I think when Apple release the 4.7" and maybe the 5.5" iPhone 6 in September, this time next year when the 2015 world's most valuable brand list is released, it will be Apple at the top. iPhone 6 will dominate with the larger screen. It will have iOS 8 as well. iPhone 6 + iOS 8 = Apple back at the top again.

I wonder will it be enough to entice back the long-time converts who left the iPhone for an Android device.

For some folks 5.5 inches isn't enough.

And how do you feel about dropping $200-$300 on your new phone only to be met with the bloatware that comes with Android? The NASCAR racing app that can't be deleted for example? And what about the fact that the next Android OS update will drop and you may be waiting 6 months for it to be available for your phone model? Not to mention the fact that Android only exists because Google needed a way to sell more ads and keep their search marketing ad revenue high as the world transitioned to mobile devices to access the internet. I can't call Android the superior OS for those reasons and that isn't even factoring in my issues with the hardware most of the OS runs on. Junky plastic devices stamped with Verizon Wireless and AT&T logos. Yuck. To each their own though.

NASCAR app? Are you making this up? I've had several Android phones and none of them had a NASCAR app. Core apps on Android are updated independent of full OS updates. Who cares why Google brought Android to the masses? Seriously, who actually cares? Polycarbonate or aluminum, again no one cares. Just like no one really cares if the phone is millimeters thinner than the previous iteration. No one cares about a logo on the phone. Well there is one group of tech fans that care about a logo.;) You are right about one thing. To each his own. Different people like different things for different reasons.

I think one focus Apple needs to address is affordability. The only reason why at least 60 percent of people would settle for second or third best, is cost. Why else would anyone want to buy any Samsung products?! If apple can find a magical way to get their prices across the board down 25 to 30% the people who have been forced to buy knoch-off’s and cheap clones could get top shelf, high quality cutting edge products. Though, I see people in some of the most ghetto areas who at first look poor and on public assistance who have the latest IPhone I can’t even afford!

From a US perspective, Apple is no more expensive than any other premium brand of tech. I don't know why everyone buys Samsung products but I can tell you why I did: Control, Customization, Screen, and Size. It fit my use case. The crassness of your quote aside, who can't afford an iPhone? You can get an iPhone for as little as $0. That top shelf, high quality, cutting edge product you mentioned? Yeah, it's sold in Walmart; the epitome of top shelf.

The NASCAR bloatware was a Sprint/Android thing. Was just using it as an example of junkware Google allows carriers to preload. And yes, people care about hardware design, build quality, and carrier logos everywhere...it's a big reason why many of us on this site buy Macs over their plasticy, Intel Inside-sticker sporting, poorly designed PC cousins from Dell, HP, and others. If no one cared everyone would just buy that $599 HP hunk of junk laptop down at Best Buy and move on with their lives.

And when it comes to who is getting my hard earned money, yes I care that Google's motivations are centered around pay-per-click advertising revenue over creating great consumer electronics that enrich peoples lives. That has been Apple's core business focus for decades and high margins or not, they will get my money over a company who wants to force feed me more ads on the web and suck all of my user data from me to drive their business.

You mean like the stocks, newstand, games center, compass, etc apps that can't be deleted on an iPhone? At least on an Android phone you can easily alter the entire look of the phone and get all those apps off your screen and never have to deal with them again. With Apple, you aren't even given the option.

If you don't think Apple is out to get your info just as much as Google, you are deluded. You might want to look into a little something called iAds. Hint: It is from Apple and centered around pay-per-click advert revenue. It amazes me that there are people out there that still believe Apple has their best interests in mind. Apple doesn't give a rats ass about you or me.

Same here. Besides this just being the opinion of one research company, who cares about those numbers as long as these tech giants keep producing beautiful, well-designed and useful products to enchant us.

Personally I kind of miss the Apple of ~10-15 years ago, when they were the underdog. Underdogs have more incentive (by virtue of being 'hungry') to come up with mind-blowing products, and are free from the pressures that 'expectations' by consumers for continually outdoing themselves, bring to those at the top.

Not to say that as we speak, there aren't thousands of people at Apple working at the next great products; I'm sure there are. But there's always that possibility of complacency insidiously creeping in, at companies that are at the top in their field.

As a famous person once said: "Stay hungry, stay foolish"; we can only hope that Apple will at least heed the first part of that advice!

I miss their 2006-2008 era. They kept defying the odds and making amazing things, blowing us all away.

Complacency is my bigger.

In a word, possibly. At the very least, they appear to be trying.

I agree, these are indeed the innovative things that Google does. But I don't think these are the main reasons Google is more valuable than Apple. The reason is without a doubt Android, and that's not really something where we can safely say Google is innovating.

I read your quote and giggled. I showed it to one of the guys in my marketing department and he laughed and said, "That's why we (Mktg) get paid the big bucks." Aluminum doesn't mean build quality. Apple products break just like HP, Samsung, Microsoft and other vendors. My iPad and MBA have been running fairly smoothly for close to 3 years. So has my Samsung phone, HP desktop, Dell laptop, Nexus 7, etc.

Bolded from your quote: Read that sentence you wrote. Think about what you intended it to mean vs what it actually means. The overwhelming vast majority of people choose the "junk" from HP and Dell. Not only because of price but because they are also choosing function over form. There's really nothing that can be done on Apple products that can't be done on a comparable Windows machine.

"... creating great consumer electronics that enrich peoples lives." That line from your quote really got Kevin from Mktg belly laughing. Kevin is an @%$-hole btw. He said he could picture Jony Ives saying that exact line in a brightly lit room with the background blurred while sappy music played under his voice over. Only there would be more adverbs that end in -ly: seemlessly, beautifully, painstakingly, alumineeumly. That Kevin. Sometimes I just want to punch him.

As for Google's motivations? They collect anonomized data for generating ad revenue. Just like Apple and a whole host of other companies. They should be penalized because it's their main source of revenue? You don't think Apple wants iAds to have that type of success?

And how do you feel about buying a new iPhone only to get useless apps for you, like Stock, passbook (since it's not implemented in half of the world), that can't be deleted?
And what about the fact that you hate the next iPhone update because it's going to make your phone definitely slower and with graphics you just don't like, but you're pretty much going to be forced to install it because whenever your phone has anything wrong, the solution will be "update to the latest version"?
Not to mention that the iPhone only exists because Apple needed a product to sell to make a lot of money and keep their revenue super high, enough to reach the number 1, while adding their iAd network as an option to developers and rip them with a 30% margin on anything, even subscription not even related to Apple.
I can't call iOS the superior OS for those reasons and that isn't even factoring my own issues with the hardware (home button, anyone? Tinted screens?) the whole OS runs on. Junky aluminium devices, that bad not even carriers want to stamp their logo on it. To each their own though.

See what I did there?

Ha. I'm in marketing as well so Kevin and I would probably get along. But there really is no debating that Apple is a hardware company that has always sought out to make great consumer electronic devices and Google is an online advertising company. Yes, iAd came about after the iPhone had gained popularity as a way to better monetize the user base and provide a way to lower the price of the $9.99+ apps that people weren't buying. iAd hasn't really taken off anyway and was never their primary motivation for creating phones in the first place.

In the end, Android is essentially Windows and iOS is OS X. One OS is licensed to multiple hardware manufacturers and comes in every shape and size imaginable while suffering from some of the pitfalls of that fragmentation. The other is made by the same company that makes the hardware it runs on, allowing for a more integrated and seamless experience at the expense of not having every conceivable option available. I choose an iPhone and iOS for the same primary reasons I choose a Mac over comparable Windows machines. I understand my comments illicit a reaction from the pro-Android crowd, but working for a company that does a lot of business with Google, I feel strongly about what Apple represents (marketing or not) versus what Google represents.

Google does a lot of cool things, even if many are in prototype stage.

Note how IBM is the third on this list, and they haven't sold consumer devices since 2005.

Oh trust me, you wouldn't get along with Kevin. Kevin doesn't get along with Kevin.:D If he wasn't so damn good at his job, his boss would have cut his body into small pieces and composted him in our work garden. Our peppers would be just that much more spicy and our kale would taste more kale-y. As I think about it, we might get more yield from the entire garden if he was buried in it. The argument for murdering him is getting stronger. (he's reading over my shoulder - that's why I'm being so nice. Seriously, he's an ass). Early Android fragmentation may have been an issue for developers but it's never been a consumer facing issue. There are no pitfalls. Once a person buys a phone it will work just as well on day 400 as it does on day 1, regardless of whether or not it receives the latest version of the OS. My S3 is just as strong as it ever was, even without Kit Kat. Same goes for people with older iPhones still running their original iOS versions. They may be a little slower by comparison but they still work. Being an iPhone user doesn't mean forgoing options. That's why there is a thriving jailbreak community. Neither Apple nor Android users fit a standard profile. Sometimes, like me, they are the same person. As for Google, hey, I can respect your opinion about them. I don't agree with it but I can respect it.

I'm not pro Android just like I'm not pro Apple. I am pro 69Mustang's use case. My Apple stuff communicates with my Android stuff and they both communicate with my Windows stuff. It just works.

Kevin says I should throw some flame on this by saying "Apple causes Global Warming" or "Apple supports the use of MSG in Chinese food". I told you he was a turd.

What would you call innovation though? An existing platform can only ever be evolution really. Take the Porsche 911, compare a 993 version to the 997. They are literally poles apart to drive and to live with. Is it innovation or evolution?

The move from Jellybean to KitKat ran a lot quicker on my old Nexus 4 and gave approximately ~30% better battery life under usual use (battery would die at about 9pm compared to 5pm) which suggests tremendous change under the hood. Visually it is very similar, it's what you don't (and shouldn't see) that makes the difference. Since moving to IOS7 on my iPhone the battery life has dropped significantly and I can't remember a period longer than 52 hours without it locking up and then crashing. Innovation can be more than skin deep.

User experience and intuitiveness are the big areas now and for me personally, Android is thrashing IOS.

Not sure which Rom has NASCAR on it but I suspect it must be a custom one from one of the mobile providers. There are loads of bloatware free ROMS on the developer forums should you feel that way inclined. Google play version phones have raw android as does the nexus line - no 6 month waits for new software. Blame HTC, Samsung, Vodafone, Verizon etc.. if you don't like their skinned versions.

Bloatware is down to personal opinion anyway. I'd like to uninstall apple maps, newsstand, safari and passbook... You say feature, I say chaff.

A few people have said this already, but Google Does Cooler Things.

If you take a moment to look at the many many new technologies and cool things that Google has been doing over the past few years, you will notice a revolutionary change that Apple has not been competing against. Apple stuff is good. I know. I have an iPhone. My girlfriend has an iPad. I have a Nexus 7 tablet, and I can say that I like the Google Nexus very much. There is a lot to be said for all the activity that is happening with Google, and I am very glad that I am a supporter of it.

Does it really matter who is #1? Lets keep things in perspective. Both Google and Apple are American companies. I think that alone is great. And Microsoft is making a comeback also an American company.
For those who wonder how...well i only saw one guy ask that....just because he doesnt have a Microsoft product doesnt mean nobody is buying them.

I have a Windows 8 laptop and love it, my Wife has a Windows phone, i am looking to get a Lumia Phone to go with my Nexus 5 and the new Surface Pro 3 looks great and id love to have one of those too.

Yes we also have a iPad Mini...which is my Daughters now, and we have a 13" MacBook Pro that i love as well but it is bulky and heavy compared to my Yoga 11S.
I love it that Microsoft is improving their phones, and tablets and the App store now has 250,000 apps.

We have a few Samsung products too but id rather the American companies thrive more.

Apple Design Sux

The saddest part of Apple is that it now is an inferior product. They have payed so little attention to user friendliness and functionality that they have been runover by android. For example if I'm in the Safari Browser and im in yelp and an address pops up and I tell it to map it I can only get written turn by turn directions. The stupid thing doesn't even know how to open up Maps or Google maps and show me and speak the directions to me. Or if I am in Reminders and have a phone number that I want to call the stupid thing can't even figure out it's a phone number. Not to mention the worlds worst UI for setting up an alarm time. Not to mention what an idiot Siri really is. I don't think anybody over there has told the Emperors that they have a stick up their arse. Not to mention that wa all now know that they are giving all our information over to the government. Smart iphone BS. Get it together UI design and interoperability design group or I'm gonna come over there.

#1 for being just plain old awesome.

I think their maps are wicked, and the glass thing is awesome, the nexus 7...plus they are just a great search engine.

after that press release. #1 for what exactly?

Android.
Search.
Youtube.
Maps.
GMail.
Drive.

6 hit products. That cost you nothing. This is why Google is the most recognized brand.

Apple has 2. iPhone and iPad. 3 if you want to count all their Macs. And they cost an arm and a leg.

Apple just sells plain looking hardware and call it "design". Jony Ive gets paid millions to "design" a rectangle with a circle at the bottom of it. Apple software is a joke.

Google actually helps people get things done.

Needs to look up something? Google.

Need directions to somewhere? Google.

Want to watch the latest videos? Google.

Need an email so people don't ridicule your provider choice? Google.

Apple hasn't nothing on that. Customers want what Apple doesn't have, plain and simple. They've been selling you the same phone and function since 2007. I guess that's their genius.

Google has like literally every base covered. I would use Chrome over Safari every day of my life. (and everything else google too)

I don't even use Maps on OS X. I'm so trained to open Chrome and go to Google Maps, Apple doesn't stand a chance in this area. They should have just let Google do their thing.

I love a list like this. I use all of the top-4 companies. 3 for personal use and IBM at work.
Can't live w/o my Apple devices.
Can't live w/o my Google services.
Can't live w/o my Microsoft products.
Can't work w/o my IBM solutions.
:D:p
It sucks that so many are butt-hurt that Apple isn't #1. But after all, this is MacRumors, not TechRumors.
But I have no doubt Apple will jump to #1 again. Once OS X 10.10 comes out. iPhone 6. iOS 8. iWatch. Once all that is released I think that Apple will jump to #1 again.
We'll see what happens. But for now, I'm happy to see all those companies at the top. Good times for tech geeks like myself.
