Well, after several years of Apple laptop ownership, we are going back to Windows on our next laptop. We converted during the "Hi I'm a PC" ads, and loved how the Mac truly just worked. But now, after it seems Apple has overextended OS X with features and neglected the everyday cleanup up of code, we can no longer justify the premium price. Our laptops hang, apps stop running, the iMac, Air, and Mini frequently bomb overnight, iTunes sync is a mess, the gray screen of death is becoming more common, and the spinning beachball is a common occurrence. Even my friends are saying that they "aren't as happy with Apple as we used to be." So, do I spend $1,800 on the next MBA, or do I spend $850 on a souped-up Windows PC? I can buy two of those in four years and still come out ahead. I hope that Apple is again worth the price someday.

See ya! This coming from an individual who has a MacBook Pro with Retina Display 13", iPad Air 2, iPhone 6 Plus, iPod nano, Apple TV and Time Capsule. Also from the individual who has a $600 Apple Store gift card ready for my stainless steel Apple Watch and waiting for the 12 inch MacBook.

Windows 10 looks great, but for $850, you are getting what you pay for. Sorry. I had a problem with my iPhone 6 Plus would click too loud for my liking a month after I bought it, they replaced it with a brand new one for me for free. I won't find that elsewhere.

Cheers.

Lol, never thought about putting an Apple Store gift card on standby. Might as well file my taxes now and spend the return on a gift card.

Yeah, I thought it was a good idea haha. It feels less painful later when I have to pay less (I know it's the same amount but psychologically it feels more palpable).

Just to 2nd your point. OS X has progressively been less smooth and yes us longtimers have plenty of reference points.
In my case, I've been a Unix pro (good old Berkeley 4.3) since 1986 and a Mac user since 1985. I saw Apple's ups & downs & ups again. I was overjoyed when Steve decided to move dated OS9 to OS X with a Unix Kernel.
The stability of the overall OS has been largely due yo its UNIX core, but as years progressed Featuritis has crept in and now hardware designers are running the software side. Never a good idea... kinda like the old joke... how many software guys does it take to change a light bulb...

anywho, Mavericks is it for me. Yosemite's flatness is an eye-sore even if they'll eventually fix the bugs. It's just getting too bloated.

Can you explain bloated, as regards Mavericks to Yosemite.

Don't worry he'll be back. Shall we start up a pool on the time frame? 6 months? 1 year? I guess I'll have to build a spreadsheet matrix with timeframes as the x axis and which Mac he decides to purchase upon returning as the y axis. That would give us a lot of blocks to purchase.

Yep, I used to be this enthusiastic about Apple too. Those were the good ol' days. I wish I could find a compelling reason to feel that enthusiasm again. I have the iPad Air 2 and the 6 Plus and will be sticking with those despite the glitches (I have invested a lot in the ecosystem). And with Windows, yes, you get what you pay for. With Apple these days, you DON'T get what you pay for. That's the problem.

I've long held the belief that you choose the best tool for the job and not be married to the logo. For years it was Apple because of the great designs, great components, and solid OS. I can't say that unequivocally today because of the issues with dGPUs on the MBPs and Yosemite having its issues.

I still prefer OS X over windows, but that doesn't mean I'm going to choose one product just because it has a fruit logo.

Exactly! Bravo!

I have similar issues with TM on different Macs and I am forced to format and create new backups from scratch about twice a year,

You can fix corrupt Time Machine backups pretty easily with some terminal commands.

I have a ton of friends that have left Apple products and returned to PC computers and android phones; and I always wish them the best. I just bought a 2014 MBA and compared to the first MBA I owned in 2008, this new MBA is everything the 2008 MBA was not. My wife has a Dell maxed out PC and gets a new one each year (work PC); this year's model doesn't have things like a VGA port amongst others. Allowing her to shop for new adapters for different devices...Again, Godspeed!

I'm thinking along the same lines as the OP. Yosemite has a number of issues, particularly with networking.

Hardware wise Apple is just not competitive at the moment, certainly compared to the Dell XPS 2015 - now that's is a crazy-great machine. I'd love to see a 13 inch Air with 5mm bezel similar to the XPS 13.

I'll wait a few months when hopefully a) Yosemite's problems will get ironed out & b) Apple release competitive hardware.

It's 99% the same or better except for the screen. Curious that you would call it "not competitive" for that one reason.

1. Much better screen
2. Much smaller footprint
3. Latest Broadwell processors+chipset

So aside from display, footprint and processor you're probably correct.

Edit:

The 13 inch XPS has effectively shrunk in size to be comparable with the 11 inch Macbook Air. Apple did much the same thing with with the introduction of the original Air and created a whole new product category in the process. It could be argued that the Air's Raison d'être is entirely to do with mobility weight and portability, yet side by side with the XPS the current Air looks clumsy and awkward.

One negative is that compared to the 13 inch Air the XPS has poorer battery life, but I guess for battery life it should really be compared to something with the same footprint, like the 11 inch Air.

This is why people make fun of the apple fans.

They're main reason for saying the MBP is so good is it's a "clean windows". A fresh install without the bloatware PC vendors are installing.

Well, when you take a mac out of the box to run windows, you have to install windows. To be fair, take the PC out of the box, wipe the drive and install a clean windows.

Either compare fresh out of the box to fresh out of the box (in which case Dell gives you a much cleaner windows than Apple), or take the machine out of the box and install a clean windows (in which case both machines will have a clean fresh windows and the whole point of the article goes out the window).

I have a 2011 air and it hasn't run its course anywhere near completely yet, but I'm wondering what my next machine will be.

if there is a 12" rMBA, I may consider it. a retina macbook air seems perfect but not in the current state of Yosemite, being >Yosemite and not downgrade able (my air is staying on mavericks after giving yosemite a beta and GM whirl and hearing its still junk) and I dunno if I want a smaller size than what I got.

high resolution seems inevitable and imperative to be a true "upgrade," from my current machine but the weight gain of 13" rMBP is unappealing. 15" rMBP seems tempting but I think I was happy as heck going 15" uMBP to 13" uMBP in its time after loving 15" cMBP (13" cMB were junk to me). Maybe some kind of retina 15" from mid 2014 so it can load Mavericks but I don't like the idea of spending so much money to be on legacy software. It's crazy you gotta stay put to not deal with more headaches.

Man thats a lot of abbreviations

If anyone has recommendations in the PC market (I haven't kept up in forever, but the lesser price is appealing) or even their mac anecdote from someone who is really picky would appreciate it!

I just got one of the Dell XPS 13's with the touch screen. Its a great machine if you're looking for suggestions. Meanwhile, since updating to 10.10.2 my other half is dealing with having to toggle wifi every time she uses her MacBook pro.

At least I can take a modicum of comfort in knowing I'm not the only one who has to toggle wifi just to stay connected. Crazy since rock-solid wifi and bluetooth were some of the things that attracted me to the mac in the first place.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. If I was having problems of that kind, I'm sure I'd take pause too. My experience is more flawless than ever after all these years, I have to say; app quality, speed, performance, all that.

Well; good luck, if you're sure.

No problems here with Mavericks on a late 2010 MacBook Air. Sometimes I wonder where all these gremlins others incur hide from me.

lol. I use Win 7 at work with fewer problems than OS X. That is the problem. Won't be using Win 8 (thankfully). Bad sign when Win 7 is less frustrating that OS X.

My son just bought himself an Alienware laptop...

Well, it's true that OSX became worse after Snow Leopard, and despite having improved in Mavericks and Yosemite it still has bugs that shouldn't exist in a OS nowadays. But let's be fair, Windows isn't more stable than OSX, and if it is to you, there's something wrong with your Air.

I had a Win7 Vaio with almost the same processor as my MBP 13" 2010 (a C2D), and it was a pain in the ass. That was when I switched to Mac after 14 years using Windows. I've recently installed Win7 in bootcamp on my Mac to do some Matlab and FPGA programming, and it has crashed more times in 1 month than my OSX in 1 year. Not to say that I'm in Yosemite working quite good despite using it in a 5 years old MBP (basic one, only SSD upgraded).

And of course your son prefers an Alienware, as it fits much better for gaming than a Macbook Air.

My post was tongue-in-cheek.

...

2. Not smaller vs. the 11" Air.
3. No huge practical difference between Haswell and Broadwell

So again, other than the screen, meh.

I like Yosemite (on retina) a hell of a lot more than Win 8.1. While Windows 7 is my preference for the desktop, the time I've spent on Win 10 has impressed me. I don't see any laptops out there that give me the user experience far better than the rMBP does. It's a joy to do work on. The new Dell XPS, while looks nice, is still fairly expensive.

Windows 8.1 is horrible, you can tell me how pleased with how stable it is all day long but it is NOT enjoyable to do work on. It's so bad even Microsoft knows this and has done a great job bumping up the release date for Win 10. Blows my mind that people are sitting here saying Win 8.1 is awesome when the developer themselves realizes it was not a great product.
