Forcing drivers to use a OS that is synced to nothing, developed by a NON-tech company.
Less options. Okay GM.

Honestly I'd respect them more if they just didn't have a screen at all.

"can have issues like bad connections, slow response times, compatibility issues, and connectivity problems"

Yup, car software is well-known for being responsive and well designed. That's why Carplay was invented, because in-car software is so good.

Honestly, when shopping for a car, no matter the brand or how much I like the car otherwise, not having CarPlay is a deal breaker. The whole point is to make driving with a phone safer. GM... Girl, bye.

What an unimaginably stupid thing for them to say. In the auto industry if you're going to make safety claims you need to have DATA to back that up, and they have nothing to offer. Zero.

It's clear they simply made a business deal with Google, and have to pretend in public that there is any other reason for it other than some shady business.

Apple says 70% of car buyers in the U.S. don't even consider a vehicle if it doesn't support CarPlay. You know why this is? Because all cars are exactly the same, and no one cares at all which manufacturer they are buying from. People look for small amenities to differentiate one vehicle from another.

This is why Tesla gets away without needing CarPlay, because they are not like every other car on the market. They have enough of their own differentiators to get people's attention.

If GM was concerned about safety they would make engines and transmissions that dont fail at alarming rates while driving. The least of GM's issues is the radio software. At least I could use CarPlay while waiting for a tow truck.

As it happens, no one cares, and continues to buy Tesla's anyway, because "privacy" is a massively overblown concern in almost every arena, but few so much as this.
I'm going to go on a limb that people keep buying Teslas for other reasons and do not even consider privacy in cars.

I'm also going to go on a limb to say that you do not know that privacy concerns are so overblown in vehicles. I too chased all the links that Mozilla report provided and read through Subaru (what I recently bought) privacy policy and things are very unclear. It might be overblown. It might not be, however, because the language they use is not very descriptive. What are those "audio recordings" they speak of? That is the problem: that we are just not equipped enough to even know, even if we cared to know.

There will be (IMO) time of reckoning in auto industry as far as privacy and data collection is concerned but that time is not here yet.

The claim of improving safety would seem a little less like bs if you just decided to nix the infotainment entirely. A screen is distracting (and therefore a safety risk) no matter what’s on it. CarPlay or not. Might want to go back to the drawing board and come up with a better excuse 😂

Earlier this year, General Motors (GM) announced plans to phase out Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto in its future electric vehicles, with the company instead relying on an infotainment system co-developed with Google.
GM knows that collecting all the user data it can will make them a lot of money in the long run. I am guessing Apple CarPlay doesn't give them access to the data they want. However, they couldn't nix CarPlay and keep Android Auto because that wouldn't be defendable. So they did the next best thing, they worked with Google to create an OS that sucks up as much data as possible from their consumers.

Anyone that buys a GM product is a fool.

It's funny how many people tell me they wouldn't even consider a car without CarPlay. It'll be interesting to see how GM alienates themselves.

Earlier this year, General Motors (GM) announced plans to phase out Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto in its future electric vehicles, with the company instead relying on an infotainment system co-developed with Google. This has not been a popular decision with iPhone users, and today, GM provided some additional insight into the decision in a discussion with MotorTrend.

CarPlay-Phone-Call.jpg

According to Tim Babbitt, GM's head of product for infotainment, GM has driver safety in mind. CarPlay and Android Auto can have issues like bad connections, slow response times, compatibility issues, and connectivity problems, leading drivers to be distracted from the road with smartphone troubleshooting.

Babbitt claims that drivers will be less likely to pick up their phones with a built-in system that does not rely on a service like CarPlay, leading to improved safety on the road. GM does not have any data to prove that an infotainment system is less distracting than CarPlay, nor has it done any testing.

Babbitt cited J.D. Power data suggesting issues with CarPlay and Android Auto are common complaints from vehicle owners, with customers often blaming the vehicle manufacturer rather than Apple or Google.

The infotainment system that GM plans to adopt instead of CarPlay will have integrated Google apps, including Google Maps and Google Assistant for voice commands, rather than a third-party navigation system. As MotorTrend points out, eliminating CarPlay will provide GM with more control over driver data, and it will allow GM to offer subscription services and apps that allow for purchases of food, gas, and other sundries.

Back in August, GM said that choosing not to offer CarPlay would give it more information about charge state information to assist with navigation routing and provide a better user experience.

CarPlay will be eliminated in electric vehicles under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands. Combustion vehicles from GM will continue to support CarPlay until they are phased out in favor of an all-electric lineup in 2035.

These are stupid people. They make the car safer in many ways. Also, fun. Are you going to make a new GMOS? No you aren’t. How long will your cars be kept? Should be a long time. Most people love playing their music, news, maps — not those boring maps that are never updated— that they have gathered with the phones. Tell you want you do: become a software company. Make your Chevy come with a Chevy Watch, and make a Chevy App Store. Keep it updated doe every time there’s a software problem. Probably need to empty 10,000 software engineers and designers, plus probably hardware updates to the car servdral times a year. Apple and Google know what they’re doing, and both have the personnel to keep things going. Very few people will be happy here. Why to mess up your popular EV.

On the other hand, lots of people will figure out how to put 3rd party CarPlay/Android Auto receivers, which work better, and are cheaper, than any car radio or DVD player EVER.

Another reason to not buy GM. Since they want to think for us and determine what we want. Like you can buy any color card from us you want, as long as it is black.

Please go read the Mozilla report. I mean you do not have to (as you did not so far).

This is very much not about email address. Instead, it is about privacy policies essentially saying things like "you consent to us getting audio recordings from your car" and "anyone you drive in your car automatically accepts our privacy policy".

I'm willing to have a discussion here but you are not trying.

Thank goodness. If GM had carplay they would be a total hazard like all those $70K+ hacked Model 3 Teslas in leave the world behind. I mean, this is all so shockingly (and libelously!) unsafe.

With this new system a GM owner can confidently listen to their youtube while waiting for the chips needed to control the warming of their seats.
