Is there any any ANY email app out there (except the native app) that will let you customize notification sounds??? Gmail user here, too.

Boxer, Mailbox and the Gmail app do not.

Yeah, I want to like the Gmail app enough to completely switch over to it (I'm trying it out though), but there are a few things that bug me.

1.) When I have the switch set to silent, the native mail app will still vibrate notifying me of a new e-mail. I do not see that option in the Gmail app.

2.) In the email list screen, I can only view 6 messages on my iPhone 5 with the Gmail app, but can view 8 messages in the list in the native mail app because with the native app I can set it to have only 2 rows per message (top for the sender, bottom for the subject). Is there any way to not show the first line of the body in Gmail (and reduce each message from 3 rows to just 2)?

3.) When in my photos folder, I can't tap a photo and have it send from the Gmail app. I have to go into the Gmail app first and then tap the attachment paper clip. Also, it appears that I cannot attach a video to an e-mail via the Gmail app (only photos).

I can't delete any of my gmail with ios 7 but i can archive them. Any solution????

Look around you mail account settings in iOS for that account, specifically in the advanced section there.

When I get my new device I will have gmail forward to my @icloud account and use my gmail as the sent address so all should work as it does now with exchange. As others have said, if you don't change your device and you were grandfathered in, exchange will continue to work.

Cowboy, is it as simple as that? Because that sounds great. Is there much delay from having email forwarded to iCloud? And how do you set up to reply from the gmail account?

iOS7 Mail App

I have had the developer version of iOS7 on my iPhone 4S and did not see any issue with my Gmail account. I have my domain hosted by Gmail and my work email as well. I would not want to use separate apps, and I see no reason to force feed my Gmail to iCloud. We shall see what happens when I get the 5S shortly!

I gave up on the gmail app. I forwarded my gmail to outlook.com, setup it to send as gmail, and then setup my iPhone to sync with outlook.com. The only difference is if I access it from the web and I know have folders instead of labels.

iCloud just isn't powerful enough for me with its filtering, etc.

Gmail app is so slow to load (and possibly a bit of a battery hog). And I'm not a fan of Mailbox or forwarding to iCloud etc.

But I guess Gmail is my best option for now...

It disappeared for me. No idea why.

I hate using a third party mail app because of the way notifications have to be formatted.

You had to set it up as an exchange server...not by just hitting Google under Add e-mail account. Also, it is tied to hardware so it won't work on new phones.

You can have the other email account forward it's to gmail. Like me, I have yahoo forward it's mails my gmail account

Many employers have strict policies against forwarding work emails to gmail. Its a fireable offense at my employer. Besides, who wants all their work emails in their personal gmail? And then when you delete at work, it wouldn't delete at home. Terrible idea all around.

Thinking about forwarding my gmail to iCloud and using that...

That's what I do. I forward 3 mail accounts (2 of which are gmail) to my iCloud account. So far it's working great and iCloud has been reliable (unlike when it first was introduced).

Now that mailbox is a joke in iOS 7 (at least for now) what are people using? Am I really going back to the stock app?

I actually just typed this up yesterday, perhaps it will help some people in this thread:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1639069/

Thanks. I saw that thread, but for my needs, I thought I had a workaround slightly different. May be able to leverage it though for sending.

The #1 thing that I would like to be able to do is:
  • Use the native iPhone email app
  • Use my Gmail account to send emails
  • Have those emails send from my personal xxx@yyy.com account and not from xxx@gmail.com

In the Gmail web interface, I have it set up so when I send an email through the web interface, the recipient sees it as from xxx@yyy.com. Using the actual Gmail app it actually must tie in and works fine this way. But when sending from the native iPhone app, it always comes from xxx@gmail.com.

I've messed around with SMTP settings and so on, but just can't figure this out.

I'd like to use the gmail app but on the iPad you can't hide the inbox on the left. This is especially irritating in portrait mode because it leaves very little room for the actual email itself.

Another vote for Mailbox app. Every improvement I have thought of they have done. Landscape support, check, use of alias domain name email, check (which I think handles it better than the the gmail app which says sent from myemail@gmail.com on behalf of me@domain.com whereas Mailbox makes it look like it comes from alias). Also let's you make folders, make the email go but come back later like a snooze or send to teaks or done, with swipes.

Finally with iOS 7 you get your mail instantly (before the notification would say no mail but then when you opened the app it would then fetch from server). Would love to know how iOS 7 made that possible. Try it it's free after all :)

I think any email apps other than the built in one are just annoying.
I'm expecting an iPhone 5S and I'm really going to HATE not having push gmail.

Push works nice with @outlook.com, just forward your gmails to outlook.com. It is working perfectly.

What about composing new messages on iPhone - does outlook have a send as / from gmail option?

I tried forwarding to iCloud but all new mail went from my iCloud address - I could opt to reply using gmail SMTP but new mails went as my iCloud address which isn't what i want. I could setup a gmail manual account but it duplicates messages and downloads messages twice.

Yes just add gmail account as default sending account under outlook settings.
