Probably wouldn't be a bad idea for Apple to also invest in home automation. That's the next big thing.

Kind of waiting to see what Apple's next step is.

Interesting that Broadcom now makes Airplay turnkey chipsets. This hasn't been covered by Apple sites but it's pretty huge news because Broadcom will deliver chipsets that do so much more than what we have now.

All you guys are a bunch of sore losers. IF you don't like competition then just turn of all your electronic devices and get off the Internet. Believe me Apple/MS/Google and all the other big companies are in the same bed with the same idea's. This is no surprise at all. Thanks for listening.

You don’t have a Google account, do you? Great services, can’t argue with the pricetag, but these days their entire focus is to force/trick everyone into using G+.

I don’t want to use G+, let me watch my YouTube videos in peace!

Google ruins everything it purchases

I own both products , Dam . I will not be a great product anymore just ok . Scott is a sellout !!!!!!!

Apple should've scooped up that one.

Why? Because you think Tim Cook is a teenage girl who needs to buy every trinket they see?
Google bought this because it gives them direct data from our homes.
I won't get rid of my Nest... actually love it.
But I won't buy any more products from them.

Google Analytics data (extended to Nest) will be available for advertisers. In a completely anonymized way of course. Only the NSA will have access unless SSL is added with a new Android PRNG. ;-)

Why does the nest 3 have a camera?

No but think about it. With the auto-away feature suddenly Google knows when you've left your home and when you've returned.

The value of Nest isn't the Thermostat or Smoke Detector. It's the data they collect and store.

I agree on the whole...want to change/adjust thermostat via smartphone, you must log into your Google+ account.

on a serious note...The one thing I can see in this acquisition is the idea of cloud/smartphone monitoring systems that was involved and how NEST was able to "adjust & learn" your habits. I can see Google putting this idea/mindset into many other items...maybe Chromecast to understand your viewing habits and be able to say, "hey, it's Monday and this show you normally watch is a repeat, how about watching THIS other show that is similar"

While i "quietly" applaud Google for their ideas in some aspects, I also DESPISE their ultra-intrusive, mainly marketing, approach to things. Sure, Apple could do similar but it seems Google uses it for advertising dollars and Apple just uses it to better things and charge more. Gmail "spies" and sells your info...iCloud doesn't care, just wants you to buy their expensive iOS devices.

Now during regular smoke detector tests, you get google ads instead of a warning sound. :D

too bad, I liked the company. but it seems that after the "apple iwatch to control home automation" google is joining that business too

You don't have to use G+. Just don't login to the G+ Page.

With the race for dominance in home automation products well in the planning stages, and the next great arena for Apple to enter into, this is great for Google, and a definite setback for my favorite Cupertino company.

Can't help but wonder if this acquisition went under the radar, cause it seems hard to believe Apple would let Google outbid them in this case.

Was never interested in Nest products and still not interested after this announcement.

No difference to what other companies do. Apple included. You don't have to use G+ to use YouTube either.

They all make you sign up in order to use a service.

I was actually looking into purchasing one recently - not a chance now!
