Ouch - talk about lowballing. Ill stick to private resale.

Edit - If this is how much these phones are objectively worth to these companies, its crazy how far apart it is from individual assessment. Our own personal assessment is primarily influenced by the initial cost of the device. That stark difference leads me to think that these iphones are overpriced and overvalued products.

You would have been better off stating "what about the children?" No one is preyed upon. There are tons of sites offering buy back programs. Anyone looking to avail themselves of that type of service is going to shop around. 14 times out of 10 they're going to choose another more well known vendor that pays more. Even the most naive babe in the woods knows how to comparison shop online.

I was talking about in general. These sites, meaning multiple sites that offer to buy back your phone. Will always offer you hundreds of dollars less than if you just simply sell it yourself. But they understand that ppl arent familiar with how much their phone is worth.

So if your phone is work lets say $750. If i am running one of those sites. I will offer you $450. If you dont know any better. You would think the $450 is a great deal. Not knowing that you got shafted by these websites which offer you cash now for your phone deals.

Cars are no different, try trading a car into a dealer. However with these kinds of devices a better comparison might be to a pawn shop.

It is true that cars are overpriced, especially luxury brands - personal experience. However, most people don't upgrade cars on a yearly basis. Some folks do however upgrade yearly for phones.

Should these phones really depreciate as much as cars though?

I guess leasing a car is about the same as being in the upgrade program. As far as value goes I find it insane people can get $800 for a used X. At that point I would just get a new phone.

I do not mind this type of advertising. Everyone posting the same pics of their new iPhones in boxes cost Macrumors $$$.

GameStop is offering the most cash and is the most convenient for me for iPhones. If only I could get $200 for my SBSS Apple Watch Series 2.

It's not even about that. It's MacRumors showing their greed similar to Apple. They want to make as much money as possible off us who are in turn making them rich through ads. It's bad enough they advertise it on the front page but then they double down with a post to make sure it is all in your face. It is a little much. I'm here for the rumors that they basically copy from 9to5 but I have to navigate through the slop to get to the substance.

I get some pretty useful information from this forum and it doesn't cost me a cent so there's no place for me to complain about it. I happen to appreciate things when it is presented to me for free, with good and useful information.

Imagine running a website with hundreds of members, and the time, effort, and financials, to keep it running but not charging a cent to the said members, where would they find the resources to keep this thing running? If you think MacRumors is greedy, I'm sure you're well aware of others that are greedier, to the point where they're asking for your first born just to view their content. I find myself appreciative of their work here and not complain about it when it's offered to me willingly, without any "membership fees". When I get to the point this changes, then I won't be coming here to complain, I won't be coming here AT ALL.

To me, $200 sounds reasonable if it is in great condition.

It's one of the benefits of owning apple devices - the public sees more value in them, hence higher resale prices. I'm not complaining since I always stick to private sales. E.g., I was recently able to sell a my 2011 MBP for 550 CDN.

I understand exactly what you're saying. What I'm criticizing is your characterization of the unsuspecting helpless victim. People use buy back programs for the convenience vs trying to sell the phone themselves. Sure they get more money as a private seller, but they actually have to sell it themselves. It's the same reason people trade in old cars for new ones instead of selling the old car themselves and using that money for a down payment. Convenience. There are entire industries built around that convenience factor.

I agree but the fact that you come here and browse the site generates money for them. Being that they are profiting from that, you would hope they would listen to the customers feedback. Just because it is free doesn't mean the customers can't expect and want more. Not listening to customers will lead to customers not coming to the site which hurts their wallets.

With that said, all this extra device selling stuff should be relegated to a sub-site/dedicated forum. Personally, I think they should stick to what they know and continue to improve upon that versus branching out to try and do everything else. That's how many business fail because they are trying to do too much. IMHO.

I don't get why some of you are so upset about this move by MacRumors. So far, any affiliated "business" presented on this site seemed to me honest and not shady.

For the record: my Apple Watch 2 is quoted 50$. I'm not living in US so I can't participate anyway.

Apple – through the sadly well-known service offered by Brightstar (read the bad reviews...) – quoted 0$ and when I try to print the shipping label I get an error. Already tried 3 times to generete the label to no avail. I'll probably give up and keep the watch.

In MR's defence, I prefer this type of website monetisation to super-invasive ads -- this service, distributed to the tech-savvy audience via MR does actually have the potential to be useful to us, the readers, in a much less annoying way than ad banners, for example...
But if the prices aren't right and this is a rip-off, you failed to seize the opportunity.

You make a good point, but what disappoints me is that ALL of these services offer bottom dollar... but this one that MacRumors associates with is the bottom of the bottom. If you are going to insult us, at least give us a little kiss first!

LOL, I tried looking up my 2014 rMBP and it gave me a quote of $300. It doesn't even give you the option of selecting a CPU or anything, and this is for a rMBP with an i7 and 512 GB SSD. Heh.

Seems to be competitive with similar style services like Gazelle, Apple’s own giveback, and others. This is the low stress way to sell where you don’t have to deal with potential returns, or (potentially) fraud.

Personally I still prefer working locally on CL, or via Swappa.

Not complaining either but buying a used phone which may have issues for 80% of the original cost mystifies me.

You guys are acting surprised by the extremely low offers. WTH! You do know they are offering you little and will sell it to someone else for a lot? I hope you do. Companies like this are just like dealing with car salesmen. They will give you half of what your used car is worth in trade for an overpriced new model. Put your used iThingies on eBay or another similar site and sell them for what they are worth. It is a no brainer...
