Wow I can't believe I never noticed this thread...must be the biggest ever on MR? Anyway, here's a what up to all the queer geeks ;)
Aquajet,
Welcome to the 'other' list. It was this thread and a few specific posters that finally got me to join in. And I don't regret a moment of it. They are a great group here, with narry a troll in sight. A lot of extremely wise advice has been dispensed and I for one am well pleased that it's run on for such a long time.

Not too bad. You remind me of this totally hot Marine guy in my Politcal Science class.

Yeh Em, the buzz cut really makes you look some military hard arse :) Quite a good look if you ask me :) I'm going for the opposite approach, I normally cut my hair every three weeks, but now i've decided to leave it for at least three months. Of course it's now going through the OMG-that-looks-**** stage :D

Anyway i've been thinking (I have an hour commute in the morning for the next three months, which leaves plenty of time for thought and inner reflection. This is always dangerous). The muslim holy month of Ramadaan has just started. Now for those of you who don't know it's a month where muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

As I was raised muslim, it's something i've done since i was twelve. However, i've not called myself a muslim for almost 3 years now. Atheist through and through. i don't follow any other of the religions observances or requirements at all (other than not eating pork). Yet strangly when ramadaan comes round i find myself fasting. Am i being mad? I think i do it more for cultural reasons, than anything else, but i'm not really sure. I just feel compeled to do it.

Oh well there's a conundrum for all you budding psyco-analysts out there. :D

On another note, i've finnally moved into my new flat. And have just remembered what it is that i hate the most about moving. Unpacking! I have stuff everywhere. And it's gonna take a few days to unpack everything. It's amazing how much stuff you can accumulate over just a few years. Books (Two whole suitcases full) DVD's (one suitcase full) CD's (only a backpack full :D) pots pans crockery cutlery. the list is endless. :)
It's also the first time i've lived alone. Ever. Kind of scary actually. Guess i'll just have to get on with it :) I think once i've unpacked everything i'll begin settling in.

Sorry for the ramble guys

I find myself doing the same thing around the jewish high holy days and Passover. I don't really celebrate my religion even though, like you, I was raised pretty solidly in it. I do feel compelled to fast on yom kippur, and I will usually eat matzah for 1-2 days of passover. Sometimes they feel like empty gestures, but I usually see them as a connection to my family and my background, but one I am facing on MY terms.
Just so you know you aren't the only confused religion-ite out there.

Ugh... my haircut went all wrong!

I told the barber that I just wanted it trimmed short and showed him the pictures on my license and school ID (the quality is horrible, I don't know why I'm bothering to post these):

then he asked me if he could cut it 'low'. I wasn't sure what that meant, but I said 'sure' anyways. He sensed the hesitation in my voice, and asked me if I was sure, and I told him to do whatever he thought best.

Then he was like "here, I'll show you what I mean" and dragged the trimmer accross my head... I screamed on the inside :p. I was forced into a buzz cut!

You could imagine my initial dissappointment:

but I have decided that I don't dislike it, I just think it could be better.

In 2 or 3 weeks it'll be just right. Until then, I'll just wear my hat all the time :p:

Moral of the story: don't let someone do something to you unless you are perfectly clear what their intentions are :).

Emerson, trust me, with a smile like that nobody is going to care what your hair looks like! I've always liked either short hair on guys or else longish hair. The ones in the middle leave me indifferent.

The only bad thing about short hair is that one's head get's cold in the winter.

I think it's important to stay in touch with one's roots through traditions. I'm not Christian but was raised as one and the Christian Holidays are still special times. Occasionally I'll even go to Xmas eve services! It always brings back good memories.

I haven't cut my hair in a while. I think I need, but I kinda like it like this. I usually keep it around an inch or so, but it's pretty good looking right now. I would show you a picture of my beautiful face to point out the hair, but alas, I lack a camera.

Thanks , I actually consider my smile to be one of my best features :).

On a sad note, I still haven't found a club for Wed. nights. I want to go dancing :( :p.

Oh, Mr. Emerson, Ugg is completely right. Wonderful smile :) And there's nothing wrong with close-cropped hair. Of course, I'm a little biased (look at the photo in my profile).

I have to say, I just about choked when I saw your birthdate. You look young, but not THAT young. I figured you to be around my age. Bully for you.

I curse my age everyday. Can't get into the good clubs, they are all 21+.

There needs to be some kind of responsibility measurer. People above a certain level shouldn't be allowed into clubs .

Enjoy it while you can! Your new look is awesome. Compared to my Sunday trip to the local Safeway this weekend. I passed a table that had crafts for children, the guy there edged me on to bring my children by for some arts and crafts; I waved him off. He then added that I could bring by my grandchildren. I was feeling very old after that! :D

Suddenly after that I should just give up and go off to SSC and watch life pass me by.

You need to come down to Louisiana. Seriously. The bars don't care here. You can get into anything and drink all you want. And if you go to the right ones, you probably won't have to pay for a drink all night.

Update on travel

Well as much as I wanted to Chicago during the Oct 15th weekend; my company has made it hard. The Cass Hotel is booked (which is in my budget and location). Las Vegas and SF are still much in the running.

For SF, the Grant Hotel has space (I stayed there back in July, which I thought was great on location and comfort);. In Vegas, I have only found places well off the Strip for the time of my visit.

I have found the Candlewood Suites near the Strip, that makes them a viable alternative for the timing of my visit.

Too bad there are so few flights, and so few people at this time. :(

I had planned on being in NO this past Labor Day for Southern Decadence. Maybe next year.

Wow, I can get a $10,000 scholarship for being gay - gotta love it every day more and more.
Ok can you say spontaneous? But seriously, to register for it you have to be gay or bi or les or trans (LGBT) and you have to write 3 one page essays. It starts Jan. 1 and the deadline is Mar. 1 - http://www.thepointfoundation.org/apply.html The Point Foundation scholarship. Sorry we had college day at my school - hot guy from another school came - and so I've been registering for scholarships.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully us "older" students won't be locked out.

Forget New Orleans. It's gone now. Just come visit me in Lafayette.

That is so hard to believe, isn't it?

Whenever I'm driving out of or into NYC, I still can't quite believe the World Trade Center is no longer there. Just gone from the skyline.

Yeah. It is. And I won't really for real believe it until I get back in there and drive through it.

Is that an offer? :D

To be honest, I had planned after my break up of being in NO for Southern Decadence this past Labor Day. But things got in the way so far in the future of Katrina.

Now the NO's that I remember from so many years ago may now be a memory. But people like yourself and and your family are much more in the forefront of my concerns, than my coming down to have "fun".

I also had plans to try to do Mardi Gras in 2006. Even though there is an effort to make it happen, it seems so wrong to me. In particular with the layoffs of 3K city workers.

I understand the paradox of my staying away and getting them back to work. But I hope the remaining citizens of NO understands the paradox of of the "rest of us" coming into a city that has so many questions that remain unanswered.

So what comes first, the chicken or the egg?

Mardi Gras out here is much better anyway. It's all locals that know how to really celebrate. New Orleans Mardi Gras is...was mostly people from out of town looking to just booze and look at tits. Oh well. Things happen. It's going to take at least 5 years, more realisticly 10 for everything to get back to "normal", not this 8 months they're saying.
