Google has always given support to iOS. Don't be absurd with your sensationalism.

If this was the other way around, I'd be concerned.

That's true, but only because they have to. Their long-term goal, however, is to marginalize iOS so that they won't have to support it.

This acquisition is somewhat dangerous for Apple

Fadell was one of the most important product people at Apple. He knows the creative process inside out, which is how he was able to take Nest to market so quickly. If he spills the secret sauce to Google, Apple won't be happy.

Well, that's ends MY interest in ever buying any of these. If Google's involved, I'm gone. They're trying their best to own us all. Well, not me!

I hear ya! Thank goodness Apple doesn't want to own us or monopolize anything!

What products was Fadell involved in at Apple besides iPod (and maybe iPhone early on). If he was that important, how come Steve brought in Mark Papermaster to run iPhone/iPod touch hardware engineering (which eventually went to Bob Mansfield)? Why not give that job to Fadell?

Consumer Reports did not give too good a light on Nest.

I had a base burn out on me, and reviews show other potential issues.

That why Fadell was happy??

So Consumer Reports is a good source if they say anything bad about any company except for Apple. When they criticize anything Apple they aren't a reliable source and don't know what they are talking about? At least that's the impression I've gotten here in the past. :D

Wow that's a boatload of money. Congrats to Fadell.
That said, there is something nice to see Nest as their own company, being owned by Google kind takes that away.
Either way they make great products and hopefully Google can take it a step further and improve it.

Tony and Matt are 2 greedy SOB's !!!! They have truly let the industry down. All google will do is destroy the greatest thermostat and the greatest detector every invented.

A bit dramatic don't you think?

----------

I believe the only reason they bought the company must be that Google wants to plant some kind of surveillance bugs inside these home appliances.

I have a tin foil hat I can sell you

You comments seem reasonable...but Google isn't known for making many stupid investments and losing bunches of money.

One presumes that they have some idea of what they're doing...although $3,2 BILLION does seem...ah...a bit excessive.

But then, that's why Google has lots of money, and I don't!:p :(

Hello, Moto

The good news for prospective Nest owners is that they'll likely be able to buy the hardware a lot cheaper soon. I imagine Google wants to get these suckers into as many homes as possible to start mining "anonymous" data.

By next Christmas, the Nest thermostat will probably be selling for $99 or you can bundle and get a thermostat and two smoke/CO detectors for $179. That's a lot easier for the average person to swallow than $249 for one thermostat and $129 for one smoke/CO detector.

How exactly is this company worth $3B?

Google is out for total domination. Amazing how many people seem to be A OK with it.

Just as amazing at how many people feel the same way about Apple and want all other tech companies to disappear except for Apple. :)

Its a very good buy. Home Control with your smartphone is going to be very popular.

Google can also mine a lot of data for energy consumption if data can be uploaded.

There's probably a lot more reasons for Google buying this than meets the eye.

There had better be more reasons than meet the eye. As a return on investment, $3.2 billion is a ridiculous price. Nest is not the only maker of smart thermostats and appliances. This is about to become a very, very crowded field.

Now Nest will use Android. You'll be able to root it, add widgets, see the weather, time and date, it'll have NFC, it'll have an 18MP camera that also shoots 4K video, be 3x bigger, it will use Google voice, it will have a stylus, have multitasking, split windows and it will be able to make calls.

I don't think it's worth anywhere near $3.2bn. So that would have been a waste.

Google today is like Microsoft 20 years ago, throwing lots of money around without any apparent plan. It didn't do anything for Microsoft and I doubt it will do much better for Google.

I know some people feel grumpy over the fact that google may mismanage and destroy nest or find new ways to get personal data and annoy us with ads, but I do have a bit of optimism for the potential for google to do the "internet of things" correctly, or at least cover the things I want from it. Particularly, I want at a glance stats on my house's various energy usages as well as security and live updates on break-ins, and much much more. All these things obviously exist separately, but if a company could truly create an ecosystem, I think there is a lot of potential there. Apple hasn't seemed as interested of late, so my hopes lie with some other company such as nest which is now google's, for better or worse.
