or

GM Says It's Favoring Infotainment to Make Drivers LESS Safer

I think they want data control.

GM is little more than a zombie company now. They really should have just gone bankrupt as Romney said.
Huh? General Motors had record profits last year. That was a sore point with the UAW during the strikes. Please try to keep up…

IMO, distracted driving is a huge problem but the solution isn't a different distraction. It's not even "less distraction." It's better sensors and automated compensation techniques, because these solutions also work with drowsy drivers, drivers who are distracted by children or other events on the road, people having health emergencies, etc.

Record profits
When they have sold 40k car and 60k trucks for 20k more and since Gm does the financials part of car sales as well which has brought in more fees due to the increase in interest rates. Wait to see how many new cars are being repossessed currently and in the future.

GM is making money hand-over-fist. They can afford to dump Apple.
CarPlay was an added expense for GM as well as for the consumer…it’s a win-win.

Remember folks, it is for your safety! Think of the children!
(It is not; it is about getting control of the app store; manufacturers do not like that they are just an external monitor for devices and want to drive their own subscriptions.)
Goes deeper than that, GM wants your data. They will also start to have more subscription based functions in their newer cars.

I have been a GM customer for almost all of my life. So it’s hard for me to say this: but they are lying. Taking CarPlay out of their cars is not about increasing safety, it is about increasing profits. They are going to replace CarPlay with their own system that requires you to pay for each service that you add to the infotainment system. And pay monthly for each one of them. They can see what is going to happen if they keep doing this,by looking at my new vehicle. It’s a Toyota. I love my 14 inch infotainment screen that has CarPlay access the entire screen.

Whatever GM, all you did for me is remove your cars from my future purchases list.

I had a non-carplay car, it was a Tesla. I had to **** with my phone more just to listen to music than any other vehicle I've owned. Just because your implementation of Carplay was **** and crashed a lot doesn't mean cars who do it right have any issues. My Polestar 2 and Carplay have worked great since they added the feature and my Defender works seamlessly and even connects to the right phone depending on whos driving.

Yep, they gotta turn it into a subscription so they can make money off of it. They will probably do what BMW did and charge for heated seats and other comfort things. Then act shocked when they aren't selling as many cars.

Wait, so they're getting rid of Android audio which is made by Google because of all the problems and then developing their own system with Google? I guess if GM ultimately have control over the code and can fix it themselves it makes sense?

Not that I agree with this decision, but I encourage competitive diversity. Let's see how it goes for them. Maybe they'll be able to offer something others who support multiple ecosystems can't. No-one is forcing anyone to buy a GM car, so time will tell.

I think you just hit the nail on the head!

Since when does GM care anything about the safety of their customers? The massive ignition key switch defect comes to mind, where it took them a decade to issue a recall.

the only time I can not avoid is the rental car company. they will probably only have GM cars available since no one wants it. Then I will be forced to use infortainment system - and may be more dangerous for me since I am not familiar such system.

I rented a Polestar which had CarPlay and Android Automotive (the built-in system, not Android Auto) and I never felt the need or desire to connect my phone. Android Automotive performs what I need which is Spotify integration, and navigation using Google Maps. I like the fact that I don't have to go into another portal so to speak that is different than the rest of my car. There's something peaceful about not having to deal with two different UIs. That's what simplicity is about.

The new UI developed by Google for GM cars should be enough for the vast majority of people.

Act I: So, you go to a GM lot ... and ask where do I plug-in my iPhone for CarPlay. Act II: Sales person stares blankly.
Act III: You walk out.

I want to see this happen on YouTube videos.
