One day soon there will be a Nest in your fridge. It will know when your milk is getting low, that you have only four juice boxes left, and that there's only one egg left. Based on preferences you've set, Google Groceries knows to send you more milk, juice boxes, and eggs. Another Nest detects when you arrive home. It sends you a text informing you that a drone shipment of groceries will arrive at your door in 10 minutes. You have three minutes to respond with any other groceries you'd like added to your order.

I, for one, welcome our new Google overlords.

While I love your Simpsons reference and read this is mainly tongue in cheek, isn't this the sci-fi stuff we all looked forward to?

How long till the EPA has access to home energy consumption records and you end up on the "green" bad list?

Big miss for Apple.

Why? Beacause home automation is supposedly the new big thing, like wearables? Or because Tony Fadell used to work at Apple? I could maybe agree if Google got it for cheap, but $3B? Seems ridiculous. Just because Apple is swimming in cash doesn't mean they should overpay for some company that has a "cool" product right now.

Damn Shame...

...I was very interested in getting the smoke sector. I thought it was a very nicely designed home appliance.

Will abstain now. I guess they have the moola to make a big purchase like this one. Will doubt that a return on that is achievable anytime in the next 3-5 years, but let's see what happens. Such a shame it's become another family member but great news for Tony F and their team.

3.2 billion for a small company that makes niche accessories? Nest would have to sell about 15 million thermostats to make that much revenue at $250 and likely 2x to make that much profit. This purchase may pay off... In a decade or two.

Right and people lament why $AAPL is where it is... future potential earnings.

Well, that's ends MY interest in ever buying any of these. If Google's involved, I'm gone. They're trying their best to own us all. Well, not me!

I am in the same boat. Just in the last few days I have thought about the thermostat. Was very sad to see this as I really wanted one. Not now.

Nothing can convince me a smoke detector is worth $129.
Seriously if I bought one I would be embarrassed to explain to people why I paid 129 for a smoke detector.

Seriously though, I'm just surprised Nest was worth that much. Who here would have guessed it was worth more than couple hundred million? A thermostat company? Really?

You comments seem reasonable...but Google isn't known for making many stupid investments and losing bunches of money.

One presumes that they have some idea of what they're doing...although $3,2 BILLION does seem...ah...a bit excessive.

But then, that's why Google has lots of money, and I don't!:p :(

Two words: motorola mobile :DDDD

i don't understand how these companies, worth billions at purchase, would ever profitable by creating very expensive gadgets supposed to replace cheap products

one can find a thermostat for less than $50 and a smoke detector for $10

the potential value of geek customers would never match this amount

You've never user either product obviously. My Nest thermostat paid for itself in 6 moths of energy savings.

It does seem like a lot of money, but Google would have put their heads together and determined that this was worth it to them.

The question is, why is it worth that much to them? They must have plans for this internet enabled device in your homes.

A lot of tech/web companies these days are valued far above what their profits would suggest. Seems like another bubble, to be honest.

Thermostat for sale

I stopped using WAZE the day Google acquired it, I will now be looking for a thermostat alternative. Damn shame.

Bummer.

But good on Fadell, another payday. More money to buy limited edition Mac Pros/Apple products.

Plot twist: Apple allows Google buy all of these companies, then... buys Google, integrating maps and search, killing off Google+, and using its cloud services for iCloud.

Next: Apple goes after Amazon.

Stay tuned. :)

"Potential" earnings. Reminds me of Wall Streets crazy valuation of Amazon - based on potential future earnings.

3.2 billion for a company that makes smoke detectors and thermostats? what's the worth of Honeywells thermostat and smoke detector division then? 300 billion?

Don't get me wrong, I have a Nest and it's great but 3 billion?:eek::eek::eek:
