I can understand his let down. I would have felt the same way had I waited, which I did not. I wouldn't buy the new iMac either - it simply wouldn't serve my needs.

Not this **** again, another windows zealot that never had any intention on buying a Mac machine and feels the need to come on here and tell everyone about a machine with 2x specs and half the cost of an iMac. So original and never heard of.

how did you build one for half the price? an decent i7 ivy bridge setup would cost you around $1200 without a monitor. 27" ips is around the $800 range.

so sick and tired of people claiming windows PCs to be half the price.

You must be joking, you don't need to invest $1200 on a decent Ivy-Bridge setup.. You could literally build a great Ivy-Bridge setup for $700-800..

Infact just last year I built myself a Hackintosh for $600 the tower alone.. Overlocked my 2500K to 4.4GHz, Radeon 5850 1GB, 120GB SSD, 550W PSU..

Spent $200 on a Dell IPS monitor while it was on sale..

I am pretty sure that you do not have to check back. There still will not be a DVD burner in 3 years.

Agreed DVD's are in their sunset and a few years form now while have a tiny corner of one shelf in office supply stores.

Wow, let me count the fallacies:
1) Comparing a mobile i7 in the Mini to the desktop i5 in the iMac
2) Comparing Intel integrated graphics in the Mini to discrete Nvidia graphics in the iMac
3) Asserting that the # of threads is the sole determining factor of the speed of a system

Did I miss anything?

The low Mini is a casual machine. The top Mini is a numbers cruncher. To compare them to an iMac is to compare a Jeep to a helicopter.. ok sure, they both can get you from point A to point B, but the situations where one is preferred over the other are very different.

You missed that he's saying a mobile 2.3GHz i7 is twice as fast as a desktop 3.2GHz i5.

Yes, the hyperthreading counts for something but it does not bridge that gap... let alone make the mobile twice as fast.

I think it's pretty obvious Apple is getting out of the desktop business. You might be gone for a very, very, very long time.

How does releasing a redesigned iMac with massive performance increases and new technologies make you think apple are getting out of the desktop business?

Are you being sarcastic? What did you expect it to do? Tap dance?

I know I don't miss the rat nest of cables from my old desktop pc

What cables? Obviously, there is one to the monitor and a dongle for wireless keyboard/mouse. Is that a "rat nest"? Sorry, I have never seen it...

Could you please define "massive"? Is it like 15%?

not sure if you're just using crappy parts or something that you're smoking...

$70+ for a decent case
$250-300 for CPU
$150 for a good video card
$80 for a good silent PSU
$50 for memory
$100 for 128gb ssd
$100 for HDD
$150 for a decent mobo

thats $940 already, and a 27" IPS that uses the same panel as the iMac is $799. this is 1740 total.

I hope people realize the most costly piece of component in the 27" imac is not "apple tax" but the display. It's one of the best out there for any graphic related work for color accuracy. If you don't do any work that requires a good display, then of course you're overpaying when you get an iMac. Its like getting a $400 dollar video card when you don't game.

People here are just arguing for the sake of arguing. Ivy bridge itself is about a 10-15% improvement over sandy bridge, wth did you expect? They put it in a mac and the same intel chip can perform 30% better than in a windows pc now???

ridiculous.

It's sad but true - if you go component v component you can't beat the apple. And the component config in the macs are cleverly put together. I've been struggling to put together any sort of alternative system, but I always end up seeing the value in the 27' iMac.

Just for example - any system with a $200 monitor can't enter the comparison with an iMac. Unless you are talking a comparison with Mac mini.

If you can't afford the iMac, it is still really difficult to beat the mini. I've had one for six years and still edit video on it - not without some serious delays for some tasks, but I'd never dream that a $600 PC would last this long, let alone for video editing. The $799 mini maxed out with DIY upgrades is unbeatable value at the low end.

Without being rude, if you've never owned a Mac, you've no idea where the real value is.

exactly, sure you can build a piece of crap windows PC for a bit less. But if you were going for decent components with decent reviews, the cost of all the parts is not gonna be much less than a Mac. For example, you can pay for a 20$ POS metal box or get a sturdy case with great airflow for $100.

Not true at all, you can put together a pretty fantastic i7 machine for a grand or so, and that's with a Kepler card. Apple stuff is incredibly expensive for what you get, just accept it. I think it's funny people take it personally, or get angry.

And yet, even with a 100+ dollar case, you can still save a good deal of money going with a PC. Windows is very good these days. I use all Apple products but can't stand the Apple buyer ignorance that seems to persist to this day.

Basically I look at it this way u can buy a 1987 dodge omni build it up drop a big v8 in it and smoke a Ferrari. Yet it still is a pos dodge omni that handle like junk and has no resale value. Or u spend more get the Ferrari that is plenty fast and guess what it holds a good resale. So fast omni or Ferrari ur pick

people really needs to get a clue of what they're talking about before even talking at all.

Hey OP,
Have you ever thought of a hackintosh? I was looking forward to the new iMac as well, but honestly, i am not a big fan of the new design + the limited upgradeability! I started searching the web for an alternative, and I've heard about hackintoshes! I thought what the hell, and decided to buy compatible hardware for OS X.
It runs like a charm! The full experience of OS X (dual boot windows or linux is possible), you can upgrade as you want, very powerful graphics options. I could not be happier with my decision and can only recommend it!

Have fun with that! The last time I checked they used to be very hard grant it that was 3 years ago. You have to have the exact same hardware as a mac or close enough to it or your going to have lots of problems.

It's sort of a question of your needs.

Some are willing to pay an Apple premium for the design, even though the iMac's design is really a bit dated. But it is true that the components are a good mix, and there's that screen....

Nevertheless, for people who aren't gamers, browsers, etc and need machines for work that generates money the iMacs are, well, home user computers. There are reasons why there are still far, far more Dells sitting on business desks out there.

I'm still waiting on the Mac Pros. And waiting. I DO need a computer that is user serviceable to a degree, and upgradeable. Not a desktop iPhone. Not everyone's needs are the same.

Here is from tonymacx86 Pro build
http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/search/label/CustoMac

Code:
Part Model Price
CPU i3770 3.4GHz $300.00
Motherboard	GA-Z77X-UD5H $180.00
Graphics Card	GeForce GT 640 2GB $95.00
SSD SAMSUNG 840 Pro 128GB $150.00
HDD Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM	$85.00
RAM CORSAIR 16GB DDR3 1600 $80.00
Case + PSU $150.00
It is $1,040 and needs some more stuff (WiFi, keyboard, etc.). With $800 monitor, you get around $2,000.
And, I guess, you are comparing this with the BASE 27" iMac? If you price in these options as BTO, you will get close to $3,500.
In case you didn't know, THOSE $1,500 are called "Apple tax" :)

You're not really in Apple's target market if you're not willing to pay a small premium for a better product. All I hear you saying is that it's too expensive.

I guess you must have difficulty understanding the written word.

Summary/short version (I don't mind explaining what he is saying, to you) - he's essentially complaining about the things that the iMac is missing being things that he needs. Not that it is too expensive.

Crikey, some really ignorant Apple fanboys on this thread.

Rest up those CTL-ALT-DEL muscles. You'll need them.

I have had a Mac for 3 months and in that time I have had more crashes than in the 3 years running Windows beforehand.

Just bought a iMac and I priced out windows to they are both in same ball park for price. But build quality apple for the win, almost all windows pc is plastic junk. If your going to spend big money on a machine shouldn't u spend it on quality builds not run of mill black plastic case cheap looking monitor. Oh wait it has shiny colors totally worth it for high end pc lol ya right. Enjoy your windows 8 poor design and I hope your warranty tech speaks English .

How do you say not covered under warranty in India hmmm oh well when u hear let me know.

I didn't get a quality build with my iMac. I've had to bring it in for two hardware repairs so far and now its had another failure all inside of a year of owning it. The case or appearance means nothing.

I don't understand it - are the comments about not being able to afford apple etc, made by 13 year old kids?

It's as bad as the console wars, and that's usually only done by teenagers. Are the people posting on this thread teenagers?

What a silly tread with bunch of morons.

A BTO of today's iMac has the option o 3x bigger and faster SSD, 680mx performs 2x more than the top previous gpu card in he iMac. The screen is MUCH better, sharper and less reflective, 2x the amount of ram offered. How much more improved does it have to be to be 'massive' ?

My 27" iMac freezers/crashes all the time. My 2009 macbook is so slow now, it's almost unusuable. My first generation iPad crashes constantly, and worse still, apple are not going to fix the issue. My 2010 macbook air is still going strong, and its the best laptop/machine I've ever owned, but even that crashes/freezes sometimes.

I only use my three year old windows seven box for gaming, but that runs fine and never crashes.

Personally, I find the idea of moving over the linux tempting.
