this is what upsets me the most... how many videos can you really store with only a mere 8gb! i said it a hundred times, i love my ipod as is and would love to have an iphone geared towards business users that is everything it is currrently without the music end. if that were not possible, than an iphone with at least 20gb!

however, i will continue to drool until june 29

Can anybody here support Apple's (and Steve's) claim that this device, even setting aside the phone and internet features, is "the best iPod ever"?

I mean, sure it has a slightly bigger screen than the 5th-gen iPod, but only one-tenth as much storage space (8 GB vs 80 GB). It plays the exact same music files and connects (one hopes) through the same type of docking connector to the exact same devices... so what makes it the "best" ever? From my perspective, it's not even "as good" of an iPod as what I've already got.

As far as I can see, the iPhone is a smaller PSP, plus a phone, minus the games... for more than three times as much money.

My daughter doesn't want an iphone, she wants a razr... goofball...
So, I will get the iphone for her, then sell it on ebay and buy her her pink RAZR.
Profit!
Might be able to pay for mine and my wife's iphones...

that is assuming that 30 days later there will be an iphone shortage, doubtful

didn't hurt the ipod

msn isn't among the supported emails listed, but wouldn't you be able to go to msn.com on the iphone and log in that way?

i would assume so. it is fully functional safari. they say it is not watered down, so we would be able to go to any site...

Heheh! I just received the same email from Apple too! Freaking great!

This is what/how I responded to Apple:

Yawn!

YAWN!!!! Zzzzz Zzzzz (-_-)

Just wake me up when some real hardware gets here:

- 10" Ultra Portable Macintosh MacBook Pro Mini or MacBook Mini
- Semi-Pro gaming mini tower... MacPro Mini ($2100) all-in-one?
- Video iPod w/Widescreen and touch screen UI, 120GB, BT, iLife Mobile
- iMac updates sometime soon?
- MacMini updates??? Can we have one maybe?
- Ummm how about .Mac updates?
- iLife 08 and iWork 08

There are plenty of stuff that Apple is missing from their linup and all we can dig up is stuff we already know about? Come on! Where is that inside source? Find someone to make up some rumor about this stuff and I will be hooked on it just to dream about it.

I think everyone is missing the point on Flash and Java. It is not going to "kill" the phone. However:
No Flash
No Java
No 3G
No real 3rd party development tools
No IM
No expandable storage
No feedback on keyboard

All of these are available on phones that cost less.

Your asking for too much novalty crap in a phone that is supposed to change the market... not mimic it and fail. It is bad enough people are a bit confused as to why it costs so much, and by adding all of that stuff it would have jacked the price up another $100 or so. The iPhone and the iPod were better off without it. Besides... half that stuff in that list is software related... it will get fixed/solved soon enough I am sure.

this is what upsets me the most... how many videos can you really store with only a mere 8gb! i said it a hundred times, i love my ipod as is and would love to have an iphone geared towards business users that is everything it is currrently without the music end. if that were not possible, than an iphone with at least 20gb!

NO! The iPhone is not an iPod so having more than 20GB would be insane. It would be more expensive with flash based memory, or it would be too delicate just like the iPod with a HDD stuck inside. This phone is not for business users so what is the real problem? It has no MS Office support or support for anything that the business world would use on a day to day basis that makes the Treo and Blackberry so wonderful... so what is the real problem?

And NOT gearing an iPod feature full phone toward music just nonsense. That is why I and a few Apple Zealots are waiting for the real iPod widescreen with touch screen UI... so we can have a place to store our 50GB of video and 50GB of music on a device that is just as wonderful as the iPhone.

Man... I so beat Apple to this iPhone prep stuff:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/310422/

A fantastic post, neven, and considering the fact that Apple employees regularly read MacRumors (and other, related blogs, web sites and such) it's not out of the realm of possibility that your post gave them the idea for such an email, which I received today as well.

In fact, I would even push that possibility to a slightly higher degree - as Apple puts out bits and pieces of information on upcoming software and hardware (the awareness factor) I wouldn't put it past them to then sit back and watch the community reaction and tweak changes accordingly. I personally don't have a problem with that idea, as it shows corporate listening abilities as one idea or another from a particular "fanboy" web site starts to rise to the top as a desired feature. Conversely, if they see an up swell in negativity towards a tossed bone, they may adjust accordingly as well.

I am particularly fascinated by the choice of Friday, June 29th (time of 6:00 p.m.) as the announced date and time of the release of the iPhone. It almost seems as if Apple was looking at pre-sale day "chatter" and decided to NOT go with the "midnight madness" scenario that I was dreading. It's the last Friday of the month. Payday for most people. It won't be available until 6 that evening. Time for people to cash their checks, go to the store. Allows for folks who have to work to get a chance. No need to show up at midnight and spend the night in a parking lot until the store opens. After reading all over the web about folks' angst at getting this thing on the first day available, it seems that Apple may have been making decisions over time, according to reaction.

Apple is fantastic; but, to me at least, I can't see the decision to have the phone available on the last day of June at 6:00 p.m. made in the Board Room way back in January. All we were sure of was "June." Did they fine tune it according to web discussion? Or am I nuts? ;)

didn't hurt the ipod

Didn't it? Everybody I know who bought a competing product did so for one of the above reasons.

The iPod did well (I really like mine), but it probably could have done even better, had it offered some of the other features people wanted.

Oh, and the battery is replaceable. I've done it myself on a 3rd gen iPod.
Oh, and the storage is expandable. Ditto.

But back on topic... I think a lot of people will buy this phone because it is an iPod with a ton of really cool features, like cell service. Not because it is a smart phone. I bet people will be looking and contemplating the iPhone that don't even know what a "smart phone" is.
well said! thanks!

But the real question is...

... what is the quality of the calls on iPhone??

Like most of you, I wish this device did more than it does, but my number one concern is that it's a decent phone, first and foremost!

Ever since I bailed from T-Mobile to Cingular to get the ROKR (and later, the SLVR), I have regretted that decision. Neither phone was very reliable at simply making phone calls in either of the two places I've lived during that time... the most recent being really ludicrous since I can see a giant cell tower across the street from my home office window!

To be fair, I live in a brick triplex, but my wife's RAZR gets much better reception. Every time I try to make or receive a call in my home office, living room or kitchen, it's a disaster. When a call does connect at home, it sounds like I'm inside of a bee's nest because of all the electrical interference the SLVR picks up. For no reason at all, the signal will often completely vanish while the phone is idle in my pocket. It's gotten to the point where I don't bother to use the thing too much, and I've built up nearly 5,000 rollover minutes as a result! And don't get me started about simple tasks like checking the weather using Cingular's awful MEdiaNet...

So for me, the biggest question about the iPhone is, can I make & receive clear calls on the doggone thing?? I'll find out soon enough... regardless, I am buying one because I am fed up with my current phone, and because iPhone has the best implementation of e-mail and a true web browser that I've seen thus far. Everything else is icing on the cake, as long as the phone part of it lives up to my expectations!

YA, but it's got multi-touch! :p

"with the flick of a finger..." Are they actually encouraging people to flick their phones  I would think flicking would be frowned upon, just like Polaroid asked that users not "shake it" as suggested by one particular song.

Monthly cost for the iPhone

So... how much does the damned monthly service cost? What's the point of keeping this a secret a mere two weeks away from launch?

I am assuming the monthly charge(s) would depend on the cell phone plan you purchase. Or, I HOPE it'll be that way.

Wait you want the dang thing to make phone calls well? What a revolutionary idea in cell phone creation.

Honestly, those arer all geek features. I think initially Apple is relying on a big enough part of the geek crowd to buy the phone but once it takes off and the prices come down, most people really aren't going to care about those missing features.

I don't have a problem with no Flash even though it would be nice to have since they are billing it as the real internet. Java though... who the heck uses that anymore on websites? The only site I know that does is Facebook and that's when you want to upload a photo.

3G in the USA is laughable and it drains the battery on devices like no other (my roommates BlackJack had to be recharged twice a day until he shut it off... now he gets up to 2-3 days).

8gb is enough and plus how much can you really expand with SD cards anyway... isn't the max like 4gb on them? Plus I would imagine that a 4 gig card would be pricey though I will admit I haven't looked at the prices.

And for those of us not in the USA, June 29 will be just another summer day. :(

For those of us that aren't switching to Cingular for no real reason June 29th will be just another crappy day in the US of A.

Yeah... besides the storage issue it is the best iPod I have ever seen... that's why I can't wait for that:

Widescreen iPod with touch screen UI and 120GB+ storage!

No user replaceable battery!

too slow for flash

I remember viewing flash on a 56k modem...not fun at all. If the phone doesn't have the speed, I think it is better to leave flash out. Many web developers have adandoned slow-speeders when developing sites, so we see many 300k+ flash files on pages. If flash was installed, everyone would be complaining about how slow it was. Unless they can do somthing about edge speeds before launch, I just can't see flash on this thing...if it is, I'll uninstall it quick!

It worries me that Apple has never mentioned supporting To Dos on the iPhone, just appointments through iCal.

This better simply be an oversight; if I can't track my To Dos, that could be a deal killer.

My point, and a lot of others points, are that the iPhone is expensive, and missing a lot of features.

The iPod only had to do one thing, play music.

The iPhone is three things, a phone, a music player, and an internet browser. If 50% of the content on the internet is unsupported by the internet browser, then you only get 50% of the internet.

I want my cell phone to make calls, I want my music and videos to sound and look good, and I want my internet to be the internet. Bug for bug all the internet.

I'm guessing the plan fees will be standard Cingular / AT&T for the voice minutes + $40/mo for unlimited data.
