Wow. Just because someone is a server at a restaurant doesn't mean he or she is broke.

I suppose. But if he can afford to blow $700 on this, maybe I'm tipping too much.

And if he's buying this at the expense of food, essentials, or retirement, I'm hard pressed to feel any pity at all. I'm on a 5 to 7 year tech cycle so I can avoid debt and sock money into savings.

I'm wondering how many people with $10-17K to drop on a gold smartwatch, are used to going to the shopping malls where many Apple stores are.

Although they did say that only certain stores would carry the Edition. It'll be interesting to see which ones / types they pick.

They can avoid the shopping mall and go to stores with actual street addresses; they're there in most of the big cities, where on average more of the people actually buying such a watch actually live.

Insider information: The employees selling the Edition are Experts - they are a step above your regular Specialists in store. Think "Genius" for sales - these people know how to talk to customers and sell to meet quotas. Regular sales specialists are not allowed to sell the Edition.

Also, the training basically covers how to talk to a customer. Since all the models of Apple Watch do the same thing - the only difference is a persons personal style.

This is 100% true! I am not a server but I have dined in restaurants where I have left ~$50-$100 for a tip. Now if that waiter/waitress was waiting on another table or two they could be making some good money.

I think it's very rude for people here to assume that a waiter or waitress could not afford something like this (this isn't aimed at you jrswizzle you are only quoted for the first half of my rant ;) ). My mother has been a career waitress and can pull in a couple hundred dollars per day.

Way to be judgmental...

congrats.. she will be able to afford a Apple Watch Edition in.... about 90 days if she doesn't eat or pay taxes. ;)

Let's do some simple math:

5 days a week x 52 weeks a year = $385 a day to make 100k

That's really hard to imagine that you work somewhere that the clientele is spending that kind of cash that many days of the week.

Even the 400 a day on the weekends is only 40k if you worked every weekend for a year straight.

if I see my waiter wearing a 17000 dollar watch, I might not tip as much, considering they are probably swimming in cash already

I've always wondered about that joke. I don't know how to make an arse out of someone else. I could only do that with myself.

That goes back to when Felix Unger said it to Oscar Madison back in the 70's, when I was 8.

He didn't say that to Oscar. He said it to the girl who was going to buy a theatre ticket from him. She assumed that he wanted more than face value. This was in a courtroom setting with her on the stand:D

Having read a lot of comments here I have to say this is the most bizarre thread I've seen at this site..

I see a lot of nastiness and a lot of pettiness regarding people they know nothing about.

5 to 7 yeah tech cycle? What are you running a Commodore 64? Haha.

Hello Andriod. I used to swear by Apple. Not after this crap. Talk about a company that's out of touch with its customers. They better offer a great experience for people willing to pay more than ten grand for the watch because those of us with a brain will not only take a pass on the product and pricing but are laughing hysterically that they would attempt such a move in the first place.

We give you 30 minutes and then you have to tell us if you are going to give us $17,000!

I think Tiffany would give you more than 30 minutes.

I spent an hour when buying my first macbook. I wouldn't leave until I knew how to use the basics - web, mail, music, pages, keynote, etc..

What's stopping just anybody from making a Special Purchasing Experience appointment?
Exactly! I see lawsuit opportunity here if they deny you because they feel you are a broke ***. Haha...

I don't like the Apple Watch Edition and I'm a luxury watch collector.

That being said, "better watches out there"? A watch is a jewel, a jewel is basically the conjunction of subjective attributes. Better at what? I don't think you can label something like a watch as "better than" other. Just can be more prestigious, have a more timeless design in your culture, more perceived quality, but apart from that, which are again subjective attributes, you can't say any other thing.

Is a PP Nautilus chronograph better than a Casio F91W? Why?
I tell you what even if you don't like it I have no doubt this thing will hold its value. The gold alone will always be worth something also.

Yup, for us up in Canada ...servers, don't forget to pay 30-35% tax on your tips. I know that I pay close to 37% on my income.

All the severs I know all have $500 boots, $700 winter coats, MacBooks, and a lively night life...because they 'overlook' claiming their tips as income. So their dollar has roughly 50% more buying power than mine...

Good for them, I would do the same! Met plenty of Canadians in my travels and they all say they have good healthcare but taxes suck!

I have this feeling that Apple will drop the gold Apple watch in a year or two. I know Apple wants to be viewed as a premium, upscale brand, but I don't see Apple putting up with this BS for too long. It's not in Apple's DNA, at least not the Apple DNA most of us know.

You know multiple servers that make a little less than $500 a day serving food?? Get your BS outta here.

I tell ya get me a job like this. I'll server anything on a platter at this rate!

$10,000 and you get only 15 minutes extra? I thought an apple store employee will visit the rich person's house, give a manicure, paint their nails gold and help you put on the Apple Edition, sing the Trinidad James song ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LOZhaxTw0I ) and reluctantly leave your company.

Ah.. ok.. that is for the $17000 tier... Got it!

Haha this is too funny! Yeah for that kind of money they better be serving Champagne and Caviar! Only Apple can get away with this kinda stuff and I'm willing to bet they will do pretty well with the 10k plus watches. All the rich people, starts and Politicians will get one. Even the Presidents of Cuba, Venezuela, Russia and North Korea will want to get their hands on one!

"Mr. Apple" himself, Woz, says this will fail.
He didn't say that about iPod.
He didn't say that about iPhone.
He didn't say that about iPad.
He is, however, saying it about AppleWatch.
I think that bears noting.
Could Woz be wrong? Sure he could. But I don't think he is ....
$18,000 for a $400 watch with $1500 worth of gold in it.
Jesus Christ ....

I see your Woz and I go with Jobs' appointed successor and Jony Ive.

*shrug*

That'll be fun. I guess they're not going for the elite market then. The elite don't go to stores to buy jewelry, they have people that bring it to them.

Glad you answered your own "question"... Here in Toronto the main Apple Store isn't far away from several Jewellers and higher end watch stores.

Everything I want to type as a response to this nonsense is against Macrumors policy.
I agree. It's basically MR Policy Club.

The 1st rule of the MR Policy Club is you don't talk about the MR Policy Club.

Not sure why people are so upset. I think all Apple is trying to push is that employees are able to look at a customer and recommend a certain band. That's it. Not sure what the big deal is.

Isn't it insulting the long-standing Apple customer by suggesting they're clueless about what they want? Is that really the typical Apple customer?

I ask you: Is anyone here going to drop anything between $350 an $1100 without knowing exactly what they want? Or are we all just impressionable airheads?

That's the vibe Apple is sending here.

Reading the posts on this thread reminds me of watching a car accident- you really don't WANT to watch, but you can't help yourself! I haven't read this many interesting posts on a single thread in a long time.
I have no idea whether the :apple:Watch will be a success. I only know I won't be buying one. It doesn't solve any tech issue I have.
Having said that, I have a suggestion for a slogan for those who DO schedule the 30 minute appointments:
"YOU pick your watch, WE :apple: pick your pocket"

Apple you have failed!

Apple failed to make us desire the Apple Watch Edition by the lack of involving specifically the Edition in the presentation, giving some simple hype and making us want to buy the Edition wether or not we can't or can afford it. By unveiling the Edition in a more prestigious manner it would everyone want it and those who couldn't afford it would dream of it! Apple you've failed us, for the first time in a long time I can personally say, you did not make me feel like I needed the Edition.

Because it's simply in gold? There's no difference other than the materials, precious metals used but the problem is after you changed and modified how the gold is created it is no longer true 18k gold. For example bring this Apple Watch Edition to a pawn shop in 5 years from now once it's obsolete and they will not offer you its weight in gold since the gold is not pure 18k but a custom refinement of different metals changing the way all 18k is created. You would be luck to get half the gold value as a pawn shop bases the offering value on melting the gold as scraps... Custom gold items such as rings, bracelets and chains rarely hold any resale value and in most cases are sold for scrap, melted and re-crafted into a desired piece. Luxury wrist watches on the other hand are never sold for scrap since they hold their value and are highly collectable but in this case the Apple Watch Edition could not possibly hold much value as in 5 to 10 years from now it will be discontinued, obsolete and Apple might no longer support the current operating system which leaves the watch purely as a collectors item and not a functional, up to date wrist watch but merely a useless and worthless piece of old technology. We clearly know that technology quickly becomes out dated and the same will go for the Apple Watch... It's trademark name might be Watch but should we even consider it a watch. This would be the first time in all timekeeping history a wrist watch of such high value would decrease in value so rapidly and become out dated. Has a Rolex, Patek Philippe, Omega or Vacheron Constantin ever been out dated? No, because these are true wrist watches and not some electronic gadget most wrists watch enthusiast who have the money to buy Apple Watch Edition would even consider a true time keeping piece.

With that said Apple really should have given us more for our money. Fine if you don't want to use pure 18k gold, if you don't want to give us a solid 18k gold bracelet and if you don't want to give us a diamond bezel you need to bring something special to the table which is very obvious to those who know a little something about the luxury wrist watch world.

Simply telling us the Apple Watch Edition is limited in quantity is the most obscene statement and this scares even those with disposable money from buying it from the start. First impressions are everything right? From the start the Apple Watch Edition should have been presented in its own limited edition presentation box. The watch itself should have been numbered directly on the back of the case. At a price tag of $10,000 plus each Apple Watch Edition should have been physically numbered which would actually help keep each watches value in place and locked in time, no pun intended. Also offered should have been a gold charger which has yet to be seen which in my opinion probably won't be a reality and if it is... Apple failed to properly present the product.

I absolutely hate using the words Apple and failed together but this is how I truly feel. Would these same mistakes have happened if Steve was with us today? I don't doubt he's looking down at us thinking even just a little of what I'm saying has some sense. Make us WANT IT, MAKE US DESIRE IT, MAKE US LUST FOR IT! Apple called it Edition for no other reason than it has SOME gold. Not because you get a luxury case, not because it comes with a gold bracelet, not because it's physically numbered, not because if you own one you have access to and exclusive version of the Watch Edition application.

Apple why have you failed me? Failed us? I have $20,000 in the bank reserved for my Edition but you failed making me WANT IT.
