My wife's Vista laptop works flawlessly as well. I tried Vista in the RC stage... didn't work well on my machine so I stuck with XP, which is very stable. I don't know if you're living in a fantasy world or just in denial, but Windows is a decent (but not great) operating system.
It's obviously no OS X, otherwise we would not be here. Now if there was only an xMac, I would never have to use Windows again.
Apple? Are you listening?

Well, I've had the opposite experience with my wife's Vista laptop. When we bought it, the 1.6GHz dual-core Pentium (aka neutered Core Duo) was fast enough, and 1GB RAM was good enough.
I then went through hell trying to get an anti-virus that would work. Symantec products wouldn't install correctly, as each of the Vista versions apparently has a slightly different security model or something that broke the installation process. Eventually I trashed them and went with kaspersky which seems to work.
Over time, her computer got slower and slower. No, her hard disk isn't full. No, she isn't installing lots of programs that load resident services. Yes, I've checked it for spyware and the like.
Over time I upgraded her CPU to a 1.83GHz Core Duo and 2GB of RAM. It's still a dog, takes quite a while to boot, and after logging in you really have to back off and let it settle for a while before you can start using it, as the disk is grinding away on various services and apps that get launched.
This is all for a machine that she uses for IE and Thunderbird, and Open Office only to read attached Word docs, and HP photo software for viewing digital pix off our camera. THAT's IT. It's barely useable. Core Duo and 2GB of RAM and she is waiting for disk all the time? Forget it. I'm constantly helping her with broken HP software (that's HP's fault, not Vista's), and I'm playing IT to her constantly.
On the other hand, I don't have to help my 12 year old with her Macbook, nor my 10 year old who uses a Macbook wiht a cracked screen that we have as a desktop. The 10 year old also uses a Vista desktop, and it's no better than the wife's Vista laptop. 2.8GHz P4, fast SATA drive, 2GB of RAM, and a decent graphics card and it's a dog.
I'm an old time Windows user, and use XP every day at work. Vista is a dog if you have modest needs and today's entry level equipment (which would fly using XP).
