i don't understand how these companies, worth billions at purchase, would ever profitable by creating very expensive gadgets supposed to replace cheap products

one can find a thermostat for less than $50 and a smoke detector for $10

the potential value of geek customers would never match this amount

People have been saying this kind of thing for a long time:

i don't understand how Apple, worth billions would ever profitable by creating very expensive phones and mp3 players supposed to replace cheap ones.

one can find a nokia feature phone for less than $80 and an mp3 player for less than $50

the potential value of geek customers would never match this amount

A lot of hyperbole in this thread. One honest question of mine is: will the Nest thermostat still be sold in Apple Stores? Apple isn't a fan of Google as a company and aren't above making "emotional" responses to news like this.

RIP iOS compatibility

Nah, Google builds better iOS apps than Android apps. They won't give up their majority market.

However, I'd be a little worried about Google now knowing every detail about my energy usage for heating and cooling.... as well as when I'm home or "away."

You don't have to use G+. Just don't login to the G+ Page.

And every time you use the app to remotely control your home automation, you would be prompted to log in to G+. They do this with all of their other services. It’s obnoxious.

wow

This has to be on the surface one of the most overpriced acquisitions ever! They only have two relatively niche products and they are paying 3.5bn cash. Thats crazy.

How exactly is this company worth $3B?

Google is out for total domination. Amazing how many people seem to be A OK with it.

A Nest of the future...

One day soon there will be a Nest in your fridge. It will know when your milk is getting low, that you have only four juice boxes left, and that there's only one egg left. Based on preferences you've set, Google Groceries knows to send you more milk, juice boxes, and eggs. Another Nest detects when you arrive home. It sends you a text informing you that a drone shipment of groceries will arrive at your door in 10 minutes. You have three minutes to respond with any other groceries you'd like added to your order.

I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords.

crazy level

We have not yet approach the crazy level of insanity.

Time Warner purchased of AOL for $60 billion was and still is the height of insanity.

No difference to what other companies do. Apple included. You don't have to use G+ to use YouTube either.

They all make you sign up in order to use a service.

YouTube is not G+. If I wanted the services provided by G+, it would make perfect sense to make me use G+. But I want the services provided by YouTube, and I can use those services without being signed into G+. So why, after opting out of that integration, do they keep prompting me to sign in?

No hate for Nest - but isn't all they did a Thermostat and a freaking smoke protector.

Who in the world is that worth 3 billon? yes, billion...

Its absurd to claim that Google's "majority market" is iOS users. Its obviously Android, I don't even need to bring in numbers here because its so plainly obvious.

We had the tech bubble and the home bubble. This will be the Home Tech bubble.

If you sign into g+ and use YouTube you'll get more functionality.

Have you tried asking Google regarding your last point?

This is fantastic news. I was just researching Nest to see if I would want to buy one. Now I definitely will.

You comments seem reasonable...but Google isn't known for making many stupid investments and losing bunches of money.

One presumes that they have some idea of what they're doing...although $3,2 BILLION does seem...ah...a bit excessive.

But then, that's why Google has lots of money, and I don't!:p :(

i remember google was very upset after losing a bunch of patents up for auction because they were ridiculously bidding e-billion, pi-billion dollars (mathematical constants x a certain value) etc. they thought it would be clever having the auctioners calculate their bids every time they put one forth but the auctioners didn't have any of that and they were dismissed.
