Once we figure out the next major advance in battery technology .... which is taking forever....Tesla may very well become the largest car manufacturer in the world and Americas legacy brands probably die. Once we have the next battery Ford is going to only make trucks, and most will stop making unprofitable cars they only currently do for govt regulations. Right now EV big vehicles suck because once you load them up or tow battery life is a joke. So if you want and EV ... why buy some massive Escalade laden with legacy designs?
Here's to hoping for the paradigm shift on energy persistence. We don't need a road full of Civics that weigh as much as an petroleum burning F-150.

We need cars to be lighter - easier on the road maintenance - because they have smaller batteries that can hold 150-200 miles of range reliably while being as fast to charge as gasoline. Anything less and we will only make the EV transition by force and that is unsettling.

I don't think people will NOT buy a car because it has something other then carplay.

While I'm dismayed at the direction of the automotive industry the writing is on the wall. We're going to see subscriptions, ads, and our driving habits, locations will be sold to the highest bidder. This is going to generate a lot more money for GM then if they stuck with Carplay.

I've used Ford's infotainment system before they went to car play and Jeep's. Both are horrible compared to Carplay, Apple did a great job but alas the writing is on the wall.
I won't buy into a company that does not support it. We were leaning towards a Tahoe but bailed because I don't want to be around in two years when they push an update and remove it. F that noise.

Tesla does not offer Car Play either, and they seem to be doing just fine.
GM ain’t Tesla and they don’t have a billionaire jackass at their helm with itchy fingers on Twitter.
Biggest selling points of Tesla is their supercharger network and faster 0-60s compared to similar EVs like Mach-E. And with recent price cuts it’s the best bang for your buck. Then there’s the cult following.
If Tesla came into the market today and pulled the same stunt it wouldn’t fly as well.

My next vehicle requirements:

1) EV
2) CarPlay
3) AWD
4) Heated Seats

Not offering CarPlay is a huge miss for these manufacturers. Although, I already eliminated GM and Tesla for other reasons. I think a Ford EV is in my future but I'm also keeping an eye out on what Dodge is doing with the Charger EV.
Air conditioned seats are nice too 😁

I love a car that lasts 2.5 hours on a charge and talks 30+ minutes to "fill up"

Imagine purchasing a brand new Corvette and there is no CarPlay, LOLLL!

so what, i would still buy it. carplay isn't that big of a deal breaker as you make it out to be.

Just DO NOT BUY this car. Or ask the deal how much it would cost to install a 3rd party Carplay system. You can buy them at Best Buy.

On our driveway we have four cars. One is a 10 year old BMW with "state of the art" electronics, or it was state of the art in 2014. Aonther car has a $500 CarPlay compatible radio bought at Best Buy. Guess which one is better. Guess witch one cost more.

The trouble is that you can bet anything that GM (or BMW) will NEVER upgrade their software. But your phone will stay upgraded as much as you want it to be.

I'm a millennial, I've been using CarPlay since 2013, and I will NOT buy a car if it didn't have CarPlay. In fact, I love my 2020 Mercedes because it utilizes the full 13" non-touch display for CarPlay and you can use voice control to send messages and request songs. The 2021 and newer models use touch screen and do not utilize the full display for CarPlay, and it honestly prevented me from upgrading to a new car.

100% of my Gen-Z co-workers and friends clearly stated that they will look for a car with CarPlay. Aftermarket integrations aren't worth it. People who own Tesla cars complain the lack of CarPlay, including my brother.

CarPlay just makes sense.

GM isn't what it used to be.

Gas car owner never understand, that you VERY RARELY "fill up" and EV.

You only fill up with gas because you had to drive to a spacial place to buy gas and don't want to do that again soon. But what if there was fuel always available at home? And free fuels at work and at the post office and the store?

What you do with an EV is just plug it in where yu park it. and if it "fills up" or not you don't care.

Only if you plan to drive lie 300 miles one-way do you need the buy power away from your own driveway. How many days per year do you drive more than about ~300 miles from you home? In those few cases you charge and while you eat lunch.

that just may be your brother, i'm perfectly fine with how my tesla infotainment works. i rented plenty of cars on holiday in europe that came with carplay and it isn't a deal breaker like many claim it is here.

GM will lose on this and cave in two years and customers will be pissed if their cars can’t be updated to do carplay. They locked themselves in a corner
I agree they’ll probably be forced to backtrack, but it’s possible they realized this at the onset and they’re just doing it to see if the gains will outweigh the losses. And if it doesn’t, it was worth a shot. Maybe that’s their mentality.

Drove from LA to Vegas without stopping in about 4 hours. Parking garage had a free charging station. Drove back home 2 days later. Total time spent worrying about charging: 10 seconds. Cost of electricity: $0.

You driving a gas car? Probably a 10-20 minute diversion. $50-$100 fillup

Nope. The most expensive brand at GM is Cadillac. They have worked very hard to get their average customer age to go down, way down. And they have an internal study that shows that Cadillac customers have iPhones. 98 percent of them do.

The more affluent purchase Apple devices, value privacy, and could less and freebie Android phones.

I love that you both 'yes and'ed my story by explicitly posting what was probably written on the note described at the bottom of my post. 🤣 thatsthejoke.gif
