Crazy stuff!

I will say that fragmentation hasn't manifested itself across multiple Android devices I've owned as a user (nor has it using iOS apps either).

I bet the tech blogs are loving all these click generating rants!

Edit: on another note, I remember those here that called Google desperate for calling out Apple at Google I/O this year. How times have changed!

This talk about OPEN is not related to the code or licencing if you haven't figured out yet.

No? Then why do they reply with "mkdir android ; cd android ; repo init -u git://android.git.kernel.org/platform/manifest.git ; repo sync ; make"

android will eventually turn out like windows... there is no possible way that the developers will be able to test all the different combos of hardware and software versions that are going to be floating around.

They had to test over 200 different device configurations for tweet deck now just think of how many combos they will have to test in a year or two.

It was 200 difference ROMS (it wasn't 200 different devices, it was different roms including rooted roms) reported from the open beta.

You know, Jobs might come of as a self-righteous prick, but I’ve always been fond of these pungently overt comments of his. They seem to always stir up the industry.

Historically, Jobs has always been right on target with these comments.

lol, what the hell :p, why does steve do this? Lately Apple has been taking shots at everyone, and that really annoys me. Now I prefer iOS over Android, but the Android OS is the next best thing..

Even if it wasn't meant to be taken so seriously, I don't know why Steve would say that..

lol wut?

So the developer found it cool that people have their choice of what android device they are using and that many of these people were using their client.

And you took a that as them not admitting its difficult? How is it a nightmare? What evidence can you support that this means its a nightmare?

Maybe for 3D gaming apps...but for basic apps like a twitter app you are not going to have issues really across the many devices.

Do you develop for the iPhone? Having a couple of devices is absolutely essential for testing because things DO break. Even a big company like Apple still releases buggy software. The amount of configurations and setup every single user might have are endless, even in a very tight ecosystem like Apple's. How the heck am I supposed to properly ensure that my app runs fine on that:

Because there are two sides for OPEN here:

1. Code.
2. Wants and needs.

What people want, what Goofle wants and what mobile carriers want. 1+2 is not equal OPEN here.

The more times I hear Jobs open is mouth the more I think he is just like the point hair boss.

Completely clueless on how things really work.

Apple also develops software. I would think that they would have a clue about supporting numbers of different devices on a platform. So let's see how easy it is to support games across as many platforms...

I said, games are tougher....you don't have to echo my words when i'm not denying that.

Same way PC developers have been doing it for years. Tweetdeck did a good start with an open beta.

But honestly, again, when its just a java based app, its going to run fine on the vast majority of devices. When you start coding 3D games i'll agree, it will be difficult. If someone wanted to play a lot of games on their phone, i would easily not recommend Android.

Yeah. The man has a wickedly barbed tongue and a Jupiter-sized ego but he's so damn right. It's the biggest love/hate relationship ever.

That is quite the list. Open means that you don't need people to create custom ROMs for you to do what you want.

There is no truly open mobile OS.

Steve is brilliant at marketing.

Unfortunately - Steve is a PR hot mess and liability.

He needs to know and respect the difference between facts and spin when he opens up his mouth.

Absolutely Open Source != Open Systems

The carriers are ruining Android

This is what opens means to me (who knows what google is talking about). Android is open source.....anyone could take the core android OS and do whatever they want to it.

If google does not approve of something they won't put their market place on it or their other apps, but you are still free to do with android as you wish.

Thats all.
