this would be like IF Apple really was trying to upgrade their computers and their OSX on a reasonable timeframe? Instead of they're obsessed with their iCrap and their antenna from hell. What a damn shame!

However it's very nice the see that MACrumors actually put MAC news on their front page.

Why would anyone want to use it "like a windows desktop"? We use Mac OS because we prefer it to windows. Why would we want to reproduce the other OS?

Gosh, I sure hope 10% isn't the magic threshold when those wily hackers out there finally notice we exist and start flooding our Macs with viruses.

Windoze Bloze

Apple can thank MS and their clunky OS for helping fuel the ascension of the Mac.

Thank you Microsoft for putting out absolute rubbish!!!

I don't think the other PC makers could do any real changes. If they actually had decent customer support, they would have to charge significantly more than what they are asking for right now. Same if they used business grade components in their home lines. The only thing PC makers could do is try to up prices, or to do marketing blitzes.

I like how Gartner and IDC can't agree on what last year's numbers were. The only one they agree on is Apple. Don't the other companies release actual figures for past quarters so the analysts can stop guessing?

And is 10% market share in 26 years of Macintosh really something to get excited about?

Mercedes and BMW would be extremely excited about a 10% market share in the US, and they've been in the business for more than 26 years.

Troll much?

Apple's desktop and laptop business has been growing by leaps and bounds since Q1 2004.

Market Share Increase

It would be interesting to see what the numbers would look like if the Mac still used an architecture that wasn't able to run Windows natively. And is 10% market share in 26 years of Macintosh really something to get excited about?

In 2007, Apple's US market share was 5 percent. Now it's about 10% So Apple's market share has doubled in three years, on a product that carries 30% profit margins.

If you're an Apple investor, I'd say that's a pretty big deal, and a big reason why they've passed MS in market cap and have $40 billion cash on hand.

What?!

While I agree there are definitely some who just have it for programming for iOS that's a ridiculous claim to say no one buys them to use it as a desktop.

I mean, I've always pretty much been on one sole computer and 6 of my 8 computers have been Macs. It's how I use them.

Why woudln't some one use it for the sole purpose of a desktop? For most people's basic needs on a computer a Mac is perfectly fine. Yes, there are some things Windows is better (gaming is the big thing that comes to mind as well as programs like Catia where they don't make it for Mac and it's a program people need to use specifically and not just an equivelant). And that is more a problem of software availability rather than ability of computer.

But many people don't need *that* kind of stuff. They need something that has a word processor, connects on the internet, maybe has a database, some budgeting software, a calendar and contacts. A Mac can easily do all that.

Today marks 500 days since the Mac Pro was updated.

It's not like the Mac Pro is Apple's "hobby" like the AppleTV. This is their flagship desktop computer line.

I've had the money to buy a Mac Pro for over a year. Been waiting for an update. If Steve ever wants to see my money, he better pull it together. Fast.

Explain to me why the current Mac Pro isn't good enough.

If most people stopped being Windows lemmings and bought what they actually *needed* I predict Mac sales would jump 5000% in a year.
