Inside a dark booth after sunset. iPhone 5s. Focus and exposure on the menu board.

I'm sure it won't look perfect on a computer screen (especially as it's been compressed by whatever compression method the iOS Tapatalk app uses), but it preserves what my eyes saw pretty well.
To the OP: there is a lot that software can do. The other phones might have boosted the dark areas to look more pleasing, but I find that the iPhone (the whole line in general) aims to preserve what the eyes see.

If you want it to be brighter, focus/exposure lock on a darker part then. Use Camera+ for separate focus and exposure lock then. Give a crappy camera to a good photographer, they can take good pictures anyway. The way to go is to learn how to control your camera to get you the look you want.

Forgive me but I think you miss the point. I'm a normal guy. Give my phone to a "good photographer"??? What the hell??? They are like me!! We're people! Thanks for your advice but it's severely unwarranted with all that backhanded gloss. I'm kinda sorry I even posted this thread. Should of known it would of been a matter of time before the grandiose elite felt compelled to camouflage advice within a snark response. Apple fans smh.....

I don't have any complaints about my 5s camera, but I was blown away by my galaxy S4 camera for regular photos and video. Even low light video was amazing. I switched back to the iPhone since I needed an all around great phone for me.. Not just a phone with an amazing camera. That's just me though!

Ill be honest with you. My S4 takes slightly better pictures than my 4s did but there are so many filters to mess with that you can get lost in all of that. I haven't decided whether i want to get the 5s yet but out the box, iPhone still has the best point &shoot in my opinion. It took me forever before i could figure out how to get good quality photos on the GS4.

I have to agree. The GS4 camera UI is way cumbersome.

I don't know "backhanded gloss", whatever that is. It's just that generally if you use any camera long enough, you learn to live with its quirks and end up getting the look/atmosphere you want out of any camera. Any camera has its own quirks, and any camera can take a good photo. IMO the iPhone 5s (heck, even starting with the 4s) is plenty good enough tool for everyday use. The rest, is up to our own learning.

Ok, here are some shots I have taken with my iPhone 5.
These are untouched, unedited photos.

Yes my hand is steady, yes I tapped to focus and auto is on. these are NOT zoomed in.
Like i said, no novice. You judge. Click to view them in max size. they are grainy, out of focus with almost no sharpness. Mostly ALL my photos end up like this. No, there is no clear cover over the lens.

Wow, a photo of a baby in mediocre light and one from a moving vehicle are blurry? Must be the camera. The one of the three women is admittedly pretty blurry, but it looks like the autofocus just missed your target (which is easily fixed by tapping on the subject). The other two look fine to me, at least given the conditions. What exactly are you expecting?

The car wasn't moving. And if you have been following, I told you i know of all that. And it wasn't mediocre lighting. But I'll let you think you're right.

I don't know why people are saying the S4 is not good in low lighting, you just have to play with the settings... The problem is regular people don't tend to play with the settings... I will post 2 pics in low light with my GS4 so you guys can see the difference, then I'll do the same with the 5s and I don't wanna make any comparison between the 2 so no bashing thank you!

The 1020 spanks the 5s. I own both and use the 1020 when traveling or ping special events.

Xenon flash is the culprit with the white balance. Most people force the flash in and don't trust the focus led. 9 times out of 10, the flash was not needed in the first place. This produces yellow tinting, especially under fluorescent lighting.

The 5s is an excellent camera no doubt. But if you want to print, the 1020 smokes it.

Backlight, low light, and no light. Those pictures are exactly what I would expect. Turn on HDR (it will improve the pics).

Here is a game!

Guess which one was taken with and which one was taken with 5s

*ignore the apple. It won't let me upload the other apple.

When you get annoyed with the quality of your old phone's camera compared to a new one, the proper response is to buy a new one, not rattle your saber against the maker of your old phone...

The shots are fine.
The one with the baseball field is the prime example.
I just think you don't have a steady hand. Especially the pics with the 3 girls.

If you look at the other example shots in this post, you'll see the differences of your shots on the 5, and others on a 5.

Maybe it's the bigger screens or more pixels but wow the galaxy s4 takes gorgeous photos, even in low light. I felt like wow, these cheaper phones produce better results. Makes me wish I would've pre ordered the s4 just a little bit. I always felt apple had the superior product. Now I feel like less of a believer.

More pixels in this size sensor typically equals more 'noise' which in certain situations can be construed as detail. The iPhone 5s is a step up in quality....but if you've got time take a peak at Flikr or any photo sharing sites. You'll see the quality from a 'working' iPhone 4S/5/5s. They're capable of pretty amazing shots. There's only so much you can do with this size of a sensor in low light situations.

He's right, though. The S4 does take amazing pictures, even in low light. I'd know because I owned one before getting my 5S and it's the only thing I actually liked about the phone, save for the massive display. The pictures I took with my S4 far outclassed the pictures taken with my iPhone 5, no questions asked. And the pictures looked great on the computer, so I don't know what some people are talking about when they say the S4's pictures looked good only on the phone's display.

The main reason that the pictures were better than those that I took with the 5 seemed to be mainly because they were just so much sharper. I think this has to do with it having a bigger sensor (13MP vs. 8MP on the 5/5S). I'm not a pro photographer or anything so this could be completely incorrect, but in my opinion, having 13MP is better than the 8MP on the 5S. Yes, I'm aware that more MP doesn't mean better pictures, but in the S4, it seems that that's exactly what happened. My reasoning for this is that one, as I said before, I believe it allowed the phone to take much sharper pictures with more detail, and two, because it allows you to zoom into the picture on the phone or a computer, and not lose as much detail as you would when zooming in on a picture taken with an 8MP camera. I haven't really used the 5S's camera much yet so I don't really know how it compares, but I'm expecting it to be slightly better than the camera in the 5, but not as good as the one on my S4.

Don't get me wrong, the S4 definitely sucked, save for the camera (and the big display), which was definitely a winner and produced simply amazing shots.

Same thing. 13 megapixel sensor in the same size will definitely offer more detail in a perfectly lit low ISO situation. When it gets dark, the noise and artifacts show themselves on a larger screen or print. It's the same with point n shoot cams. Small sensors just can't take in as much light. As mentioned now several times...even a DSLR with a high speed 1.2/1.4 aperture can have a difficult time unless your settings and exposure AND your steady hand or tripod all become a factor.

For the record, I'm not a pro pic taker, nor am I a novice. I know there is an auto focus by tap and a lock available, but almost no image stabilization. It is out of pure observation that other phones produce better quality photos. Im just a regular guy taking regular pics like millions of others. No I don't need a class on pic taking nor a SLR. sure there are apps for post picture editing but such shouldn't be needed if said features were by default. It's ok you guys, apple can have weakenesses too. This is just my gripe. No over analyzation necessary. Like I said, I'm hoping the 5S proves me wrong.

Lots of excellent advice given thus far. You seem hell bent on having a crappy camera on your iPhone 5. Have you been in a humid situation? Listen in the shower? In the tropics and back into an air conditioned room? Have you dropped or bumped your phone? Condensation can be a problem as can knocking the lens out of alignment. Maybe take it to an Apple store and have it checked out. Lots of excellent examples shown in this thread and millions more on photo share sites. A lot of skills and experience are necessary to become a good photographer. Ansel Adams would've had a heyday with a camera as good as the iPhone 5!

Maybe you missed my post when I said that the others with phones took the SAME photos and theirs came out far better on their samsungs and htc's than my iphone. No complicated reasonings like you stated, no fancy talk of lenses or technique, this is everyday real life pics of real life people. The proof was in the pudding.

You've shown no proof. Much less pudding. The shots you shared weren't bad. But if condensation or a lens alignment problem are present you should have it checked out

I don't actually believe any of the camera's on phones are that good. I hardly ever use mine. They are a compromise. The best camera you can squeeze into a phone. Interestingly they are now working on the issue the other way round. Modern cameras have built in wifi etc. I use a proper camera.

Nikon 3200 that you have listed in your signature with the kit lens isn't much to write home about. It's going to take better shots than an iPhone but I'd bet dollars to donuts you don't carry it everywhere, where as your phone is always with you. Hence the cliche, the best cam is the one in your hand

The car wasn't moving. And if you have been following, I told you i know of all that. And it wasn't mediocre lighting. But I'll let you think you're right.

You truly seem obstinate and unable to take advice. You could have a faulty camera in your iPhone or just a bad photographic skill set. These are excellent cams for what they are but they're still tiny sensors with extreme limitations. If you want killer shots get even a decent Point n Shoot. Canon G15, s110, the new Sonys are incredible.

And lastly if you're still up for listening to wisdom and don't want to take a class pick up Brian petersons understanding light and exposure books. You'll learn a lot
Reviews around the web tend to completely disagree with your assertions.

Maybe you should have ordered the "cheaper" phone and be happy with it. /sarcasm

They make them for pros and enthusiasts! Theyre right the regular person thats not particularly interested in photography or looking for a high grade camera are gonna just use the camera they carry with them everywhere they go.I use mine for everything and the only thing I have even considered getting a better camera for is to do ebay listings and thats it.Now im not saying no one wants a camera but a lot of people arent gonna shell out the cash for another camera unless they have specific needs for one.

Exactly. I was in Paris this weekend, and it occured to me that so many people were using their phones as cameras. The camera isn't just a nifty little feature on phones anymore, it's probably one of the most important features nowadays. Just admit it guys, it's 2013, people may already be using their phones more than their cameras for photos. If not, that point will come soon.

if your getting annoyed with the camera quality buy a NOKIA! They have a gazillion mega pixels in their smartphones!
