You hope a company fails and 162,000 GM employees lose their jobs, not to mention all the jobs lost from adjacent and ancillary businesses, all because you're upset that GM doesn't want to offer CarPlay?

Can't believe 7 people (so far) agree with this sentiment.
Well, if they see that it fails they can correct course. Bad decisions have consequences.

I wouldn't buy a car without Carplay. These days, I also would not buy any car made in the US...

A few years ago, the American automaker General Motors (GM) announced that it would be phasing out support for CarPlay and Android Auto in its new electric vehicles, in favor of its own software platform. It was a controversial decision, as many drivers who are in the market for a new vehicle consider CarPlay to be a must-have feature.

Looking to capitalize on the situation, one GM dealership near Detroit, Michigan last year began offering an aftermarket CarPlay installation service in GM's newer EV models. But, according to a report this week from automotive blog The Drive (via The Verge), GM recently blocked the dealership from offering that service due to safety concerns.

"We have made the difficult decision to discontinue this product," said the LaFontaine Chevrolet Plymouth dealership, on a website that previously offered the CarPlay installation service. "This was not a decision we made lightly, but due to a variety of factors, continuing to offer this product is no longer viable in the long term," it said.

A spokesperson for GM told The Drive that unapproved aftermarket services "could affect critical safety features," and pose other issues.

"Aftermarket services that introduce features not originally designed, thoroughly tested, and approved by GM may cause unintended issues for customers," the GM spokesperson said, in response to this matter. "These issues could affect critical safety features and may also void portions of the vehicle's warranty."

It is unclear if the aftermarket CarPlay system actually poses any safety issues, or if GM is simply unhappy that one dealership decided to go against the company's decision to focus on its own software platform. It is also unclear if customers who already had the installation service completed will be affected in any way.

Funny thing I was walking to my old GMC Envoy at my hospitals parking lot with its after market car play and noticed 90% of the cars were either Honda or Toyota a random Lexus or BMW and was kinda shocked. I’m also noticing a ton of Mazdas now. I am finally going to get a new car but I’m only looking at Honda, Toyota or Mazda AWD crossovers I can’t imagine getting a car with no CarPlay support.

GM is pulling an Apple move. Hehehe.

I think Apple will see a lot of this in the future. What goes around turns around.

PS: But don’t worry Apple. In the EU there will be a regulation (if is not already) where infotainment units are interchangeable as long as the interfaces are compatible (there is a standard set of features and protocols in place allowing this units to exchange vehicle data to be displayed and so on).

When I was shopping for a new car recently, I didn't bother looking at GM or any other make that doesn't support CarPlay. The vehicle I got supports a wireless connection, and it's been flawless. I almost never use the stock infotainment system.

My relatives went to Mexico City last week and rode around a couple times in BYD EVs and were blown away at the fit, finish and quality of them.

The US Automakers are absolutely cooked if Chinese EVs are ever allowed in.

Their only path to survival is full blown protectionism in perpetuity.
Why do you think Elon gave Trump $250M?

Seems to me there is a level of hypocrisy going on here.

Yesterday everyone was complaining that Apple had to provide an API so third-party smartphones could connect to the iPhone. How is this any different?

GM are not obliged to provide access to CarPlay. So what if they want to keep it a closed system so they can charge a subscription. That’s exactly what Apple have been doing for years.

To coin a phrase often used on here, Apple can always build their own car.

I absolutely love my EUV. I'd consider upgrading, or maybe getting a 2026 EUV, if they had CarPlay. But an additional $15/month or whatever they are charging now is a bit much for me so that I can use Spotify handsfree and maps.

The Honda badged Blazer looks nice, I just wish it had a bit better charging speed.
I got the Acura ZDX, based on the same GM platform. Charging speed is better than the Prologue, and so is the range. Plus CarPlay!!! I wish it charged as fast as a Tesla but, it's been mostly fine for my traveling needs.
Personally not buying/leasing any car if it does not have CarPlay.

Owned GM and Ford cars decades ago. For the past nine years I switched to Toyota and would never go back to either GM or Ford. Lastly, why a manufacturer would not support a well-established platform (i.e., CarPlay) does not make sense. I would not trust GM to make an interface let alone a car.

Pathetic ...but about what I'd expect

I've had multiple Chevy Bolt EVs and LOVE THEM

But they are great largely because they were collabs with LG and mostly just Chevy in name/badging. I give them credit, for sure, for creating a simple and reliable, "it just works", car platform for it though. GM does know how to make a basic reliable "car".

It's hard to imagine buying another GM EV given how they've acted in the last few years around some of these decisions.
My Bolt EUV is probably my favorite car I’ve ever owned. There's an app on TestFlight right now that lets you mirror your iPhone screen through CarPlay. I doubt it’ll ever be on the App Store, but it's nice being able to finally watch video on the Bolt's big screen while charging (it's probably illegal to try using this while driving so don’t do that!).

GM kind of upset me because they’re temporarily taking away their Apple Watch app to "improve it." I wouldn't really be surprised if it never comes back. Here’s the note I got from them this morning on it. Though, to be fair, it was never too reliable to begin with.

We have Lexus with CarPlay. Will not purchase a vehicle without it. So GM (Goodbye Motor Company) is forever not in a plan.
When we purchased our last two cars Lexus/Toyota was saying "no CarPlay" so we didn't replace the Lexus with a Lexus and got a Mercedes instead. Now that we've had it for nearly 9 years, I prefer it to the RX450h we had and we won't be going back. So that is 2 car sales so far they've lost so far and potentially more in the future. At least Lexus came to their senses, but it was too late for our purchases when they did. We wouldn't even consider GM for a variety of reasons, the lack of CarPlay being one.

I know car makers really want our data, but this seems over the top. Why not let the vehicle owner choose what software suite they prefer to use in their own car?
Because they know that the smart people wouldn’t choose theirs. And they know their own homegrown one, sucks. It’s why we have Apple CarPlay in the first place.

My next car may be a Lexus because I have been loving the styling of them. I will never ever consider a GM.
