Could Apple have not made the back of the iPhone x ceramic? I know it’s more scratch resistant but not sure about drops. For the price of these phones you would assume it’s gonna be pretty durable

Of course, it has never happened that you have it against your ear only for someone to knock your elbow.....you know by another phone zombie.....or of course, it is isn’t possible that your phone doesn’t land on the same bit of land you’re stood on?

Well, I don’t drop my phones to begin with. I just don’t let go of them, and when I’m using them, I have a reasonable grip on them. If I’m in public? I’m conscious about it.

So, the whole idea of dropping them this way and that way is rather anathema to my whole behavior model with an incredibly expensive piece of electronics I damn near depend on.

But, still, every time I’ve seen someone drop a phone, it’s been from a height of 3ish feet or so, which seems to be a more reasonable place to start a drop test, not 6’. Move up to 6’ after 3’ if you want, I suppose, but that’s really a rare, worst case scenario.

Yeah that's what I said to my friends for 5 years of having a more easily broken phone and then it still happened.

Well, Apple has had their fair share of faulty products due to poor design, including exploding batteries. It should be noted that Samsung was first with large displays, first with iris and face scanning, first with bezel-less design, first with OLED phones, and first and only with curved displays. They are masters at design. Samsung revolutionized new levels of man-machine interface with Smart Scroll. Apple? 3D Touch. A pressure sensitive display offers no real-world usability in a TOUCH SCREEN device. 3D Touch is a dud that no one uses. It's a failed attempt at developing the next-gen human interface.

Not to mention Samsung's POWERFUL CPU and GPU with MORE cores than Apple's pathetic A chips with how much RAM? Exactly. Samsung phones DESTROY EVERY iPHONE. EVERY. iPHONE. Just look at the specs. There's no comparison. More cores, more RAM. Apple's new A11 is just marketing, including the embarrassing name: Bionic. Are intelligent people supposed to be fooled by this? Bionic? Really? With Samsung, it's more, more, more. iPhones are less, less, less.

Also, Samsung phones don't come pre-loaded with bloatware. iCloud crap, Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Clips, iMovie, GarageBand, Music Memos, Health, Podcasts, News, iBooks, Reminders, and everyone's favorite: Stocks and Tips. Apple seems to think they can differentiate their software with productivity and creativity tools. Samsung doesn't even have a software portfolio akin to iWork and iLife and yet people just love their Galaxy phones. Samsung design wins.

Don't come pre-loaded with bloatware?? Ok, confirmed troll...

Samsung revolutionised new levels of man-machine interface with smart scroll?? Lol, there wouldn't even be scrolling in a phone if it wasn't for Apple. Actually there wouldn't even be smartphones if it wasn't for Apple.

Samsung do make great freezers though.

Get the hell out of here man.

Good thing I just opened up a new iPhone repair shop, going to make a killing off this

How dare you take advantage of our situation! Apple purposely made these things fragile, and now you're just sitting there waiting to pounce! Ugh, *bam* God effing, I'll be right over...

If you read between the lines on stories like this - especially the comments - people imply Apple should use glass that doesn't break. Unbreakable glass doesn't exist - and if it did, how would Apple cut it into the shape of an iPhone?

When iPhone 6 launched you all complained that it was bendable, because of a few isolated cases. Maybe MacRumors should rebrand as a "we like to criticise Apple" forum.

Yeah, I'll trust that glass breaks. I'm not clicking on these videos to give these idiots YouTube revenue.
Well to be fair, Apple is touting this as their toughest glass yet, and guess what, it won't withstand a drop from waist height.
I for one are glad for drop tests to see how the phone it likely to perform and to see how ******** Apples marketing is.
I wouldn't watch the square trade tests, they were just ridiculous and not real life situations.
Jerry rig one was, starting at knee height, then waist height and was going higher but the iPhone didn't make it beyond waist height. It did break on its third attempt at waist height which goes to show it depends a lot on how it falls.

Perhaps Apple marketing should not advertise it as their strongest glass yet then?

You could just like...not drop it
Yeah like accidents never happen? Just think if you don't buy one you will never break it.

But if they've put the strongest glass in any phone, their glass phone is least likely to break from all of them? After all, I'd expect damage dropping any appliance onto concrete.

How many “accidents” have you had where you dropped and shattered your phone? I’ve owned more than a dozen smartphones since the early 2000’s and never dropped a single one and had it shatter. Maybe you should treat the $1,000 device in your pocket like its worth a thousand dollars huh?

Not sure what you meant...

They have their strongest glass yet, but breaks from waist height - don't try to make a marketing event from it.

Apple is expecting more claims this year with the glass back because they have increased the price of the Apple Care+

Actually there wouldn't even be smartphones if it wasn't for Apple.

Apple didn't invent the smart phone, just made them better...

None, but accidents happen
and get off your high horse

I was never a fan of glass back. It is kind of sad that phones will be thicker, heavier and more prone to cracks because of this renaissance.

I agree, but at least when we had the iPhone 4 the glass back was swappable quickly and easily. Not quite the same these days.

High horse = “i take care of my expensive stuff”

I very much enjoy the view from up here. Thanks man

I've never dropped iPhones I've owned in over 7 years, plus I always have some case on it to prevent these types of accidents. That said for the first time I'll be getting Apple Care asap!

Breaking news. Company selling extended warranties shows that glass will smash if you drop it onto concrete. Suggests you buy extended warranty.

I guess you read the headline and drew your conclusions - did you actually watch the other 3 videos from folks who dont sell insurance policies and attained the same results

This just in... glass breaks.
Maybe the real message here is that a body made of glass isn't the best choice for a device that gets taken out of and put into pockets dozens of times a day and is in high risk of falling on the floor.
