My wife's Vista laptop works flawlessly as well. I tried Vista in the RC stage... didn't work well on my machine so I stuck with XP, which is very stable. I don't know if you're living in a fantasy world or just in denial, but Windows is a decent (but not great) operating system.

It's obviously no OS X, otherwise we would not be here. Now if there was only an xMac, I would never have to use Windows again.

Apple? Are you listening?

-Clive

Well, I've had the opposite experience with my wife's Vista laptop. When we bought it, the 1.6GHz dual-core Pentium (aka neutered Core Duo) was fast enough, and 1GB RAM was good enough.

I then went through hell trying to get an anti-virus that would work. Symantec products wouldn't install correctly, as each of the Vista versions apparently has a slightly different security model or something that broke the installation process. Eventually I trashed them and went with kaspersky which seems to work.

Over time, her computer got slower and slower. No, her hard disk isn't full. No, she isn't installing lots of programs that load resident services. Yes, I've checked it for spyware and the like.

Over time I upgraded her CPU to a 1.83GHz Core Duo and 2GB of RAM. It's still a dog, takes quite a while to boot, and after logging in you really have to back off and let it settle for a while before you can start using it, as the disk is grinding away on various services and apps that get launched.

This is all for a machine that she uses for IE and Thunderbird, and Open Office only to read attached Word docs, and HP photo software for viewing digital pix off our camera. THAT's IT. It's barely useable. Core Duo and 2GB of RAM and she is waiting for disk all the time? Forget it. I'm constantly helping her with broken HP software (that's HP's fault, not Vista's), and I'm playing IT to her constantly.

On the other hand, I don't have to help my 12 year old with her Macbook, nor my 10 year old who uses a Macbook wiht a cracked screen that we have as a desktop. The 10 year old also uses a Vista desktop, and it's no better than the wife's Vista laptop. 2.8GHz P4, fast SATA drive, 2GB of RAM, and a decent graphics card and it's a dog.

I'm an old time Windows user, and use XP every day at work. Vista is a dog if you have modest needs and today's entry level equipment (which would fly using XP).

I loathe these ads. People I've tried to convert to Macs have cited these ads as just one of the reasons that they won't change.

"Gay Sweater"? Was his sweater having sex with another sweater of the same sex?

Or is the sweater just really happy?

Anyways, I'm getting tired of Windows/PC bashing. It's very negative. People who are on the fence might see Mac as a jerk & go w/ PCs. They need to focus on Mac's positives. However, Judy Greer is CUTE!

I also agree w/ those who say Apple should make their Macs more competitive. Either same features at a way lower cost or same cost but way better features.

I doubt thats a universal experience, I have a vista desktop, my rm has a vaio, 2G ram, GMA 950/GForce 7800. Vista are fine.

Im not sure how much an individual's experience should weigh when we discuss an OS.

After all, there are individuals with very bad leopard experience as well.

I believe that all sweaters should be treated equally, and if it makes one sweater happy to be with another sweater of the same sex, then so be it.

well I think its the revenge time. U know... All those 20 years that pc was making fun of us that mac sucks... Now apple is doing the same thing so I don't hvae to say pc sucks :)

Looks like your circle is quite small.... as far as computers goes....

Nope.... VERY large.
But yeah, I do know a few Windows users for whom their enthusiasm exceeds 'tolorate'.
Mostly virus writers and security types (such as myself) who make quite a nice living off of Windows' pathetic security model.

What??? I just went to a Mac because it made sense for me and my family. It had nothing to do with the ads. Nor did they have anything to do with us waiting. That's nuts...

Correct. They also hate windows, just not as much as Apple. They formed an irrational hatred of Apple.

As my friend John put it, these ads convey the message - "Macs as used by smug pr**ks"

Sorry, I can't help it....

not... try Core 2 Duo, and 2 Gigs RAM

Dude, I can't get Symantec products to install correctly on ANY machine, Mac, PC, WinXP, Win2000, Win98, OS X, System 7....

People have had better luck if you rebuild the machine from scratch, just like people had to do with a fresh Leopard installl...

Not a Core 2? Not rebuilt from scratch? I bet you have one of those graphics chip that the Mini uses... :p

You just don't have the equipment neccessary for Vista....

Oh well, Apple needs to spend more time updating their own equipment, instead of spending time bashing others...

I thought the Yoga one was kinda funny, not so much breakthrough.

I've been a fan of these ads all along, but the concept is getting a bit stale.

And I see in my minds eye a backlash ad from MS with similar characters, except PC is cooler and the Mac guy is small and a little seedy looking. PC asks Mac why his sweater has so many holes hacked into it and Mac replies "Well, I was at the pwn2own contest last week......"

Wow. You know people who live their lives around advertisements? Sad...

Who said they live their lives around ads? I said it was just one reason. Believe it or not, ads have been known to influence peoples perceptions.:D

Thanks for backing me up.... :)

Public outcry came from the people trying to load Vista on their Pentium 1.8GHz machines with 512 Megs RAM and Intel Integrated Graphics 950 (you know, the one APPLE STILL USES IN THEIR LINEUP).

(runs for cover...)

Yeah for Apple a 1.8 is current hardware.

There is a good reason why Apple tends to aim these ad's squarely at Microsoft - and that's because the people these commercials are aimed at are PC users. PC users in the market for a new computer will by default go for a new Windows machine - these ad's do a great job at raising awareness of choice in the market, and the very real pitfalls of Vista against a superior 'home user' experience with Mac.

The commercials are not aimed at me or you - who are long time / recent Apple Mac users. So it's only lame because it's not a commercial aimed at you. And why would Apple aim advertising spend at you? We are the converted - and Apple is a brand that generates huge loyalty.

Amen to that!!!

who is the actress in breakthrough?

who is the actress in breakthrough? I always wondered who she was. She used to be in sitcoms in the late 80's trough the mid 90's.

Who said they live their lives around ads? I said it was just one reason. Believe it or not, ads have been known to influence peoples perceptions.:D

Well then tell them to use Ubuntu... no advertisements whatsoever! :D YAY! NO MEAN ADS FULL OF BAD PEOPLE MAKING FUN OMG LOL WTF BRB NBC CBS!!!!!111!!~

Hah.

I hate these 'Get a Mac' ads, they were a big part of the reason I held off from getting a Mac for a long time. I just found the ads to be obnoxious and extremely irratating. The sad thing is a lot of Mac users act like the 'Mac' in the commerical, condescending and smug.

How much do you guys estimate Apple pay these folks for every ad they shoot...$30,000?

For those of you, perhaps the quoted, that aren't in weird world of advertising... If the most they paid for this spot was 90k (on talent for 3, assuming that it would normally be 60k for the two), then this is waaaaaaayy low. Production costs for these spots are also really low. Minimal set. Hair, wardrobe, make up, minimal. Most of the money being spent is going to the media buy.

I've made many single :30 commercials that cost (for just one commercial) around 400k - 700k (production only, not including media buy). All comparable sized brands. This campaign is a very smart use of money. Especially as the marketshare continues to rise.

I'm guessing that by this point though (time passing, them being more recognizable), the talent can demand a higher rate (seinfeld style).
