Read through some of the features, nothing really new here. Feels like a normal Android update to me. I suppose the AI stuff is cool if you use voice assistants (I don't).
If it would work as it supposed to work you would use and enjoy it. If you don’t ever use AI or voice recognition I’ll trade my old Nokia for your iPhone for free.

There is no way Apple is going to catch up in this game. Unless Apple copies all of Google features and then some, which it won’t. The winner of the AI game win the phone game.
Google is able to copy Apple in a matter of months but Apple never seems able to keep up in speed Google is releasing. And don’t start about quality of the products because reports have proven that android is more stable than iOS.

Using AR inside of maps is really cool.

Now THAT is super cool and useful. Especially here in SF where I'm dealing with 9999-way intersections. I keep having to quickly run down a street just to look at my movement on the map and see which one it is.

Wow. Those demonstration calls were incredibly impressive. Apple feels so stagnant and uninspired these days, especially after seeing what Google has managed to accomplish here. The scary thing is, I don’t think Apple even realizes, much less cares, how far they are falling behind. For now they continue to rake in the dough with higher prices on iPhone, dropping features (ie: all ports from the MacBook) while maintaining price point, and nickel and diming users with services. Meanwhile Google is doing some pretty amazing and inspired work.

Yes, they’re innovating and putting their profits to work instead of only pleasing investors.

Do you even believe that statement?!

Google set the stage for this long ago - I mean years ago, much more than 2-3. They started hiring recent PhD grads at the cutting edge of AI, back when Apple wasn't interested and largely wasn't letting their AI team be involved in the general AI community. Stuff like what is shown takes a long time to build up, I can't imagine Apple will catch up. That said, Apple does have the resources to make a big push but I still don't get the impression they are as serious about it. It wouldn't surprise me if in 10 years it's considered Tim Cook's biggest failing

I use Siri on my HomePod and it works great there. I just would never use it in public, I feel like it's obnoxious.

I wonder if Apple can get a huge contract to remove Siri and allow Google Assistant to be iOS’ official AI? Talk about the irony of that? Would be incredibly unrealistic since Apple has too much pride to do that. Plus Siri just needs to compete, which takes a ton of time and resources.

With the way Apple has fallen behind here, you'd think implementing a useful AI assistant is impossible. Clearly, it isn't. Apple should be embarrassed. Postponing and delaying products and features seems to be the new norm. For these reasons, I might be looking at an android option to replace my iPhone. What a joke.
I'm feeling the same way... I have so many Apple products that making the switch won't be easy, but with the multitude of let downs by Apple in the last few years combined and Apple's clear shift from being primarily motivated by "making great products that just work", to "making as much profit as possible" means it might be worth it to start the transition. I'll wait in see what Google comes up with for the Pixel 3...

Google Photos has been my most relied upon app on my iPhone since discovering the app. The Apple system doesn't make sense for me. I take lots of photos and videos, and with Apple you pay for a certain capacity. It's sort of like Photo Stream in that there's a limit, it's just that the limit is much bigger and allows video. But there's no long-term archive functionality like with Google Photos which is unlimited. And importing to the Photos app on the Mac you are similarly constricted by the size of whatever your Photos library on a local drive can hold. My solution is to back-up with Google Photos and a safety backup using Image Capture to an external hard drive. I've been very impressed with Google's app.

Like someone posted in another thread about Google Assistant last week, it's absolutely asinine that Google Assistant is capable of turning an iPhone's flashlight on or off via voice command while Siri simply replies, "Sorry, but I'm not able to do that." Apple's own on-device assistant can't do what a third-party's voice assistant can when it comes to controlling the iPhone hardware. Apple continues to add jokes to Siri's repertoire, though, so there's that.
It's very difficult to believe in "privacy issues with Siri" mantra when you read something like that

I had no idea that was the case. Although the feature isn't groundbreaking or anything, the situation itself is insane. Apple should be embarrassed.

Yeah it's getting harder and harder for Apple to mask/avoid it's failing's with Siri. I hadn't had the Android itch in a couple of years, but here lately it's been developing.

Yep.

I am surprised to hear people would seriously consider switching platforms due to Google's assistant potentially being better than Siri. Personally, voice assistants are a current fad that will fade over time. I see people eventually wanting less and less interaction with technology and automation becoming much more useful. I am sure Google has some advantages here also, but certainly no reason to switch platforms. Once Apple isn't the best overall option when it comes to performance, security, privacy, apps, ecosystem, and support, I'll consider switching. Voice assistants? Come on.

If you say automation is the future can you confidently say that Apple is going to lead in automation? Because their history in AI in the past few years leaves a lot to be desired compared to googles. Google is going all in on AI and automation

Goggle assistance, like Siri, is looking obsolete. Amazon and now, Amazon/Microsoft are looking very strong. With a lot of tie ins to computers, speakers and home control of TV, heating, cooling, security, voice ordering, etc. from anywhere in the world.

I concur with this statement...I really hope Apple doesn’t pull the privacy/Security BS card at WWDC for the reason why Siri will continue to suck behind Amazon and Google

I'll see when the time comes, but I am confident Apple will bring something to the table when the time is right. I am really in no rush when it comes to this stuff, plus I think privacy is a huge deal. I am good with Apple taking it's time in this area. I currently use HomeKit for smart home automation and it has been the best platform for that.

the biggest problem with google calling up a restaurant to book a table is that it's so cool i'd want to hear the conversation. Apple - you need to seriously up your game!!!
