Don’t believe so. But there we’re getting a ton from Google as the default search engine. If Google is paying to be the OS in a car to the manufacturer like they are then they should be up for antitrust because it’s a similar situation which is interesting. I think the car manufacturers don’t want to run trouble shooting for Apple CarPlay is why they want to nix it. They get no revenue from it and don’t want to provide updates for it to work when something isn’t working.
Aside from RIM and Google are there any other RTOS suppliers for automotive use?

Getting confused on all this ... won't the GM center screens just default to Apple CarPlay 1.0 if I plug in my iPhone?

No. That's why cars built before CarPlay was introduced won't work with it... and cars that don't have the software built into the in-car infotainment systems also won't work.

And I find it interesting that GM is saying that CarPlay could affect the safety of the driver and passengers, but their own new whiz-bang subscription service won't. It's all about greed.

I guess it is back to buying a separate stand alone display system for CarPlay?

Not necessarily, no. There’s a different older thread about this long here on MacRumors from when the EV Blazer came out and GM didn’t allow CarPlay or Android Auto. Just like this post, it was full of what sounds like planted GM higher ups trying to talk up a better experience. I had to drop out of that due to what almost seemed like bullying? Was weird.

(GM, or whomever, would need to include the app that allows projection/Lock Screen access for CarPlay or AA. They could easily remove the app, even, with an update later)

Did GM nix the screen itself to make driving safer? Or is a screen okay (and some really big ones in some of it's vehicles) but carplay isn't? So it's okay to interact with a screen, just not one with carplay on it?

Logic makes no sense.
There is a screen, and the OS is Android Auto (don’t recall exact name) which supports both CarPlay and Android Auto natively but GM disabled that.
And furthermore, it’s only for new EVs like the Blazer and Equinox, all older ones (Hummer, Lyriq, Silverado, Bolt) still support CarPlay. And the icing on the top, all current and new ICE vehicles still support CarPlay…
Go figure, it’s about subscription services…

One more thing to think about. I remember seeing videos on YouTube about people getting CarPlay to work on older Ford vehicles by swapping out the USB ports with the ports from a later model. What that tells me is that there could be multiple layers to "it doesn't support CarPlay". On the Fords, obviously the infotainment display supported CarPlay, but access was blocked by the USB connector.

However, with all of that said, I would not expect pre-CarPlay vintage cars to support CarPlay just by plugging them into the USB port. And to get back on topic (GM nixing CarPlay), I would expect GM to be more actively blocking/not allowing CarPlay on their vehicles.

I think most higher ups at GM are just drunk on their own Kool Aid or too afraid to say anything in lieu of losing their jobs. At some companies, it's usually someone WAY out of touch with what's happening, makes the "all or nothing" speech and people either have to quit or get fired if they oppose. Shut up and work.

"However, the plans unraveled after Abbott announced his departure for health reasons in March. A month later, Edward Kummer, the man behind General Motors' controversial anti-CarPlay and Android Auto strategy, decided to leave the company. It looks like GM's bet on in-house software based on Android Automotive will not pan out. In a new move, GM decided to significantly cut its software and services workforce."

I wonder if GM's strategic path is being set by a broken Roomba...

So they backed down after they made a huge blunder but they don’t have the integrity to admit it. That doesn’t build confidence, gain my trust and change my opinion
I’m not sure they ever backed down. I think it was misreported that all their cars wouldn’t have CarPlay when they only ever said EVs.
