"Aftermarket services that introduce features not originally designed, thoroughly tested, and approved by GM may cause unintended issues for customers," the GM spokesperson said, in response to this matter. "These issues could affect critical safety features and may also void portions of the vehicle's warranty."
But only if GM can prove the aftermarket serivce/part directly caused the issue(s) per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

The “Magnuson-Moss Warranty—Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act” is a Federal law, US Code, Title 15 § 2301, Public Law 93-637. President Gerald Ford signed it into law on January 4, 1975.

It covers aftermarket auto parts in these ways:

  • “Simply using an aftermarket or recycled part does not void your warranty,” according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
  • According to the FTC, using aftermarket or recycled/re-manufactured parts doesn’t void a vehicle warranty.
  • The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void a warranty or deny coverage under the warranty because an aftermarket or recycled part was used.
  • The FTC defines an aftermarket part as a part manufactured by a company other than the original vehicle manufacturer/original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

If the vehicle owner is made aware of the potential risks and signs off on the aftermarket service work, then there shouldn't be an issue.

Good thinking GM, just continue to piss off the customers and ignore what they want. This will surely lead to increased profits!!

General Motors Posts Record Profit of $14.9B in 2024

January 28, 2025

General Motors Co. in Detroit today reported record 2024 profits of $14.9 billion, up 21 percent over 2023. The automaker did so with $187 billion in revenue last year, a 9 percent increase over year prior.

GM credits its performance to strong sales of full-size pickups, new and redesigned SUVs, and an expanding electric vehicle portfolio. Barra says she also expects GM’s growth to continue into 2025, despite the talk of trade wars and tariffs coming out of Washington, D.C.

Looking ahead, GM says it expects to bring in between $21 billion and $24 billion in automotive operating cash during 2025, which it expects to result in between $13.7 billion and $15.7 billion in profits.

sounds like a car issue. I used to have the same issue with my 2021 sonata where it would randomly disconnect. Dealership would blame apple software while apple would blame the car software. 1 year later Hyundai pushed a software update to the radio for the wireless carplay and all the issues went away.

It's also an issue that's more or less impossible to troubleshoot since both will just always blame the other, and vehicle software updates can be non-existent for some cars. BMW's iDrive 6.1 which was the first to support wireless CarPlay, was always wonky. My new car has their newer software and it's definitely much improved, although not perfect still.

You can only skate by on being an “American” brand for so long before your customers get wise.

Every Buick is made in China, their trucks are assembled in Canada, and their cars are rebadged South Korean Daewoos. Arguably the only American car GM has left is their big SUVs and the Corvette.

I guess they’re counting on their customers not being informed.

No skin off my nose, the American companies told me my money was no good when I wanted a sedan instead of a truck or SUV.

My relatives went to Mexico City last week and rode around a couple times in BYD EVs and were blown away at the fit, finish and quality of them.

The US Automakers are absolutely cooked if Chinese EVs are ever allowed in.

Their only path to survival is full blown protectionism in perpetuity.

Chevrolet Plymouth?
Plymouth was a Chrysler marque until Daimler killed it.
Pontiac, maybe? But Pontiac's dead too.
Maybe a Chevy dealer in Plymouth, Michigan or something? Packard's gone too... don't start your car company with the letter P!

No other iPhone had this issue for me with the same vehicle.

I put an after market CarPlay kit in my Volvo V40 and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. My biggest complaint with that generation of Volvos is their horribly unintuitive infotainment system and terrible sat nav. Being able to add CarPlay and a touch screen for around £150 stopped me from feeling the need to replace an otherwise fantastic car.

I will never consider buying another car without CarPlay in the future. Car manufacturers are terrible when it comes to infotainment software and should be grateful to Apple and Google for making it easier for them to offer cars with intuitive controls and connectivity.

Offering CarPlay and Android Auto is never going to stop them from making a sale, but refusing to offer it certainly will.

Yes it does, that’s exactly how it works on the Wireless CarPlay adapter I installed on my Jeep and in my wife’s Durango. You can see it connected to the WiFi on the adapter if you go into settings.

As I understand, it uses BT for negotiation and pairing, then uses wifi for data transmission. It needs both.

I still prefer wired CarPlay, personally.

I won't buy a car that doesn't support carplay (or requires a subscription). First thing I do is to pull the connected services by disabling the cell modem. I don't need to be tracked at that level.

Same. I disconnected the cell antenna on my VW a couple days after I bought it.

A few years ago, the American automaker General Motors (GM) announced that it would be phasing out support for CarPlay and Android Auto in its new electric vehicles, in favor of its own software platform. It was a controversial decision, as many drivers who are in the market for a new vehicle consider CarPlay to be a must-have feature.

Looking to capitalize on the situation, one GM dealership near Detroit, Michigan last year began offering an aftermarket CarPlay installation service in GM's newer EV models. But, according to a report this week from automotive blog The Drive (via The Verge), GM recently blocked the dealership from offering that service due to safety concerns.

"We have made the difficult decision to discontinue this product," said the LaFontaine Chevrolet Plymouth dealership, on a website that previously offered the CarPlay installation service. "This was not a decision we made lightly, but due to a variety of factors, continuing to offer this product is no longer viable in the long term," it said.

A spokesperson for GM told The Drive that unapproved aftermarket services "could affect critical safety features," and pose other issues.

"Aftermarket services that introduce features not originally designed, thoroughly tested, and approved by GM may cause unintended issues for customers," the GM spokesperson said, in response to this matter. "These issues could affect critical safety features and may also void portions of the vehicle's warranty."

It is unclear if the aftermarket CarPlay system actually poses any safety issues, or if GM is simply unhappy that one dealership decided to go against the company's decision to focus on its own software platform. It is also unclear if customers who already had the installation service completed will be affected in any way.

Well, they were using OnStar to sell your driving habits to your insurance company so that your rates would go up, and implying you had to accept the terms of service to buy the car, so yeah, not terribly unexpected.

No need for a GM car in my driveway.

You hope a company fails and 162,000 GM employees lose their jobs, not to mention all the jobs lost from adjacent and ancillary businesses, all because you're upset that GM doesn't want to offer CarPlay?

Can't believe 7 people (so far) agree with this sentiment.
I think you're taking their comment a little too literally.

Its probably safe to assume they mean they hope that people vote with their wallets and force GM to realises that they cannot take their customers for granted, removing popular features and functionality without it affecting their bottom line.

Since GM actually builds the Honda Prologue (Blazer), they enable CarPlay in those vehicles… not knowing what exactly that dealership offered, but it certainly seems GM wants to sell the service and get your data, nothing else. Why do they not disable CarPlay on their ICE vehicles?

My understanding is that it's only the GM EVs that don't have CarPlay

They are pumping out plenty of gas sucking urban tanks

We have a Lightning with Carplay and Tesla without. As the Tesla does have a nice UI and all, I still prefer using Carplay in the Ford
I feel like having Carplay would make sense for any auto maker to just add on. It can be used without taking away from the main underlying UI that can still also be used.
We have Lexus with CarPlay. Will not purchase a vehicle without it. So GM (Goodbye Motor Company) is forever not in a plan.
