It's more of a browser than I've seen in any other "smart" phone... I'll take it.

While i'll be in line for the iphone because i want the ipod capability instead of dragging around multiple devices...the cingular 8125 is a pretty good web browser...been using it since november. opera works great on it. i'm more worried about the edge network. it's my first smart phone but good god is it so frigggggin slllooooww. They better upgrade the speed of it before June 29or there will be huge disapointment.

... simply a MUST for launch. They are talking some pretty BIG TALK regarding Safari and OSX - the phone will get slammed in the reviews if Safari does not truly perform like a real browser.

You're correct, and it's interesting there was no BOLD section on Web Browsing and/or safari.

Maybe Apple read all the fallout on the boards last night about no Flash and no Java and are not raising attention to that oversight.......

And for those of us not in the USA, June 29 will be just another summer day. :(

I was hoping there'd be mention of some updates on international release dates (not just late 2007/early 2008) for the iPhone at WWDC.

Oh well, Im sure that information will be soon enough.

There is no excuse for a mobile device that they are saying can browse the "REAL INTERNET" that has no FLASH in it. Even on the 1 web page they are demoing everyday on TV and on there site has flash on it.

Where do you read into it that activations are done through iTunes? To me, it appears what they are saying is that iTunes is the hub (obviously) and that it is required for iPhone setup and use.

I find it unlikely that ATT or Apple would let you purchase the iPhone w/o signing a contract at the store. Otherwise, these puppies would be all over eBay within a matter of minutes.

...and speaking of ebay....I'm planning on buying a couple of iPhones and putting them on ebay. My questions are....how can I do this being that I have to sign a 2 year contract? Do I cancel the contract shortly thereafter? Then sell them on ebay and make some profit? I'm not sure how to do this and make some cash and also in turn help some folks out who couldn't get an iPhone? Stupid questions? Maybe, but I am curious.....

Simple a MUST!!!
..For you. Congradulations on being the first one to take a thread into "omg iphone suxorz!1!" realm.
No one who wants one cares what you think. And if you don't want one, no one is making you get one. Your post, aside from general whining, is only remoretly related to the topic at hand.

The phone will get slammed by nerds who know wtf java and flash are. My mother, grand mother, brother, heck my entire family outside of me will love this thing and never probably notice until they try and load a complicated flash game... Which no one but my brother is likely to do.

All those that hate the iPhone and are just here to deconstructively trash it, please just walk away and pretend it doesn't exist. You'll be quite surprised to find out that life is actually just as it was before the iPhone was announced, and that the lack of Java support will actually have no ill effects on your social life!
Contrary wise, sitting here and trashing a product you have no intention of buying could have dramatic effects on your social and dating life. If you have one.

But... as Steve keeps saying, the iPhone has a real browser and with it you can surf the real internet... just without flash and java then?

Yeah, most modern sites don't use Java any more- just AJAX stuff. Google Apps / Meebo / etc.

Lack of Flash on the other hand is annoying. I'll bet we see something similar to how when Safari first launched without Flash support, but got it in fairly quick order soon after...

Try Surfing the WEB without Java or Flash...
Go into Safari security preferences and turn off plug-ins and Java, then browse for a while. Many things seem ok, you can get by, but lots of things are missing, it gets annoying after a while. See how long you can stand it before you turn them back on.

I think iPhone might be a very good browser, but you can't say it's the real Internet without these things.

Nice touch, don't 'ya think! :D

I think iPhone might be a very good browser, but you can't say it's the real Internet without these things.

It's not that Flash makes the internet, it's that the internet is made up of everything. Just because one service is not supported does not mean it is not the "real internet." I can make it through anything I do online without needing flash.

And no mention of IMAP or Exchange

So what it only works with those email providers... What about exchange and IMAP?

Yeah, but i'll take speed/substance over flash anyday!

Don't get me wrong, I like the iphone, but Some of these advertisements frustrates me. They claim its a "revolutionary" phone, but i don't think it really is that amazing

Revolutionary:
radically new or innovative; outside or beyond established procedure, principles, etc.: a revolutionary discovery.

Whats so revolutionary about the phone part of the phone? I know it can conference call pretty well, or what about the contact part? a lot of people use contacts, so what that it syncs with address book, so do a lot of other phones.

I think the iPhone will do well, but to me it just seems like its just meeting a few small features that would really make it great. Its being pushed so much that i think a lot of people are going to expect all these small extra features and are going to be let down

So what it only works with those email providers... What about exchange and IMAP?

It works with IMAP just fine.

If you're running on Exchange, you can turn on IMAP support easily. Mail won't support the proprietary Exchange protocol directly- since it can require royalties and is not an open standard.

But since Exchange has solid support for IMAP / IDLE, setting up the same push email with Exchange as with Yahoo is not too tough to do.
