If you don't need push notifications, Mailbox is great. Superior app IMO.

I need 'em for work purposes (it's kinda important for me to respond quickly even if I'm mobile) and I hate sapping battery by setting it to poll every few minutes. So Gmail it is.

Gmail App Notification Sounds

In the iOS Mail app notification setting, you can change the incoming mail vibration and sound. I have a different sound for VIP list emails and the default for all my other emails.
You can view your emails in separate inboxes or a universal inbox.

This is actually different from what I'm asking. I have set my iOS Mail as one sound, and my Gmail app as another. When I get Gmail notifications through my Gmail app it plays the iOS sound. I'm talking about the Gmail app, not the different inboxes in the Mail app. Perhaps that's where the problem lies? Should I not have Gmail configured in Mail? I do need it for my contacts, however...

I've been using both and I'm happiest this way.

iOS Mail app if I nede to be quick about replying to something/writing something (hate waiting for gmail to load).

Gmail app if I need to search for something or want to organize my mail.

Gmail app for notifications.

So how do you set your Gmail notifications? Mine are set to one ring tone but using the one from my Mail app.

I think you should have only 1 setup. Either the mail app or the gmail app. I personally like the mail app. I don't know much about the gmail app bUt with the mail app you can choose which sound plays from your iOS ringtones/sounds.

I use iOS Mail. It's bad enough that I have to use Push for my work email. I definitely don't need my personal Gmail messages notifying me the instant they arrive.

I'm having the same issue. I'm using the Gmail app, and have set the sound to be one thing, but I'm getting the "messages" sound instead as set up in Settings. I like the Gmail app just fine, and want to keep it separate from my Exchange account (so I can tell when I'm getting work emails vs. personal ones). Any way to do this?

iPhone 5S ios 7

Are you saying that the Gmail app is making the same sound as the iOS mail app? The sound is supposed to be different and unless I'm mistaken it's not customizable.

Actually Sparrow..... I have other e-mail accounts that dump into it . I rather check one app than 2 different apps for e-mail.

Same here. I have three email accounts and they are all using the IOS7 Mail app. Could not deal with having to using multiple email clients.

Yes. I have it set to be one sound, and it uses the Mail sound instead. it is customizeable.

Out of curiosity, where is the setting for customizing the Gmail app sound located? I can't find it. I didn't think it was customizable.

Sorry, I can't find it. I was able to do it but I'm new to the iPhone so I can't find it yet (been an Android user for years).

I guess I should confess that since that was first posted, I have dumped Sparrow and gone back to the iOS7 Mail app. I like using the iOS Mail app on my iPad mini and it isn't as annoying anymore on my iPhone. Sparrow, since being bought by Google, probably will never put out an iPad app :(

Settings
Notification Center
Mail
Select Gmail
Alert Sound

I set my sound here, but it plays a random stock sound that I can't change anywhere. I get the same sound for my work email as my personal email. Very annoying! What's the point of setting a sound if it doesn't work? Anyone?

I was under the impression that you were looking to change the sound in the Gmail app. This setting will not affect the sound made by the Gmail app. It is not customizable. This setting is for the default email app. It will let you set sounds specific to each email account you have set up in it. Previously, were you talking about the sound produced by the Gmail app or by the default mail app?

I don't care where the sound change comes from, I just want to know how to do it. Right now I have it set so that sounds are on in Mail for Gmail, that the sound is the one that I want, and that sounds are off in the Gmail app. When I have the sound off in my Gmail app no sound plays; when I have it on it plays a the sound set in Mail (Settings/Sounds/New Mail). Neither of them play the actual sound I have set in Settings/Mail/Gmail/Alert Sound.

What are you talking about? Mailbox supports push notifications.

Are you trying to use that setting to change the sound from the Gmail app or the sound when you get an email from a Gmail account using the mail app? That setting only applies to the latter. As far as I know the only way you can customize the Gmail sound without being jailbroken is to access your Gmail through the mail app. You lose push that way though. If you were jailbroken there a couple of different ways. Of course, that's not an option currently with iOS 7.

Yes it does. I am using the mailbox app and it never fails to notify me the instant a new email comes in.

On iOS? I don't think so because uh... Google explicitly removed the functionality from GMail that does this.

In fact, it's not even an option any more if you go into Settings -> Mail -> Fetch New Data:

Gmail removed push for exchange, but the mailbox app (not to be confused with the stock mail app) still supports push notifications. It had also just been updated to support iCloud and yahoo mail as well, which strictly makes it superior to the gmail app, even if you don't use the swipe functions.
