imho not a great move. I’ve got a 22 Yukon xl Denali and it’s pretty fantastic , although long term reliability will be questionable . It’s a very capable vehicle that can transport the 4 little bastards all the strollers and all the crap , and it has all the convenience (we Have an odyssey too but we’re running out of space for strollers , but transitioning away from CarPlay takes away a major convenience point . Honestly the GM interface is not bad, but would much prefer CarPlay as smoother and more integrated

This makes sense to them because they want you paying for data subscriptions so your maps work. If you can just use Carplay (or Android Auto) 90% of people wouldn't bother with in-car data subscriptions.
True’ish, but I don’t think those are really the subscritpions they are counting on for revenue anymore.. that was true about 8-10 years ago, and might still bring in a tiny amount of revenue but most OEM moved to free map updates while under warranty (and some beyond) about that long ago. some dealers might be able to trick an owner that either A) a map update wasn’t free or B) that it cost them time and effort to install, but those are corner cases.

They want something more like onstar revenues (a GM product originally), where ppl buy monthly or annual service packages and then usually forget about it and the RR just continues on into the future.

Cadillac I think (a GM product) introduced a subscription fee or one time activation fee to enable heated seats. As with legacy ONSTAR they realized it was probably just cheaper to install the systems (at the time the fully enabled ONSTAR radios and receivers) in ALL cars coming down the line and then try and market services after the fact, rather than try and install after manufacture and take more time and effort.

I would never buy a GM car, but this made that pretty much a given. One of the selling points when I bought my car in 2016 was Apple CarPlay (Or Android Auto). Unfortunately I didn't know at the time that Apple Car Play would cease to work about 3 years later. Someone should have told me that so I could have gone with the Subaru Legacy over the Honda Accord. :(

have you ever driven a car with CarPlay for an extended period of time (few weeks at least)? I was happy with BT connectivity in my various Toyota models over the past 10 or os year, but now that I have a Bolt EUV since last November, my user experience is vastly improved
I haven't driven a car with CarPlay. I can imagine that I would enjoy it, but I don't need to be hooked to it.

BTW, not legitimizing one way or the other about GM's future lack of implementation of CarPlay. I'm just making another point. I really rarely use the entertainment system in the car. I'm very plain Jane that way. It's the radio or some podcast from the iPhone. Half the time, I'm driving without any audio.

I'm so plain Jane I drive a 3-cylinder Ford Fiesta that has manual. Back when I got the car, what I could afford and what provided the best fuel economy (the number on condition for me for a car) given my economic circumstances was the Ford Fiesta SFE. It gets about 36mpg in the city (the way I drive it) and mid to upper 40mpg on the highway -- and, it's all gasoline, not even a hybrid!

The thing that really irks me is that the “subscription for features” paradigm is a one way street. First you normalize it for luxury add-ons, then 5 years down the road it’s normalized for basic features from day one.

Because that’s a potential revenue stream, it WILL happen. The laws of quarter to quarter economic growth requires it at the end of the day.
Agreed! Absolutely hate hate hate the subscription model. And yeah, as it becomes normalized, there's almost no way but to accept that way because the huge momentum is going that way. SMH.

Well, I believe it opens the door for competitors who decide to market against it to steal market share. The smart move would be to price it into the car, but for the length of the warranty or maybe the first 7 years of ownership.

The thing about CarPlay is that you don’t see it if you don’t use it; you can use the built-in software if that’s what you prefer.

CarPlay is, and should always be an option.
You are correct about the CarPlay in-vehicle behavior, and I agree the option should be there as well but I still prefer the car‘s built-in UI.

I honestly find it jarring when CP comes to the foreground, when a text message arrives, for example. More so in the early evening, when the comfortably subdued car OS UI is replaced by the bright-ass CarPlay screen.

I wonder if GM forgets that those options have legions of users, going the other route won't buy them many looks though the sales windows.
They forget that there are more Apple users that actually have money to buy their expensive vehicles than Android users in the US. Considering this is their primary market, it seems like someone will be getting fired I’m the next few years for this boneheaded decision.

Dark mode may help with the screen brightness.

So, GM, being another victim to ******tification (thank you Cory Doctorow for this wonderful word).

[...]

Wait until you've experienced it. Pretty soon you're going to curse Apple for not allowing more apps in CarPlay. YouTube anyone, while connected at the speed charger?

Anyway, either GM is another victim to ******tification (thank you Cory Doctorow for this wonderful word). Or GM is playing a stupid april fools joke which is backfiring now. GM is now even lower on my next car wish list.

I'd consider buying a Tesla just for the Teslacams. I don't care that it's an EV. The problem is, they're far too expensive, even with all the cameras.

They've gotten cheaper with the price cuts earlier in the year and the EV incentives, and they'll get cheaper with the new manufacturing processes they're introducing with the Project Highland revision to the Model 3 coming later this year

iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth.
Gee thanks, but no thanks. I am not going back to the last decade for my music and information needs. Pretty strange to build cars of the future by making people use technology of the past.

No GM cars for this household then. If it doesn’t have Carplay, I’m not buying it. Period.

Also….This is going to mess up a lot of car rental companies which buy a lot of GM cars. They will get a lot of customer complaints.

I would never buy a car without CarPlay it is quite essential for my daily use.
I need it and having CarPlay will be a nonnegotiable when I buy my next car. Any Make not supporting it or planning to phase it out, meaning poor support going forward, is not even on the list.

Appreciate the info, will give it a try. I had actually looked for a setting for this in the phone without success. My phone was already set to use dark mode but had no effect in the car. This makes it sound like there are settings only accessible while connected to the vehicle?
I have mine set to automatic in the car and I select a different wallpaper as well.

General Motors (GM) will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its vehicles starting this year, shifting to a built-in infotainment system co-developed with Google (via Reuters).

CarPlay-Phone-Call.jpg

GM owns Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC in the United States. It will stop offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, which goes on sale this summer. The company plans to continue offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its combustion models, which are expected to be phased out by 2035 in favor of electric vehicles. Owners of existing GM cars that currently have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be able to continue using the systems.

GM has worked on infotainment software with Google since 2019 that tightly integrates with other vehicle systems such as navigation and GM's Super Cruise driver assistant. Future GM infotainment systems will offer applications such as Spotify and Audible, and iPhone users will still be able to listen to music and make phone calls using Bluetooth. EV buyers will also get access to Google Maps and Google Assistant at no extra cost for a period of eight years.

The move is expected to help the automaker gather more data about how consumers drive and accelerate a strategy to incentivize vehicle-related digital subscription services. Notably, GM was not included in Apple's list of automakers that plan to offer the next-generation CarPlay experience.
