If they are in fact dropping the butterfly mechanism, that tells me Apple has little confidence in the keyboard

They must have gotten tired by now and shipments must have been affected enough for them to pursue a different line of thought in keyboard design.

Tried and tested scissors with possible innovation should be nice to watch out for. Let's see what the future brings. :)

After a bit over a month of use, I've had some keys randomly duplicate occasionally on my 2018 MBP with a 2019 keyboard. I have not had a busted key yet however, which is a lot better than what was happening with 2018s. With the 2018s, after a month of use a key would basically be duplicating so badly that it was unusable.

After adding the 2019 to the service program on launch it should be clear that the butterfly KB has caused issues for Apple. Even if they resolved all issues with the 2019 variation consumers are likely to see any future iterations in line with previous ones. So they would need to keep adding new computers on launch or they'll need to rebrand the KB and adjust it to reset the conversation...

Maybe that will be an improvement. Only time can tell.

I cant believe how many 'generation' keyboards we have for one style of keyboard iteration of Mac laptop designs.

patently absurd

Most laptop keyboards change regularly. If you read the Lenovo forums you'll see quite a lot of complaints about how Lenovo worsens the KB with every new generation.

Hell, even Das introduces new generations of "plain old" Desktop keyboards regularly.

I've said it before, all Apple has to do is adapt the existing slim Magic Keyboard for use in the next MacBook Pro. They could've done so from the start in 2016 but instead we got this Butterfly keyboard debacle...

You know it's bad when an intermittent fault is considered 'good'... o_O

I would not have sold my 2016 if the keyboard had not failed on me. I realised I am having to baby it so much more and it is a constant nag on the mind versus my (then) 2011 MBP and now 2017 MBA. Hoping for some scissor goodness in 2020.

I’ve been searching around and have yet to read a failure with the 2019 butterfly. I think the earlier versions 1 and 2 soured consumers so much, and the butterfly has a bad reputation to such a level that it doesn’t matter if the failure rate is zero, they will lose potential business until it’s gone. They really no longer have a choice, I look at it as a business decision.

Sounds bad, I'm starting to see some (seemingly reliable) reports of the 2019 version on Twitter as well..

I was thinking to buy one today(the top spec, but 1Tera) but after I gave it a try on the keyboard, it felt really cheap(in the bad way) - like a cheap Chinese keyboard. I am a programmer, so I'm not sure if I should go for it.
What do you think about it? should I stay away?

I vote yes (avoiding it like the plague). I've been holding out for the 16" MBP for this reason.

I am in the same boat as you. Been wanting to get a MBP for a couple years now but the keyboards have thrown me off. I will stick to my windows machines until I see what they are doing at the end of this year (hopefully) or in 2020.

I've used windows/linux machines all my life so it is no skin off my back for now but it is discouraging that even though I want to make the jump in macOS I have little faith in the hardware reliability.

Has anyone had any issues with their 2019 MBP butterfly keyboards? I've tried the butterfly keyboard at the store and I love the feel. However, I'm concerned about reliability. Hopefully you guys have used them much more now can provide good feedback.

So I'm new to the butterfly keyboard, got a 2019 15" a few weeks back. I hate it, it's one of the worst keyboards I ever had to type on, and I will never get used to it. Terrible terrible piece of engineering, and it's even worse if you kept your old MacBook (mine is from 2014) and have a direct comparison.
And the friggin touchbar above it makes it even worse.

I can only live with that thing because I use it connected to a monitor with an external keyboard 80% of the time. I really hope they bring back the old keyboards.

I had couple keys stuck sometimes but it can be fixed by punching the key repeatedly (I have also used compressed air just in case when stuck key happened) and it works after that normally. Also it seems to be somewhat heat related as especially I-key seems to stuck after machine had been running very hot (that location gets pretty warm when high CPU load). I guess that is more or less just a feature and seems to be lessen more I use it, so maybe it need some break-in.

I had a 2019 keyboard fail in my last 2018 MBP after about a month, which is way better than the 2018s that I had, which were failing after a few days to a couple of weeks. I am on a 2019 MBP now and paint has already chipped off my I key 2 months in. Other than that though, no major issues (yet) thankfully.

I have a 2019 Air and my F key got stuck a couple of times the other day but seems fine now. To be honest though, I was typing in the dark and afterwords I turned on the light and there was a crumb sitting on top of the F key so I have to wonder if the position of said crumb somehow caused the issue. It's been fine since and I actually love typing on this keyboard. The only thing is that I tend to miss more keystrokes for some reason but I can live with that.

I'm looking to buy a base-model 2019 macbook pro refurbished, since the specs are the same except for the keyboard. So does the gen 4 keyboard still fail? Or should I spend more money on the renewed one with the magic keyboard?

I have gen 4 keyboard since October and I must say it is great. Didnt have any issues at all.
