So does the gen 4 keyboard still fail?
Some fail, some don't. Like all products, a statistical percentage will fail. If it does, Apple will replace the keyboard if it fails within four years, which is good enough for me. Mine is fine, by the way.

I've had a 2018 MacBook Air and 2 2019 MacBook Pro's with the butterfly keyboard. No issues whatsoever with any of them. I do know that some fail or Apple would not have put the support policies in place that they did, but for me, I've had no issues and the 4 year warranty is fair. I'll probably be ready for an upgrade before then anyway.

So I'm new to the butterfly keyboard, got a 2019 15" a few weeks back. I hate it, it's one of the worst keyboards I ever had to type on, and I will never get used to it. Terrible terrible piece of engineering, and it's even worse if you kept your old MacBook (mine is from 2014) and have a direct comparison.
And the friggin touchbar above it makes it even worse.

this Post ... I disagree with everything you said. Having the older keyboard side by side and going from butterfly to the old keys from 2015 and before is like going back to sRGB display gamut as opposed to dci p3. It works and it’s great but it’s no where near as good.
the only reason they went back to the magic keys is because they haven’t perfected the butterfly keys. It’s not an upgrade it’s a compromise for the indefinite time being

the butterfly keys are so nice they made me buy my MacBook pro 15 inch the day I went in to see it. I loved the keyboard so much that I had to have it.

My post was from September and I think the same today. It’s a terrible keyboard and I’ll never understand how anyone can like this. personal opinions I guess.
how do you like the updated magic keyboard in comparison?

Any updates from anyone?

My 2018 keyboard was just replaced with 2019. Glad to see this one seems to be a bit better.

I traded in my 2017 Macbook Pro for an even money exchange for an M1 Macbook Air.. so happy I did. I have a better machine now and unloaded a POS.
