So what I'm hearing is that Apple cheaped out on providing proper protective coatings for the majority of these phones?
Why doesn’t that surprise me, what you have manufactured in your head, about “proper” protective coatings 🤣 🙄

What I heard was that Apple was able to pioneer a new technique for depositing the gold finish, which will make it more durable and less susceptible to showing fingerprints.

Will the new process ever come to the other colors? Who knows? But having one new and improved finish doesn’t make all other finishes “improper”; that’s ridiculous isn’t it. And for all you know the new process is not only better, but less expensive.

So much for what you “heard”.

In the real world (vs the fake world of tech reviewers) does anyone EVER look at the edges of a smartphone ever? Like ever in your whole life?

Doubtful - except when taking it out of the box for the first time.

Verdict: Fake review
I do? I never use cases I like using the phone and feeling the phone. But hey you can think nobody cares about the edges? Smudges don’t bother me much though.

Well if you’re getting the silver then it’s raw from the way it looks like previous years. Every other color has the coating over the stainless steel so you can’t polish the ones that have the coating.
Okay yeah I know but the guy I quoted said that isn’t the case. Lmao.

I have 11 pro max and polished it with no problem.

I keep seeing people say this but has it been confirmed that the silver is raw this year? When it was introduced it sounded like *all* the finishes have PVD coating + magnetron whatever on the gold.

im dying to know if silver is raw this year.. when I google PVD coating it kind of sounds like it what makes the colored ones colors.... I’m hoping silver is raw. Cape Cod Polish is amazing And being able to fix phone ourselves of micro scratches is an awesome option... hoping theres no PVD coating on silver

Polished what? There's no exposed stainless just glass.

Poster is referring to the surgical grade stainless steel on the silver models of iphones x to 11 pro, which were simply polished stainless steel that a person can polish themselves to buff out scuffs and scratches. Makes the device look brand new and is unique to the silver colours as they have the pure stainless steel edges

I just sold a silver iPhone x and polished it...went from scuffed up and dulled stainless steel to pristine as it looks brand new and the micro scratches can be buffed out. Can do this with pure stainless steel products, but the concern is if the silver model this year has a PVD coating (it does look extra shiny) vs the pure stainless steel like iPhone x/xs/11 pro all were.

If it has a pvd coating, it would help with micro scratch resistance and be superior to the raw stainless steel of the past specifically in that regard but, but it would also prevent from properly polishing, which many people enjoyed of that colour option. Polishing can buff out the micro scratches as well so it isn't really a trade off

To those commenting on the coating: The previous PVD (physical vapor deposition) process, although still a good process for thin film coating and colors, was replaced with this new type of PVD coating...the processes occur in the same vacuum coating environment. The difference is the use of High Impulse Power (high impulsing of ions) of the power supply that provides a higher density film product that is not achievable with traditional power supplies. This is a game changer that will undoubtedly migrate to other applications...screens, other colors, etc.

So..I have both a Gold and a Pacific Blue iphone12Pro on order. I stopped by a Best Buy today..(the only place I found them on display) and held and played with a gold one. While it thankfully did not look like a 1970's Delta brass faucet, it did look nice, I determined that it was just not my first choice. I canceled my Gold order and still have the blue one coming.....hopefully any day, as it says "preparing to ship". I will use a clear case anyway, so I'm good with my choice.

what didn’t you like about the gold?

Well, the first thing I noticed was all the smudges and fingerprints on it, which I suppose is to be expected on all of them. The back was like a cream color and somewhat bland. It is not that I did not like it as much as it did not overly impress me. I think I will like the blue better. This world would be horrible if we were all exactly alike, so I would not fault anyone who really liked the Gold over the Blue....Honestly, I am going to be more excited to finally be able to use my new iwatch6 w/cellular, once my new phone comes in and I have a phone that works with the new watch. Going from an old iphone6+ to this new one I think I will notice a difference.

I like to see the 12 mini in gold

Keep in mind that the Pro Max is more "pro" than the Pro, due to camera differences. So I guess that makes the Gold Pro Max the Pro to rule them all!
Yes, but that's a different story (and a whole another can of worms, but it is what it is - more space, more hardware)

well, it is gold...
in some countries they even cost more :)
Interesting, so they did start charging more for colors on the iPhone after all? 😅

It's just the manufacturing process, you know.
Yes, so I've read. Rather unpleasing to see not all phones had the same treatment when I have a non gold one being shipped to me as I type, tho.

i don't think apple does, it's the resellers. i know this was happening in russia during the times of the 5s, and as there aren't any official apple stores in russia, i'm assuming it wasn't apple's doing. :)

The gold phone is manufactured using a different process, that isn’t to say that it’s better, or that the outcome would be better for other colors.
