Good for Tony and gang. That's a nice return on their investment of time and money. I assume they'll have the money they need to better commercialize their products and develop other products.

The modus operandi with these types of buyouts is a mass exodus as soon as the options are actionable.

ok, now i don't have to buy a nest.

Maybe Nest has more products in the pipeline, we don't know. Nest built a network for devices and Google has now bought that network, very smart.

I do not.

I'd suggest https://duckduckgo.com for search if you want to use google's backbone, yet don't want your data to be collected. I use google, because duckduckgo's response is slower. But it's a great search engine for people who like their privacy.

Several of my linux-lunatic IT manager type of friends use that one.

That is some serious cash. Google paid. In. Cash. Crazy stuff, i'm sure Tony is laughing all the way to the bank. Why would they cash out so fast ?
They could be independent and become big player in a couple of years... But money talk I guess.

Why does nobody in here mention the fact that Google acquired Nest, not for Nest but because of Tony Fadell? They need good design, Tony Fadell = Good design. It´s that simple.

I give it 12-18 months, and Tony will be in charge of *all* product design in Google.

As for Apple, they had no need for Nest or Tony. They got the best ID team in the world with Jony & Co. But now Google also go world-class design in their house.

I love it when companies add that their companies will remain the same once a Golliath of a company acquires them.

Disclaimer for our "google regulars": Just kidding aka "this post is in jest" :)

Anyway, I love the nest thermostat, great interface and build quality and we're considering buying a few Nest protect as well. Will be interesting to see where this will be going.

The only hopeful result of this would be that Google's hoping to start a standardization of all the home automation shenanigans, which is sorely needed. Not that I'm a fan of it being Googlized, but I guess somebody's gonna need to do it. Though hopefully Google+ will be dead by the time they start home automating...

I agree somewhat - home automation is great but there are too many pieces to make a complete puzzle from different vendors.

Then again, this might be a good thing coming from a security standpoint.

If my Google account gets hacked - they can now change my temperature, lights, appliances, etc. That worries me.

Personally - I'm fine with Google buying everything and incorporating it into a single vendor. However, I want a VPN/private mode as well where not everything needs Internet. Internal networking is fine for a lot of things.

It does bring up a point...had Apple acquired Nest where would it have gone? Would Cook have created at SVP of "home automation"? Doesn't seem to fit into their functional org structure.

Google has always given support to iOS. Don't be absurd with your sensationalism.

If this was the other way around, I'd be concerned.

Which Google hardware supports iOS? Tablets? Phones? Laptops? Google TV? ChromeCast is the only exception but it expands Google ecosystem (when iOS users use ChromeCast). Thermostat is a different matter. What's Google to gain by supporting iOS? It's not like they are in a business of making money from hardware sales.

This creeps the hell out of me. No way I want Google inside my house. Major disappointment in Nest management Still considering options ... close Nest account .... sell Nest thermostats. Wow, I feel like someone has just broken in to my home ... and Nest gave 'em the key!

Nest and iOS

There is no chance they stop supporting iOS. Nest is almost entirely just a US company. Their target customer is probably much more likely to be an iOS user than an Android user. I'd guess 5 to 1 more likely.
Nest products are for folks who are not cost conscious and who like well designed products. They are targeting Apple customers with a heavily Apple based strategy. You can even see the Apple influences in the design. So they will continue to fully support iOS. This might save Android support though.

Paying $3.2 billion in cash seems incredible though.

Fadell already said that they will keep supporting iOS. And it doesn't make any sense for Google to drop support for iOS. Google wants as much data as they can get. There are many iOS users with Nest products at home.
