Will it have the sex..? As in, as Steve Jobs said when the PowerBook was released. What makes the iPhone appealing is its looks - minimalistic. One button, silver bezel, all glass front. Shiny. That's sexy.

The G-Phone will need to be sexy and fashionable. I look at the G1 and it just looks a bit cheap. I look at Google Wave and although it is a beta, it lacks any sort of sexy GUI. It just looks kind of plain.

We'll see soon though..

That's very true. If the phone is sexy, perhaps something like the Palm Pixi (You can't deny it looks nice), and comes with nice processing power, a glossy Capacitive Touchscreen, and some killer features, Google's got this one in the bag.

Google releasing their own phone, even through a third-party, would be a step towards alleviating the recent problems with Android that have surfaced - that being that there are too many flavors of Android and many hardware configurations that have to be supported. Apple has already shown that controlling the hardware and software leads to less headaches for end users. Google needs a baseline from which to move forward with Android, and this phone could be it.

Why do we get so much non-apple news leaking into mac rumors these days? I have engadget for that...

This shows Google have balls. They license their OS and then release hardware that will be competing with the people they licensed it to. Apple would never do this in a million years.

Mark my words: it's gonna be just like "Plays for Sure" at a certain point.

What is more worrying is to see Eric attending Apple's board meetings, getting a lot of good ideas and then launching yet another stupid An(Droid) phone...and no, he did NOT recuse himself from every iPhone-related meeting.

In fact, he discussed iPhone topics at Board meetings until the middle of the iPhone's first generation device...well enough to suck all good vibes from a superior device.

GOOGLE IS...DEAD.

Only the OS Apple won't let others use.

You're correct. Apple would never license their OS. But they would let software people write software then Apple would write software to do the same thing. Or they would have private companies selling Macs & other Apple products, then they would open Apple owned retail stores.

How do you know he didn't have a positive input on the iPhone board meetings and why do Apple still used Google services on the iPhone if it IS... DEAD?

EDIT - Can I also mark your words on Microsoft, Adobe et al being "DEAD" (as in they have actually died)? Thanks! :)

Apple HAD name recognition, but most critics spoke of nothing but gloom & doom. And they were actually building the thing. So Google is going to pay someone to build the phone for them? Or perhaps, someone came to them and paid them to call it the "GooglePhone" -- whatever... it's not the same thing. GOOGLE is good but they're not in the same league with Apple .... I'm sick and tired of people trying to link them like they're the Twins of Technology. They're not.

God, I hope not. Everything Google touches DOES NOT turn to gold -- Android is pretty good. It's getting a moderate start, but compared to the success of the iPhone (now in stage 3), it really can't compare. Google may come up with something that wrangles a few bucks from Apple's mitts, but it won't be earth-shattering.

Unfortunately you are comparing apples to oranges here. More like, comparing software development to hardware development (although well that can be argued to some extent). In it's own field (data processing), Google has achieved more than any company out there. Google has some really smart people in there.

Look what happened to Chrome. Right now they are finally adding extension and user js support, but even with their first release, which was nothing more than a feature-less web browser, a lot of people moved to it, just because it was made by Google.

People just like Google, and I guess they deserve it.

Seriously, what's there to compete with anymore these days? Consumers pretty much base their decisions on the computer platform they are using.

For instance, am I born and raised stupid PC? I'll go with the Droid or whatever Google provides in future?

Is Mac in my blood? Yup. I'll take the iPhone please so it can sync up properly to my Mac.

You sure have bad grammar by saying, "For instance, am I born and raised stupid PC?". Besides, I was "born and raised stupid PC" (also used a Mac though) and I bought an iphone. I didn't even own a Mac at the time I bought an iPhone. Your theory is flawed.

The use of Google services has nothing to do with the release of a phone that is probably based on confidential design information obtained at Apple meetings...many Google services are actually good and will continue to be used by Apple as part of an ordinary business relationship.

Get back to me in less than 5 years...it's easy to foresee Apple buying those companies...

Wow, Google's "incredible" visual design prowess (nice logo!) making the transition to industrial design? Should be a winner.

I wonder if we're going to see a repeat of the Plays For Sure > Zune debacle, where Google eventually decides to go to the fully integrated hardware/software model and freeze out other hardware makers? I can't see the inevitable fragmentation of hardware and Android variants ("The OS with a thousand skins!") being a positive thing from a consumer perspective.

I have always loved Google, but their recent forays ("We have a ton of money sitting around - what should we try to clumsily conquer next?") have a distinctively Microsoft-esque disoriented vibe about them. And, of course, I worry about having a single gatekeeper for the world's (and my personal) information.

So you make bold statements and back them up with "probably"?

Did you know that "IS DEAD" is in the current tense? Wouldn't "ARE DYING" be more apt?

Did you even think about what you were saying as you typed this, or were you just too hopped up on Fanboy juice to realize the absurdity of your comment?

So, will Google force us to view an Ad before we can answer a call?
:):):):):)

Actually, they'll probably automatically put the call on hold and play a 10 second ad for both you and the other person. Only after it's done will you actually be able to talk.

This simply reinforces that Apple was right all along, making the "whole widget".

I wonder what the "Android pwns teh iPhone" crowd thinks of this Apple-ification.

Wait. No, I don't.

You know how in nightmarish sci-fi films everything is driven by advertising? I fear Google - and by their monkey-see, monkey-do nature, Microsoft - are taking us down that path. I can't wait to be retinally scanned and have street billboards talk to me by name.

I'd rather pay for some of my services than get them for free and be subjected to endless marketing brainwashing. But maybe that's just me.

(Of course there's cable television, where I both pay for the services and get subjected to endless marketing brainwashing... :( )
