... simply a MUST for launch. They are talking some pretty BIG TALK regarding Safari and OSX - the phone will get slammed in the reviews if Safari does not truly perform like a real browser.

for you. for the other 90% of iphone users -- not so much. as someone who does loads of flash development i'm as disappointed as the next developer, but not so myopic as to believe no flash = failure.

What about google calendar? That's the only calendar I am going to use.

As a soon-to-be MS Outlook switcher, and a fan of the google apps, I was just tinkering with a 'one calendar setup' yesterday, using google calendar (gCal) and iCal. (Trying to work without a .mac account) Here's what I decided to do:

- Input/revise/delete events in gCal
- For offline viewing on a Pro or MB: In iCal, open a new calendar and subscribe to gCal
- For mobile viewing on your iPhone or iPod: In iTunes, sync iCal

Having said all that, however... if I was to spend $$$ on an iPhone, I would have to go with a .mac account to take full advantage of iSync.

(Now I'm just waiting for a more robust google Contacts app!)

iTunes Account
To set up your iPhone, you'll need an account with Apple's iTunes Store. If you already have an iTunes account, make sure you know your account name and password. If you don't have an account, you should set one up now to save time later. To set up an account, launch iTunes, select the iTunes Store, and click the Sign In button in the upper right corner of iTunes. Sign in and you're ready to go.

Dumb question:

Does this mean you can buy songs direct from iTunes with the iPhone?

Dumb question:

No. At this present time you will not download from the phone, much like how you do not download from :apple:TV.

Jobs said that this is not the experience users want. The Mac is the central hub for managing all of this.

He has also been known to change his mind.

The lack of Java isn't going to hurt web browsing much.

Flash is nice for some things, but in practice it's mostly used to emit photons in patterns that annoy me (that is, to display ads). I was running for a few weeks with Flash uninstalled and was amazed at how pleasant Yahoo was to use after that.

I know, I know, I'm just trying to put a happy face :)) ) on the lack of Flash, but it may not really be that bad.

No Java = so what
No Flash = :) /:(

I think everyone is missing the point on Flash and Java. It is not going to "kill" the phone. However:
No Flash
No Java
No 3G
No real 3rd party development tools
No IM
No expandable storage
No feedback on keyboard

All of these are available on phones that cost less.

Don't get me wrong, I like the iphone, but Some of these advertisements frustrates me. They claim its a "revolutionary" phone, but i don't think it really is that amazing

Revolutionary:
radically new or innovative; outside or beyond established procedure, principles, etc.: a revolutionary discovery.

Whats so revolutionary about the phone part of the phone?

For starters, revolutionary is not meant to be taken as a dictionary term so much as a marketing term. But I'm sure you know that :)
Second, for a device in this day in age, not every component has to be revolutionary, imho, to be a revolutionary device.

The thing people, while the iPhone is missing some things, and is ho-hum in some others, there are parts that are truely sophisticated. This would be a multi touch display, UI, software, and integration with computers/software, as well as ease of use. These are things not known to the cell phone industry, and in the few corners that they are, they are not combined.

Apple computers are amazing, above par, and in general break some rules and fall under revolutionary at times. However, it's not because of the HD they use, or the graphics card they sport. And if you are looking for the fastest graphics card or HD then you better buy a different computer, or be prepared to mod (use the term loosely in this metaphore) the one you buy.

Apple does UI well. They do Software well. They do devices that the average person can use, and use well.
Apple takes technology that us nerds use every day, and make it easy enough for our mothers to use. Period.
Apple doesn't change the technology field by giving nerds something only nerds can use. They do it by helping average people grasp technology.

But back on topic... I think a lot of people will buy this phone because it is an iPod with a ton of really cool features, like cell service. Not because it is a smart phone. I bet people will be looking and contemplating the iPhone that don't even know what a "smart phone" is.

still NO MS EXCHANGE SUPPORT...aka PUSH email via EXCHANGE server.

what a waste of a state of the art email 'system' or 'client'....screwing ALL of the business customers. thanks apple.

I agree to a big extent. With Steve saying that the iPhone would be offering the "real" web (not just the "mini" web), not having Flash or Java is a pretty big ding to that idea.

We are getting some reports that Flash isn't being supported almost on purpose... They are supporting h.264 video because iPhone has a hardware-chip to process the video. However, supporting Flash would require the main CPU to process the content, which would be a more battery-expensive proposition.

Also, I'm pretty sure if they haven't built in an embedded java processor, then supporting Java would mean a big hit to battery life AND performance. I'm pretty sure that most mobile phones that support Java use java processors.

As I said earlier, just turn on IMAP support on your Exchange server, and you've got push email support from it since it supports IMAP IDLE (just like the Yahoo email account they're marketing)

...and speaking of ebay....I'm planning on buying a couple of iPhones and putting them on ebay. My questions are....how can I do this being that I have to sign a 2 year contract? Do I cancel the contract shortly thereafter? Then sell them on ebay and make some profit? I'm not sure how to do this and make some cash and also in turn help some folks out who couldn't get an iPhone? Stupid questions? Maybe, but I am curious.....

Looks like activation is going to be done through iTunes, and not at the stores!

This means no waiting in long long lines...just a credit card and you're good to go!

I wonder if that means that you can just pick up a handset an not bother signing up the contract? I know that is pointless for 50% of the features, but in the absence of a true widescreen iPod, then that sales model might mean it can be purchased and just not registered at no extra "cost". I'm assuming of course that there is nothing in the phone itself which prevents off-air use unless it has been signed up.

Steve Jobs has outright said that Java is a ball and chain and he wouldn't waste engineering resources on it for the iPhone.

I really can't think of any modern web site that requires Java to be useful, beyond some games.

I can think of plenty of Flash apps, though....

[Sarcsm]Yeah, because Apple has been all over the business sector before, and obviously by not continuing to do so, they are really giving all you people a big F U. [/Sarcasm]

Pah-lease

msn isn't among the supported emails listed, but wouldn't you be able to go to msn.com on the iphone and log in that way?

***Listing Policy Clarifications: Apple iPhone Pre-Sales and Post-Launch Sales***

June 08, 2007 | 01:10PM PST/PT

Here are listing policy clarifications that we are implementing effective immediately:

* Apple iPhone Pre-Sales are prohibited. This highly-anticipated device will be in high demand after the US release on June 29th, 2007. Prior to the release of similar high-demand electronics, we saw a high number of well-intentioned sellers unable to meet their pre-sale obligations to buyers due to restricted supply, as well as an increase in fraudulent listings for these items. To prevent similar problems with the iPhone, eBay is prohibiting all pre-sales of this device.

* Criteria for Apple iPhone Post-Launch Sales. In order to continue to ensure protection for our Community after these items are made available by the manufacturer, the following requirements have been put in place for the sale of the iPhone:

o The listing must include a unique photograph of the item or items
o Your User ID must be clearly displayed within the photograph (watermarks will not be accepted).
o To ensure buyer protection, PayPal must be the only accepted form of payment

Sellers will also be notified of these requirements during the listing process when using the Sell Your Item form.

buy the phone, wait 30 days, cancel the contract, pay the $200(?) cancel fee.

profit will be small.

Wirelessly posted (LGE-VX9800/1.0 UP.Browser/6.2.3.2 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

i have confidence flash will be there

However, all of those are not available on my current phone as well, as well as most people I know. So it's still an upgrade for the majority of the world

That said, I swore my next phone would support Java J2ME 2.0 after a failed final project in Java class after figuring out my phone only supported J2ME 1.1, which was aside from being basically useless in and of its self, also didn't allow any access to the phone's internal hardware.
Give and take I guess :)

So... how much does the damned monthly service cost? What's the point of keeping this a secret a mere two weeks away from launch?

So you get so hyped up in the frenzy of the launch that you'll be numb to the price gouging when it comes to contract sign up. I hope I'm wrong :D

It will be interesting to see what the price model is like when the phone hits the UK since most of the competition is almost given away with even a modest contract over here. Only another 3 to 6 months to wait. Might even have Leopard by then ;)

My daughter doesn't want an iphone, she wants a razr... goofball...
So, I will get the iphone for her, then sell it on ebay and buy her her pink RAZR.
Profit!
Might be able to pay for mine and my wife's iphones...

No, I'm pretty sure all they mean is, in order to set up your Address Book with all features listed, and in order to set up your Calendars with your info from your computer, etc... iTunes will be needed. It won't be used to activate the phone.
