i don't think apple does, it's the resellers. i know this was happening in russia during the times of the 5s, and as there aren't any official apple stores in russia, i'm assuming it wasn't apple's doing. :)
Important clarification. We do not have physical Apple stores here either. Premium resellers used to charge premiums of 300+€ for phones a few years back

The gold phone is manufactured using a different process, that isn’t to say that it’s better, or that the outcome would be better for other colors.
The problem is that this different process is thought to end up in making the phone more resistant and that is my concern:
Panzarino said the new coating is also "more durable" than the one applied to other iPhone 12 Pro finishes, suggesting that the Gold version of the device could be at least slightly less susceptible to scratches, nicks, or other wear and tear.
Now having the unit in hand, it does seem quite fragile to me, at least comparing to the iPhone 7 I come from. I'm used to Apple's aluminum but I do not know what to expect with this, and thus I ended up buying a clear Magsafe case after getting the phone (and I hate cases)

yes, i don't believe apple ever charged more :)

The gold looks pimp! I sometimes regret getting Pacific Blue...but I'm happy with it. It's in a case most of the time anyway.

I am struggling between two colors: GOLD and GRAPHITE;

Golds looks so rich and premium, especially with black face glass and dark cases.
Graphite looks clean and concervatively business mannered. what would you choose?

I had the blue pro max for 2 weeks while my wife had a silver. I just returned mine for the gold.
last year, when the pro came out, I had the gold for 2 weeks before switching to the blue pro max.
the gold just looks more premium over the blue, IMO.
