I disagree. One of Apple's greatest strengths is their ability to focus. And thermostats - or any home appliance - doesn't really fit with Apple's business strategy. (Admittedly, it would have been nice...)

But with Google buying Nest - does this mean Google will know when we're at home? Or will they / could they use that data for marketing purposes? I hope we get some clear answers to those questions.

Ah Yes...I had forgotten about that part.....

Great.

As if monitoring everyone's online activity wasn't enough, now Google has another way to monitor people in their homes... :(

Its a very good buy. Home Control with your smartphone is going to be very popular.

Google can also mine a lot of data for energy consumption if data can be uploaded.

There's probably a lot more reasons for Google buying this than meets the eye.

The only hopeful result of this would be that Google's hoping to start a standardization of all the home automation shenanigans, which is sorely needed. Not that I'm a fan of it being Googlized, but I guess somebody's gonna need to do it. Though hopefully Google+ will be dead by the time they start home automating...

Apple should've scooped up that one.

Totally agree. Apple lost some if it's top engineers and software developers to Nest (including Tony Fadell who was the father of the iPod. He left because of Forstall. But now that forstall is gone, he'd probably be glad to be back to working at Apple). Too bad.

Great, now every time I burn toast, I'll be auto-enrolled in Google+. :)

All you guys are a bunch of sore losers. IF you don't like competition then just turn of all your electronic devices and get off the Internet. Believe me Apple/MS/Google and all the other big companies are in the same bed with the same idea's. This is no surprise at all. Thanks for listening.

i don't understand how these companies, worth billions at purchase, would ever profitable by creating very expensive gadgets supposed to replace cheap products

one can find a thermostat for less than $50 and a smoke detector for $10

the potential value of geek customers would never match this amount

Seems like a good fit for Apple, but Google? Can't imagine a high percentage of Android owners buying such things.

You comments seem reasonable...but Google isn't known for making many stupid investments and losing bunches of money.

One presumes that they have some idea of what they're doing...although $3,2 BILLION does seem...ah...a bit excessive.

But then, that's why Google has lots of money, and I don't!:p :(

No Nest I do not want to watch an add to change the temperature!! Yes skip after 5 seconds!! Ahhh missed the skip, now I have to wait 30 seconds to change the temperature.

This just in: In a $13.5 trillion deal, Google has announced that it has acquired Google. The new company is to be called Googleplex, Inc.

It's all funny money. When the creators of Snapchat turn down 4 Billion you know there's a bubble going on. Yes Snapchat. That is NOT a 4 Billion dollar company when logic is applied.
