Ok I'm actually looking forward to this. I want to see Google push Apple into taking the Apple TV out of the whole "hobby" phase and get serious about this market.

Hopefully Apple TV will see an update real soon after this and bring it up to 1080p among other things Google TV promises to offer.

The whole premise at the beginning of the ad is flawed:

We don't have to reschedule meals because a show is on at 7:30pm....... haven't the people at Google heard of PVRs?

Anyways, I already have the internet on my TV- I have a MDP to HDMI cable that I use to hook my MBP up to my 40" Samsung.....

I am quite sure that if Apple had done this everyone would be calling the devise revolutionary.

I think that's sort of the point: Apple wouldn't do anything like GoogleTV.

The main thrust of that demo is that people shouldn't have to choose between their computer and their TV. So Google's solution is to combine the complexities of the computer AND the TV. Yes, I'm sure that's going to work out just fine...

Honestly, if you can't find something to watch on a modern cable system like Comcast, you have more problems than GoogleTV would solve.

Who watches TV anyway? :D

For a service that is to launch this Fall that includes hardware it is a pretty pathetic way to announce it. I think someone in Google just produced a cartoon so they could test market the concept to see if there was any interest out there. Other than a few thousand to produce a cartoon and a few letters between TV manufacturers saying they are open to using their names in an announcement, what has Google actually done?

This really shows the difference in commitment between Apple and Google. AppleTV may not be big yet, but at least Apple has the guts to test the concept out with a working hardware device and functioning service.

Maybe Google should buy Hanna-Barbera. :D

Apple Tv

You know, I'm not sure why so many people want to take issue with the Apple TV. We have a Samsung 63 LED in our living room and use the Apple TV like there is no tomorrow. The thing delivers nice quality pictures, i rarely have problems with it and since getting it my buying of "hard copy" movies has dropped probably 97% versus Digital Copies.

I think the Apple TV is a great little device that just needs more love :D

Then again maybe i'm misreading everyone's statements but it seem like the little white box needs more credit than it gets..

As for Google, yawn, someone said it best, they always introduce cool sounding stuff but does it ever really stick? Me thinks not

Now Apple, Well Apple Just knows how to deliver

At least for us, we love the Apple TV in our home, got 3 of em, living room, bed room and guest room

Cheers! :)

Seriously, if we all stop using Google, will they get off their asses and actually update their crappy search engine.

Maybe if we stop buying iphones, ipods, and ipads Apple will get off their asses and actually update their crappy pro line.

"Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has always been delightfully direct, and he didn't hold back at Google's I/O conference: talking about Sony Ericsson with Eric Schmidt during the Google TV launch, Sir Howard noted that the Xperia X10 is the best-selling handset in Japan, and that "when you beat Apple, you're dominating -- it's the new definition." Strong words from a gadget titan -- we'll leave it to you to debate their veracity."
:D

What an impressive feature set! Thank you Google for finally figuring out a way to do what we've already been doing for years with a XBox 360, PS3, MacMini, any computer running Windows Media Center with an HDMI port, etc.

Of course it won't surprise me at all if this thing is an amazing success. Not because it brings anything new to the table whatsoever, but because of good marketing.

After all, good marketing is what brought Apple back from the dead.

Maybe Apple will update the Apple TV soon, but I doubt it will be on account of Google's giant bellyflop. May Google TV will run the Chroid OS.

I agree with the idea that this device seems quite different than AppleTV, with what looks like mostly an internet based UI as opposed to AppleTV's iTunes server type integration.

What concerns me most is the quality of most web video. With everyone going with larger and more high quality TVs to view there satellite/cable feeds, OTA, and Blu-ray, what's currently available online that can compete in terms of quality?

As much as I like the idea, and we all knew things were moving in this direction, I'm not so sure the internets, by and large, is prepared.

to all guys suggesting iPhone OS for a future apple tv reincarnation:
iPhone OS is all about touch! well, you might say, android os is touch based as well. i think that displaying touch optimized apps on a tv screen is just ridiculous. of course, there comes a new sdk, let's see what interaction paradigms it carries.
apple, on the other hand, i guess had even hard feelings about running iPhone apps on iPad, although it's both touch based. they would never come out which such a half baked solution.

running a browser on a tv though surprisingly convinced me, thinking of the new html5 capabilities. maybe apple's going to implement that.

one last thought: why the hell is google sleeping with flash lately?? just apple slapping?

I think that the ideal is that you use a touch based controller (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc.) to control apps on an iPhone Os based AppleTV.

No, because its the only damn one that anyone uses. Its brilliant math theyve put behind it, but NO expansion. It remains practically unchanged since day one. Oh no oops, I forgot; they added a side bar with everything, books, videos and images, and we also have the one above as well with images, videos, books, etc.! OMG, google is so innovative.

Here's to hoping that some of those far fetched rumors about Apple making a search engine actually come to fruition. Long shot, but one can only hope.

Yeah because google is so crappy right? Needs more glare, drop shadows and reflections... No thanks, I love the form follows function. Last thing I want is for Google Search to become the bloated piece of garbage that iTunes has become.

This won't take off because the Neilson family ratings system would be fu****. They are the ones that the television people and the advertisers depend on to let them know what multi demographic criterium is watching their shows. Each Neilson point is related to so many families, statistically, and that is related to MONEY!!!! BIG MONEY!
The entire tv industry would be turned upside down. With their precious EYEBALLS all over the place. Talk about fragmentation!!!!
The tv industry would be a fool if they allowed this crap to happen.
Google has and is creating an ad consumption model that cannot be sustained by the naturally limited factor that generates the money: The consumer.
In other words, IMHO, Google has created more product than necessary.

I think this is great and hope that apple actually finally steps up, but this is still evolutionary. I still want my lower priced cable service that I can watch whenever I want without paying an arm and a leg for it. I also want to be able to watch it on all of my devices.

Our Apple TV is critical to pulling up any movie we have and I too rarely buy optical anymore. With a 2 1/2 year old and a 7 month old, putting on a movie for our eldest is that easy. And of course at other times, family photos and background music.

doh

You can pretty much bet that Apple will completely abandon Apple TV. It's a 3 year old hobby, makes no money, has few customers, and judging by "the competition," isn't going anywhere either. They can redirect those R&D resources into something better that has a higher chance of success. Consumers are reducing their set top boxes, not adding to them.

AppleTV=The Cube
:D

I foresee Google winning the technology race in the end.

in the end?!? the END?!?

like 2012?

hate to break this to you buddy... unless the world blows up, there's not going to be an "end" to the "technology race."

and in the "meantime"... google will be replaced with some other tech company. because that's the way it works.

gee, i wonder if all these companies know they are aiming at a finish line, at which point all technology will have been discovered, so they don't have to make any more... and they'll declare a WINNER.

seriously man... "in the end"? that's just nonsense.

Prove it.

all apple really needs to do is make iphone/ipad apps available on apple TV and it's game over.. you'll already have a multi-touch controller! ;) I think this really would scare the hell out of nintendo, sony, microsoft, and google!

Exactly. Apple is building a $1 billion data center in North Carolina, and it probably isn't just for storing people's iPhone vacation videos.

iTunes made the iPod and iPhone a success. And now iPhone and iPad are successfully leveraging more than 8 years of Apple's work on iTunes, iTunes Store, and the App Store. But so far Apple TV hasn't taken off like iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Why not? I think it's because Apple is just using the current Apple TV as an experiment.

Apple does small experiments to get experience with new technologies, then develops and productizes that technology. Back in 2006, Apple published a few games for the iPod. This is about a year before iPhone OS had even been revealed to the world. You could purchase, download, and install them through the iTunes Store.

I though it was a nice idea, but it seemed like just another marketing checkbox feature. Not a big revenue stream for Apple at all. A year later, Apple released the first iPhone, with iPhone OS software updates through iTunes. And a year after that, Apple added an iPhone app store to iTunes Store and called it the App Store.

So you might say that the original iTunes iPod games were a "hobby" for Apple. But when iPhone OS products started shipping, Apple was ready to get serious and scale that hobby up into a profit center for the company.

I suspect Apple will do the same thing with Apple TV. Almost all the pieces are in place. iTunes Store, App Store, iPhone OS, the Remote app, and deals with content providers and hardware suppliers. The things that aren't quite ready yet are high speed internet access (not yet widespread enough in the US) and Apple TV itself.

Unlike Google, who seem to be after all the TV manufacturers they can do deals with, Apple should do an exclusive deal with just one company. They've already got deep connections with LG for their LCD display panels, and guess what: LG also makes TVs. Might be a good fit. Apple could do a multi-year exclusive deal like AT&T with iPhone in the US for widescreen HDTV Apple internet televisions.

I think the final thing that Apple is waiting for is market chaos. Like the MP3 player market in 2001. Many competitors, all of whom had terrible software, some of whom had nice hardware. Apple released the iPod, then iTunes, and now they have 72% market share. Apple is probably waiting for the internet TV market to become bigger, with more profit to be had, then fractured between Google, Boxee, and whoever else is on the bleeding edge. Then Apple will step in and seize the big fat middle.

I wish you'd answer my question and tell me how its bloated?

What does that even mean anyways?

Its size? You dont like having a 300 mb application?
Its speed? Sure it takes like 2 seconds to switch to different screens sometimes. Is that horrible?

Please tell me intelligent sir.

No, I want it to improve the way it searches and the options I have for searching so that 99% of my results aren't garbage with what I really need buried somewhere on page 20 of my results. They haven't done anything since day one and since they are the defacto I can bet they never will, they'll just branch out and fail at other things.

But hey, go work for them so you can get chair massages or relax in the mediation room while you innovate NOTHING.
