Just another vote in the 'sell Apple by selling Apple - not solely by bashing Vista' camp.

Love these ads when they have a clear selling point as to why the Mac experience is better. Cringe when they do nothing but bash Vista. Justin Long says hardly anything in Yoga.

Not nice and increasingly ineffective in my book.

Maybe there is something wrong with your book?:D Cause Apple is selling lots of computers these days.

Nope, nothing wrong with my book. I buy the latest John Irving because I want it, not because 'it's not Gabriel Garcia Marquez'.

Seriously, I'd agree that there's an anti-Vista market.

But after a while, any ad campaign needs a refresh. The anti-Vista boat is in danger of sailing through over-exposure. Show em what they can do with a Mac first and foremost, and fine, say why it's better than Vista. But to just say Vista is crap without a positive counterargument will damage the Apple brand over time. Yoga's a bad one for me, but Breakthrough's fine. The latter clearly elucidates the benefits of Mac, while Yoga just says Vista's a bad un. Only so long you can do that for.

That's all.

Yes some commercials are funnier than others. I though the Breakthrough one was funnier than the Yoga one. As with all the other commercials, they are designed for people on the fence about buying (or switching to) a Mac or PC. I do like how the Breakthrough commercial as it addressed the main problem with Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, 98, all of them). Windows relies on PC manufacturers getting it right. M$ can't possibly create an OS to work with the millions (maybe even billions) of hardware configurations. Its just not realistic to believe that they can offer the same seamless integration as Apple can. The issue of Apple or M$ is neither better or worse than the other. Its what do you need it for. Some IT professionals could never use a Mac all the time because of the nature of their occupation. But these commercials aren't designed for those of us with tech savvy. And yes, some people switch to Mac and find out they can't do certain things. Macs aren't the end all. I have them, and they work for me, but I also have Windows machines and XP and Vista running in a VM on some of my Macs. But the commercials must be working as Apple's market share has increased. Apple must know what they're doing.

i personally thought they were both hilarious, but i really liked the yoga one, and i was laughing real hard. these commercials are what made me think of going with a mac for my next computer (and the fact my toshiba is crapping out on me after a year!) Getting my mac this summer!

Who said they live their lives around ads? I said it was just one reason. Believe it or not, ads have been known to influence peoples perceptions.:D

Do they also drink Coors Light and drive a Subaru because "Zoom Zoom" is just so cool because of all the marketing? Come on now. I have cheap beer ads thrown at me all the time, but I know enough to know that Belgian and German beers are the way to go :p

You can't seriously think that I'm gullible enough to believe that people out there have actually factored in the "get a mac" ads into their purchasing regimen. And wait, not because the ads have poor production value or anything, but because the Mac guy is "smug"? Come on now...

Subconsciously yes, Mac users are often seen as smug, and these do nothing to deter from that negative perception which is a factor against buying a Mac.

personally, the ads don't do much but bring comic relief. all the people who are getting into macs now are because of me. I explain to them the differences and tell them from my personal experience of everything and inform them of what it can do. I also let them use my macbook to see for themselves. The new commercials are funny though. I like the time machine one. lol

Meh, lately the Vista-bashing is coming off like the proverbial pot calling the kettle black. Let's be honest: the transition from Tiger to Leopard hasn't exactly been smooth sailing.

I like this ad campaign, but I'm more a fan of the spots that focus on the strong points of OS X and Macs. For example, I thought that the Time Machine spot was excellent.

I also think that it would behoove Apple to really emphasize the Mac's ability to function in the corporate world just as well as in the creative world. The view that Macs are playthings for creative types or the home hobbyists persists.

I like the Apple "Get a Mac" commercials. I think they're funny, even the newer ones.

This theme is way past old at this point. If their target are consumers who have never seen a "Get A Mac" ad then this may reach them but that group of consumers may be very small and so this theme is a waste.

Time for something new Apple. Even Geico knows when to retire a great marketing run an start a new. I'm sure Apple will hit another home run with a different theme.

Apple doesn't have much to brag about

Seeing these ads makes me furious. I upgraded my macbook pro from Tiger to Leopard three months ago. Since then I experience many problems: X11 doesn't work properly (especially with spaces), my display often doesn't turn on coming back from sleep mode (doesn't Apple make both the hardware and the software?!), I have font problems with Latex, and I find myself rebooting the computer, to get things back in track, often enough to remind me of my previous experience using a Windows XP laptop.

Not to speak of Safari, whose instability is a complete disgrace. By the way, since the last update, gmail doesn't work properly anymore in Safari. It's impossible to type capital letters while composing messages. You'd expect Apple to test their update on a major site like gmail. No one would have forgiven Microsoft if Windows Explorer had similar issues. So I wish Apple will focus on the quality of their products, rather than brag that they are better than Microsoft. Otherwise they will soon be worse.

Um, I don't see your issue on my end. I have a Gmail account and the latest version of Safari on my Leopard install. I had no issues at all typing a letter on my Gmail account and no issues with caps while typing. I sent the email out just fine in Safari and was able to navigate and was able to perform several functions in Gmail with Safari.
Also BTW Safari has been rock stable for me. I have not experienced a crash on the latest update at all.
You might want to check your system or do an Archive and Install for a fix.

Is there a solution for that? I'm all up-to-date and that still happens to me about 1/6 wake-ups.

Completely agree about Safari-- it is EXTREMELY unstable, far more than IE7 on Windows, and there are also a lot of compatibility issues.

At home, I use Leopard about 75% of the time and Vista about 25% of the time. I have used Macs on-again, off-again, since System 7.1. Me, everyone I know with Vista, and a large percentage of reviewers find it to be very stable and secure. The lackluster reviews were primarily based on compatibility (which I find ironic- if one switches, they have to buy ALL new software), driver issues (which, by and large, have been addressed), poor performance on low spec hardware, time to release (should not be a factor in a review, but was), and innovations and new features that improve on XP (in formal reviews Vista should have been evaluated on its own as an OS, not in comparison to what was different/new/old).

When I purchased my current Mac my primary reasons were:

1) Worry-free as far as defragmentation, registry/installations/removal, virus/malware, security, and stability
2) Few interruptions (i.e. system tray notifications, lots of background operations/default start-up programs, etc.)
3) Innovative hardware
4) Integration and compatibility with Apple products, especially iTunes (the Windows version was horrible- the Mac version usually works flawlessly)
5) Unique software features

The thing is Vista has addressed some of these issues (especially with security and stability), and more Mac weaknesses (i.e. security holes and stability) are being exposed. I don't really care if Apple continues the ads or not, and I realize it is a business decision, but personally I think they are getting old (campaign has been going for well over a year), and I thought the Yoga one was REALLY bad because they basically just say Vista is awful with no backup or truth to it whatsoever.

These two newest ones I enjoyed, unlike the last few.

"It's not my fault....it's mac's fault!"

You whined about this on Appleinsider.

I hate these 'Get a Mac' ads, they were a big part of the reason I held off from getting a Mac for a long time. I just found the ads to be obnoxious and extremely irratating. The sad thing is a lot of Mac users act like the 'Mac' in the commerical, condescending and smug.

That's because we are better than you. And by that I don't mean better in a small way, but in a really big way.

I can't see the logic here. Ferraris are for the most part owned by obnoxious rich people, but anyone who based their judgement about the quality of their cars on that needs their head examined.

For some people the Apple brand is a symbol of style. They are the same sort of people who flaunt designer clothing. It's no surprise you see more of these people, since they are trying really hard to be seen. Most people who own Apple products aren't, so of course you will see selection bias.

I use Apple computers because the OS was designed by people who actually think things through. The Mac OS is the gold standard for UI design for good reason (even though it isn't perfect). I'm guessing that there are a lot of people like me, who used Windows because they had to and had no real idea of the difference. I was given a Performa at work to replace a Win 95 machine, and once I got used to it I realized how poorly Windows was designed. That's a long time ago now, not long after some people were still criticizing Macs for having a graphical user interface and touting DOS.

I happen to think that computer users would be better off if there wasn't a virtual monopoly over desktop operating systems. In fact, Apple would find it much harder to compete if that were the case, since other manufacturers wouldn't be tied to Microsoft's monopolyware and users would benefit from the competition. That's why I can't stand Microsoft. It has nothing to do with Apple.

No Irish person would drink Coors. So, what you're saying is that you've never been influenced by advertising? Not even once?

By the way, why do you feel the need to state which Apple products you own in your sig? Is this what helps define you as a person, as a fan? What do you intend to communicate to others by this?

<hugs brand new 15" MBP, kicks old HP>

<In best Scarlett O'Hara voice>: After all, it is only a commercial!!! Land sakes!

Bottom line... I don't know ANYONE who enjoys Windows. No one.
I know lots that LOVE their macs.

That's because you no doubt only become friends with people who are obsessed with Apple and hate MS.

You don't know ANYONE who enjoys windows What a sheltered life you must lead.

I love XP, I dislike OS X. Usability the former wins every time for me.

I think Apple should be a little more careful bashing Vista with the 'nothing works' attitude in the yoga ad seeing as Leopard for many users is still a big bugridden beetlefest...

I thought that too when I watched the ad, but I'm not their target audience I guess. Well, I guess the ad said "after a year" so Apple has a few months left.

Correlation doesn't imply causation. I would be very surprised if these commercials have as big of an effect as you suggest they do.

True for the first sentence. As for the second, I don't know about you, but I know a lot of people who used to know nothing about the Mac but know now because of these commercials. Some of them didn't even know their iPod is from the same company that makes Macs! These commercials have made them curious and made them wander into an Apple Store. Some of the commercials before (the guy being blasted out of his house because of his G5, the tanks surrounding a G4) I thought were even more abstract as they only spoke to Mac users and Windows users would ignore them as Macs are "incompatible/only for certain users/can't do..." etc.

You whined about this on Appleinsider.

No, I didn't. Seems like you think that there is only one person using X11.
My main point is that Apple too released an operating system in a state that is far from perfect, and half a year later some serious problems haven't been fixed yet.

Thanks for the link. The reason I switched to Mac was the expectation to have a polished, bug-free system without the need to constantly fix and tweak things myself. Otherwise I would have switched to Linux.

By the way, I already installed an updated X11 three months ago, and it fixed many of the problems - although X11 remained unstable. After a recent update from Apple, the incompatibility with spaces came back, together with other serious issues. Given that the X11 version released with Leopard is practically unusable, and that no fix was provided by Apple in the past 6 months, I would say that Apple is ignoring the subset of users who use X11.

I rely on X11 on a daily basis, so I don't think that complaining about it is whining.
