I wouldn't be surprised that within a year, after watching disappointing sales of GM's newest EV's, GM backtracks and will reprogram their UI to include CarPlay and true Android Auto. The first GM EV to allow CarPlay and Android Auto again: the 2025 Chevrolet Bolt, which is now more or less scheduled to come out late 2024 as a 2025 model.

Why is this a new article? This was reported months ago that they were dropping CarPlay and AA from their EV lineup and keeping it in their ICE vehicles. I guess the new info is their bonehead reason. They are only doing it to charge people subscription fees and that can't be done through CarPlay or AA.
but the world is forcing this. No more IC vehicles will be sold.

One of the nice things about CarPlay and Android Auto is the updates you’ll get over the years, both to the OS and apps. GM’s solution’s functionality will almost certainly be stuck with whatever it does on day one. They’ll have no interest in doing anything after sales.
And it is much cheaper/easier to replace a phone than a car

I always found it odd that carplay notifies that you have a message but won’t show you the message. I always want to pickup the phone to see the message.
"He Siri, play the message" works for us in two Lexus models. One wired, one wireless.
Did you try that?

Never been a huge fan of GM vehicles anyway. But that could be easily remedied with an aftermarket stereo or other aftermarket connectivity device. And given new car prices these days, if you can afford that new car you can afford to get an aftermarket stereo.
That may not be possible. If they integrate other functions into the screen, then you cannot replace the head unit like you can on older cars. There are wiring solutions that do allow this but as systems become more complex, that option may not always work - especially if they have the intent to create a closed looped system.

Lol, I love that in the "correction" that they sent to MacRumors in no way references or disproves that they've done no testing, nor have evidence that an infotainment system will be less distracting than Carplay.

Funny though how their internally produced system is being produced on tandem with Google... the people who developed Android Auto. Isn't that kind of like saying, "Hey, I'm not paying you licensing fees for your software and letting you take all the data. Now, show me how to make one of these things!"

Looks more to me it's all about greed (selling your data) than it is about "customer safety". Unless you're going back to Analog (which is the safer alternative), you're not making the customer any safer.

I’m not a GM buyer anyways so this decision does not affect me but I know that this won’t be a popular decision and people are going to be very upset when their shiny new Chevy won’t provide them Apple Carplay.

The world is forcing them to drop carplay because of EVs? 😂😂

Someone better tell Ford, Hyundai, etc that they’re not allowed to have carplay in EVs, think they missed the memo

Me, in my new GM car with no CarPlay or Android Auto, looking at the driver in the car next to me staring at the phone in their hand while they've not noticed the light is green and is still sitting there.

No, I haven't and probably the majority of people who use CarPlay now haven't because we don't have $70,000+ for a new Audi, BMW, Mercedes or Volvo. You're a bit out of touch with most people.
Best selling car in Europe 2023 is the Tesla Model Y, which starts at around $60k so I'm not so sure about that.

So, I recieved a lot of negatives for this. People who find CarPlay amaaaaazing, what cars are you using it in? I mean, sure, if it's in an aftermarket head unit bc your car is old, or if it's in a car from around 2014-2015 when it was released then it is probably better than what is built in.
Have you looked at modern car navigation and setups? Look at Audi, BMW, Merc, heck, even Volvo. The built in navigations/entertainment are so far beyond limited carplay I see no reason to use it. Integration with headup displays, instrument cluster and generally the car is not something I'd like to miss out on.
Using with two Lexus models. one wired, one wireless .

Both work great for us

Sorry. I meant the world is forcing EV. Look at California and other states in the US

I thought this was a terrible idea until they explained it was to look out for me and my safety. They care about me and that’s all that really matters.
Until you want to use some aspect of your iPhone that GM has banished from their paywalled system and you look down at your iPhone and…

oh PLEASE.

My last car was a GM and the infotainment system was absolutely horrible. Nothing but crackling when you played music over Bluetooth. It was one of the reasons I ditched the car.

Hoping to see the vehicles that successfully implement the new next generation CarPlay in 2024/2025, I mean 2025/2026.

People do not buy cars because of the infotainment system, but they do favorize certain functions in their search parameters. I think GM will come to regret this decision, but hey, it's their perogative. I was looking at the Silverado EV, but when they announced this months ago, I immidately started looked at alternatives - BMW, Polestar, Kia, Ford. There are plenty...

I've found that pretty much every "Infotainment" interface made by automakers should be considered a crime against humanity... They're all garbage. GM, Ford and BMW have constantly competed for the title of worst of the worst for years.

Especially when they put anything beyond audio behind the LCD screen UI.. HVAC, lighting settings.. etc. Worst UX ever.

But, that isn't even what most are objecting to here... (Hell, I prefer a "no screen" dash. I want dials and buttons and knobs!)

What I object to, is being both nickel and dimed by GM for subscriptions for everything, and GM also selling my data. Not just double-dipping after I've purchased a car, but triple-dipping.. making me pay three times? And, on top of all of it, preventing me from using the UI/UX of my choice... Screw that.

GM could somehow create the best in-car UI/UX ever, and I'd still object to the terms. Paying full price for a car that's going to both subscribe me to death and sell my data to the ******s at Google? No. Just.. no. Paying more for any of these cars than my parents first or second home, and not having the choice of UI/UX, and making up BS excuses for that limitation? No.. Just.. no.

Did I mention.. No?

I did. Good.

No.

Maybe. My jeep (which is an awful vehicle btw) car play is implemented in a window within the manufacturer’s entertainment system. It makes everything in CarPlay slightly smaller, but it allows for implementation of CarPlay without modifications to the physical screen.

Yes they will, just as used in CA. The infrastructure is there for good ol gas, not even close for EV.

I can afford to do so just fine without a thought, but I will never buy a new car. My other financial heroes have taught me this, let others pay for the depreciation, then buy the highest spec'd car you can find.

Did you know that most millionaires that did not inherit their money drive a lowly Toyota that is 10+ years old? The wise don't throw away money easily on a depreciating asset. Technology with cars is one of the worst things to buy...
