Microsoft is up 29% over 2013? what did they do that sparked this?

If iPhone 6 is hugely successful, could that alone push them back to No. 1 or would it take a lot more than that?

I think when Apple release the 4.7" and maybe the 5.5" iPhone 6 in September, this time next year when the 2015 world's most valuable brand list is released, it will be Apple at the top. iPhone 6 will dominate with the larger screen. It will have iOS 8 as well. iPhone 6 + iOS 8 = Apple back at the top again.

I don't want Apple to be the top dog. I want them to always in second place. That way, it gives them a reason to make more incredible products.

Do you honestly think it matters to them? It is only public perception that they produce great things as an underdog.

Those are the 2 reasons I went Galaxy S5 vs iPhone 5s. I wanted a bigger screen phone for navigation in the car. And liked some of the customization (widgets) of Android. It's an OK piece of gear. But the BS that is Android is still there and, had Apple done a 5.1" OLED iPhone I'd have been all over that. The Galaxy screen is gorgeous and easily beats the iPhone in color, clarity, and wow! factor.

I say all that as one huge Apple fanboy.

Exactly. Now I imagine the iPhone 6 will have a Retina+ Display. It's been 4 years since they've been using the Retina moniker and it seems time they increased the pixel density, clarity, color etc.

Bigger screen, a little more customization (maybe) and a BETTER screen and I think people will be sold.

Most people I know get an android phone because they can get a cheap / free one. Phone size is the reason for some people but cost is by far the major reason why people get an android phone. Making a larger phone and tweaking IOS will increase market share but, will not affect the market as much as you think it will.

True, but they'll still sell boatloads. I don't think Apple will ever have that "cheap/free" phone. The 4S being free is great. They're still selling a lot of those.

Either way, this is about to be another record launch for AAPL.

honestly?.. has your idevice stopped working?. Have the Apple stores shut?.. Erm.. nope.. are you saying that to feel emotionally positive in your life you need the company that made your mobile phone to be classed as superior to all others in a useless web survey?.. Have I got that right?.. I think somebody needs a hug!. Xx

Yikes no thanks. I don't hug trolls.

And no, you didn't 'got that right'. I said that because I think Apple needs to seriously step up their game with everyone catching up and passing them. There hasn't been anything that made people say "wow I really want that" in a long while.

Judging from your comment history maybe you should find something better to do than harass anyone who expresses an emotion towards Apple. Lighten up "fella" :p

Oh no....

Some analysts used subjective analysis to rank companies. I don't care for these studies, they don't really show anything. All they'll do is scare wall street.

Wait, so apple went down and analysts wonder if apple can keep redefining tech. What the hell has google done to redefine tech? They made a super popular mobile OS which is part of why they are making so much money but they haven't redefined anything. Why is apple held to a standard that no one else is?

What does anyone else have that makes people say "wow I want that". Why does apple have to do it when no one else is?

Who cares

Who cares who is number one all these companies should get together find cures and invent medication & technology for third world poor countries

Google Glass is not the future

This ranking appears to be the end of Apple as we know it. It's all because Apple doesn't have Apple Glass to challenge Google Glass. The world has seen the future and Apple is nowhere to be found.

/s

Please. Google Glass has been "out" for years and not once have I seen anyone wearing/using it. FAIL.

How is Microsoft even on this list? As far as I can see, they're not exactly "redefining technology for consumers."

Because that's not the deciding factor.

To me these studies are a bit like the current state of tv ratings. Ratings for TV look at a highly select group of folks as the answer to the countries tastes. Only now are they figuring out that there's a whole giant universe of viewers they have been ignoring who are yakking all over social media. So they are starting to look at that as well. In particular you'll notice that almost every show has a hashtag and they publish it on many forms of SM. This is to try to get folks to use it to make it easier to pin down that yakking.

On the brand side it would be the same, plus which names are dropped more for page hits. Apple and Apple related terms show up more than any other as page hit fodder. Even some diehard Android sites are guilty of dropping 'iPad Killer' in a headline to try to lure over Apple users. That's way bigger 'brand value' than a companies ads etc.

I think Apple's (rumored) acquisition of Beats and their new products coming out this fall will help them retake the lead.

I disagree about the whole Beats thing, but agree about the new products.

The Beats thing needs to be confirmed and we need to see what its about to say anything about its 'value'

Not sure what this all means, but I know one thing...All Apple has to do is release a bigger screen iPhone and toss in a few customizable bells and whistles for iOS 8 and it chops Google and Samsung's legs out from under them. Apple's hardware design still dominates it's competitors on mobile devices and there are still no PC manufacturers that come close to the Mac's fit and finish. All of this Apple hatred has been brewing based on screen size and lack of customization in iOS. If those things change, what does Android and Samsung have left other than a hunk of plastic, carrier logos, and bloatware?

ummmm, Price?

And PC still dominates Macs by more than 9:1 in spite of not coming "close to Mac's fit and finish".

Part of what makes both dominate is price. The masses appear to like price more than "X mm thinner" or even the joys of OS X or iOS superiority. A bigger-screen iPhone launch is definitely going to appeal to a chunk of the masses who must have a bigger screen but would love to have iOS running on that bigger screen. However, to imply dominance is only a bigger screen away is ignoring that other variable that matters even more (most?) to the masses.

All Apple has to do is release a bigger screen iPhone and toss in a few customizable bells and whistles for iOS 8

Or they don't, because the bulk of the world doesn't care about either of those.

What they care about is stability etc. Give us an iOS that doesn't have major bugs on day one like that wifi killer in iOS 6, doesn't have major battery drain issues like iOS 7 did because of the added background app refresh and so on. Give us a screen you can use outside. Give us repairable sleep wake and volume buttons so folks with out of warranty devices won't have to pay for a whole damn replacement. Give us an even better oleo phobic screen with better scratch resistance.

these are things that everyone can care about. Not whether you can skin the icons on iOS 8 to make it look like iOS 6 etc.

----------

That is literally ALL Apple has to do. I don't think people realize how many people switched to Android ONLY because it has a bigger screen. MILLIONS of people!

I'm curious, how exactly did you contact this millions of people to determine definitely that this is why they switched to Android and that they would switch back if Apple makes a bigger iPhone. And were you able to determine just what size is 'bigger' in these folks eyes.

----------

If iPhone 6 is hugely successful, could that alone push them back to No. 1 or would it take a lot more than that?

We would have to understand the exact methodology of the folks that created the study to know that. And we'd also have the answer to why Google went up 40% when it seems like they haven't done much this past year

Microsoft is up 29% over 2013? what did they do that sparked this?

Finally released Office for the iPad

Please. Google Glass has been "out" for years and not once have I seen anyone wearing/using it. FAIL.

I finally saw one in the wild. In an Apple Store. Guy looked stupid.

I rather like the notion of the Google Glass in a way. I can see value in things like walking directions or even historical notes about places if I'm doing the tourist thing. And I can see where say a museum could have interactive stuff going along with pieces or guide you on a tour based on being able to detect your location. Sure you can do it with a book etc but why not let folks keep eyes up and not stuck in a book or a phone.

My issue is that the devices are ugly and I am not keen on this whole zapping the image into my eye stuff. Give me something that is basically a pair of shades (with some kind of privacy coating so folks can't see the images I'm seeing) with the images going onto the lenses, perhaps optional ear buds for listening to audio. And yes a camera would be nice also, even if just a non recording one for things like Word Lens or even reading signs to the visually impaired. The main power would be in a phone or tablet connected via Bluetooth. Little solar strips for added power might be cool also. But keep it mainly to being a 'heads up' version of the Pebble. Not a FaceTime gig etc.

Do you think so? Honestly I don't know if my eyes are just receptive to AMOLED screens differently but I see them really weirdly. They also look low res with strange saturated colours. Ive tried S3 to S5 and other brands I just don't know why it looks so odd and un-natural to me, a bit like if a Mega Drive had a screen built in. Seen as everyone else likes them so much I figured it was just my eyes.

Thankfully for my eyes Apple will be sticking to LCD even in a bigger phone screen as they've got so much white in iOS7-8 that'll last about 2 hours with an AMOLED screen!

I think they see Google and similar companies as a safer bet long term. With Apple its more profit, but a lot more competition with consumers, analysts and investors expecting innovation at every turn. But thats the very nature of technology verses already established services and technology thats already in place.

I hope everyone who reads MacRumors reads this post.

That is literally ALL Apple has to do. I don't think people realize how many people switched to Android ONLY because it has a bigger screen. MILLIONS of people!

The second thing is customization.

If Apple just does both of those things, iOS 8 + iPhone 6 are going to blow everything else away. And of course Apple has the best designs.

I can't wait.

And I don't think people realize how many people switch to Android because they genuinely like the OS better. ;)

What does anyone else have that makes people say "wow I want that". Why does apple have to do it when no one else is?

Lots? Take a look at this year's new flagships. Xperia Z2, HTC One M8, even One+ One and the new Surface 3. You can tell they're all trying and it shows. I'd still prefer iOS/OS X any day but I can't deny that they're all very well designed products with amazing specs.

Rumored products like the 'iWatch' everyone's been talking about the past 2-3 years, almost every tech company has their own version now because they thought that was Apple's next big thing. Ever since big products like the iPhone and iPad were first introduced all eyes have been on Apple, that's why they have to do it, and I really hope they do. Remember the days when Apple keynotes were actually fun and unpredictable, nobody knew what to expect. Now it seems to just be a keynote to confirm leaks and rumors. :(

Looking further down the Top 10 I'd say that McDonald's, Coca Cola and Marlboro aren't exactly "redefining burgers / sugar water / cancer for consumers", either.

I don't understand brand valuation. The dominance of Google certainly makes it a valuable company, but does ubiquity automatically make a brand valuable?

Is there a friendly brand manager out there who can help us out?

The technical definition would be the net present value of the incremental discounted cash flow due to the brand itself. For example, if Apple made the exact same products, but they were "white box", they would generate $x in profits. Slap an Apple logo on these same units, and Apple generates $y in profits. Add up the projected difference between $x and $y over time and you get the brand value.

Of course, that's theory. Estimating that accurately in practice is impossible. So I'm sure these peple use a BS methodology.
