I think in the end, GM will backtrack and allow the use of Apple CarPlay on its future models, even if some of the features of Android Automotive will not be active. This isn't much of the world, where Android phones are way more popular than the iPhone.

I’m going to guess the reason might be that they have to keep up with Apple’s crazy yearly upgrades. It’s why software for iOS is so expensive, tends to go subscription, and is sometimes abandoned/orphaned. If my 2017 subaru no longer works with my iphone, I suspect we will replace the radio/display. Ours is tied to the backup cam but I’m hoping a new one can do so also. That, or pay subaru to upgrade, which is definitely worth it. Carplay is my poor man’s GPS maps, music streamer, phonebook/phone, and more. And I’m poor.

How long before the government intervenes and demands that carmakers facilitate CarPlay, Google, or any other mobile interface?
If that happened, it would be a loss for Apple. Right now, Apple's argument against interoperability is "buy an Android". GM's argument would be to "buy a Honda (or whatever)". If the government requires any vehicle to support any operating system, then I think the same would hold true for phones. I'd love to see that happen, but I don't see it happening in the U.S., at least.

This is per greed where they want more of the data turn off Android Auto and Car play.

It is pretty clearly people are confusing Android Auto vs Android Automotive which are are really 2 completely different things. Android Automotive is the OS and is based on Android but it is different.and just something like microsoft Sync that ford been using. It supports Android Auto and Apple Car play. GM is choosing to turn off support for both of them.

For me I was looking at getting GM new EV coming out in a year or 2 but it just took it off the list. I love my Mustang Mach E and my wife and I are considering going fully BEV in 2024-2025 range with a 3 row EV. GM just got removed from the list.

For me carplay is nice but not required. I found it lost excitement after a few hours when I rented a car with carplay. I use bluetooth audio all the time and my phone for maps etc. That's it. Siri can read messages etc so as a car guy, other things are more important but the thought process of eliminating sees strange

The article states CarPlay will still be in the internal combustion vehicles (gasoline/diesel). Good I never wanted an electric vehicle anyway.

Since the new system is going to be made along with Google, it probably won't drive many Android users away. Though I'd love to find out how many Android users have the luxury of basing their choice on a car purchase over the infotainment system. From my personal experience, less financially stable people or PC enthusiasts tend to have Android in the US. That doesn't scream new GM car buyers to me. iPhone users are probably a big chunk of their customer base.

Also, the fact that this change is based on pushing subscription services needs to be the headline. Social-media this move to death. Everyone should push that other car makers don't follow their lead.
Cadillac has a survey that says 97 percent of their customers are iPhone owners. Wonder how that is going to work in the most profitable business in the company.

You people have no idea that Carplay & Wireless CarPlay sucks.

The actual best option is to connect with bluetooth and use a powered MagSafe mount on the dash. It's really perfect, because you can then use the touch-screen on the iPhone directly without being forced to go through any crappy car manufacturers touch screen that you would with CarPlay.

Let's get rid of CarPlay and let's put the phone on a charging MagSafe dash mount.
And how do you handle the fact that looking at your phone while you are driving is illegal in very many states?

That is only because the ICE vehicles have not hit a refresh point yet.
They dont have any any ICE vehicles slated to be a huge refresh or redo in 2024 but give it a few more years and on their next update they are going to follow suit.
Only reason you are seeing the EV get hit first is they are brand new from the ground up so they have the latest plans.

Maybe you are on to something. The first vehicles that are EV’s from Honda are being built in a GM factory with the GM EV system. And I bet that every one of them will have CarPlay.

To show you how stupid this is, you can still buy a hummer for over 100 thousand dollars and get CarPlay. It’s not coming out of this vehicle. Same for the Chevy Silverado EV, the nice one is 103 thousand dollars. If that’s too much for you then you can get a Cadillac Lyric for less than 80 thousand dollars. Even one of those things will still have CarPlay.

Our problem is that 1 out of ten people in America work for this company or one of its partners. You can’t just rite off 10 percent of people’s jobs. That’s why we had to bail them out in 2008.
I think you might be thinking of something closer to the ENTIRE automotive industry, including all OEM’s and affiliated companies and probably the entire ENERGY complex as well.. It’s certainly not 1 in 10 of 330M of “people in America” or even the 165M in the “workforce” who work for GM alone, nowhere close. It’s also not really even close if one looks at the entire Automotive industry, but certainly not the OEM‘s and affiliates.. like dealers, and third party servicers.

After the federal government as a WHOLE, and then I think overall the department of defense (which probably includes the military), the highest employer in the USA is Walmart, then Amazon, then maybe Home Depot or UPS? I’d have to look something up to get #5 or 6.

Lol. Like that stops anyone.

CarPlay is much worse from a safety standpoint. The UI is clunky and terrible. I find myself touching a CarPlay screen much more for basic things, like finding music, than I do my phone screen. CarPlay is way more of a distraction. iPad Mini and a good car mount is the best option in my mind. Better UI. Big screen. Less distraction and frustration than CarPlay.

How did you survive before it?
That’s like saying how did people survive before electricity or before they figured out how to move on from caves and build houses.

Just because there are other ways to do things, doesn’t mean they were good. Would you be willing to go back to 8 track tapes and paper maps? I for one would not be.

Why would I need to look at the phone instead of CarPlay?
Bluetooth doesn’t give you a way to pick out what you listen to like CarPlay does. It just carries the audio to the audio system. You have to look at your phone to see the music app to select something.

not the reason at all. apple basically tells the car companies what the hardware needs to be to mirror the image being generated by the iPhone, you essentially are broadcasting an image. that's why as CarPlay gets updated it still works on cars year after year, not because the car companies have to do any work (they don't), but because its just mirroring the image of CarPlay being generated by the phone (which of course is updated from time to time by apple.)

the reason is simple... CarPlay takes nearly the entire interface of the car away from the car company... and GM wants it back so you have to opt into subscription services to get everything from maps to streaming music and more so they generate continuing revenue from cars they have already sold.

I can press forward or back on my bluetooth adapter just fine?

And then there's the hands-free voice option to select music as well.
