You know how in nightmarish sci-fi films everything is driven by advertising? I fear Google - and by their monkey-see, monkey-do nature, Microsoft - are taking us down that path. I can't wait to be retinally scanned and have street billboards talk to me by name.

I'd rather pay for some of my services than get them for free and be subjected to endless marketing brainwashing. But maybe that's just me.

(Of course there's cable television, where I both pay for the services and get subjected to endless marketing brainwashing... :( )

You hit the nail on the head! I would gladly pay a little more to ditch the brainwashing...uh, I mean, advertising. Unfortunately, that will never be an option.

Awesome. As a big user of Google Voice, if there is seamless integration with Google Voice and Gmail, I may seriously consider it when my iPhone contract is up in Oct 2010.

I agree. To Google it's not about the gadgets/phones so much as it's about how to get more people to use their services... in this case, GV is the new killer service that lots of Telco's fear. The Gphone/Android, i think is just part of Google's plans to take on the telco's services (as well strengthening their ad services).

I can't believe this garbage is gaining traction. When has Arrington ever been right about a rumor? He must have said at least 10x that Digg would be acquired. Whatever happened to his Crunchpad that was on the verge of release? Arrington is the worst rumor whore out there and is doing this for page clicks. There is no indication that Google is coming out with it's own phone and it would piss off every other manufacturer and carrier that is not involved in it. Arrington hits a new low and it's hard to believe that was possible.

Seriously, what's there to compete with anymore these days? Consumers pretty much base their decisions on the computer platform they are using.

For instance, am I born and raised stupid PC? I'll go with the Droid or whatever Google provides in future?

Is Mac in my blood? Yup. I'll take the iPhone please so it can sync up properly to my Mac.

ayyyy,.. not always true, but for the most part it is.. sometimes I wish had never bought a Mac, never got an iPhone, and.. well..., never got caught by evil apple ;) to put it in Sideshow Bob's words: i've grown accustomed to 'his' face ;)

@LagunaSol: Yeah, I guess, everything that is not made by Apple is evil and bad, and a terrible idea and what not.

@guy saying Apple will buy MS: lol.

For instance, am I born and raised stupid PC?

Nice touch, calling PC users stupid. Stay classy fanboy!

Yep, I agree, balls or cluelessness! It amazes me the manufacturers didn't make sure this would never happen before using Android. Maybe they really knew this was coming and didn't care. I hope M$ will copy Google instead of Apple for once and start making PCs lol. Actually one day if the PC makers continue to tank maybe they just might do that. That would be interesting!

The way I see it, Google seems to want everyone using their products and services. They don't want to lock in their hardware/software, the way Apple does it in everything, or MS have done with their software.

Will it have the sex..? As in, as Steve Jobs said when the PowerBook was released. What makes the iPhone appealing is its looks - minimalistic. One button, silver bezel, all glass front. Shiny. That's sexy.
That's where Ive dominates - true passion for the aesthetics, and you can see it in his work.
Unless Google's designers have the same passion, it won't have it.

Well they have name recognition, but do they really want to open this can of worms?
They have name recognition in the blogosphere, but they had name recognition with the G1. The average Joe thinks that was the first bona-fide 'Google Phone'.

Well done. ;)

i don't see a google phone

I guess it’s possible, but I don’t see Google doing this. Do they have, or are they implementing the associated IT systems necessary to be in the product business? Can they keep track of inventory? Can they send an invoice? Can they collect money? Do they have a distribution capability? Apple had that in place for years because they were in the computer business but still had to significantly upgrade all of that in order to get an iPod to Walmart or the iPhone to an AT&T store.

I would move from the iphone to a Google phone....The only thing i would request, is that they make it easier to plugin to a mac and sync! I realise that iTunes wouldn't work, but at least offer a software download to make it easier.

Google - bring it on...looking forward to it

oh...and enable Google Talk for the UK please!

Here's an article from TechCrunch. They're speculating that it may not be a full-fledged phone, but one driven by VOIP & Google Voice:

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/18/the-google-phone-may-be-data-only-voip-driven-device/
That right there might be what it takes for the wife and I to move to Android. IMO I think that's a huge longshot, but we'll see. But I'd be all over that.

What I don't get though is that AT&T is having issues with coverage and capacity as it is. If they added something like this seems like it would bring the whole network to its knees (arguable it already is in some areas). But that $20 price point sure seems unlikely, but very awesome.

They already ARE in the product business.

They sell a lot of Google search appliances. These are computer systems that are smaller versions of what Google uses to provide the web search feature. Our company bought a system to index it's internal web pages. When I search our company web from my desk the search is done on Google supplied hardware that is located within our own building.

None of our internal web is accessible to the outside so it can not be search using the normal google search.

The City of Los Angels just signed up to buy millions of Dollars worth of Googles Office apps and the hardware to run those apps. Again this is a "product". The city did not want their data on just any randopm Google computer so They bought a google data center to host theior own web based apps

Google sells a lot of this kind of stuff, copies of their free services that run on your own copy of a google data center.

To all the people making lame jokes about having to listen to an ad before you answer a call, etc., name one single Google product that does something like this. Name one single product that locks functionality until you are subjected to an ad.

But I bet all of you LOVE Hulu.

Please let this be the ZiiEgg. It is market ready with a nice "Your Company" here feeling. I can see Google buying ZiiLabs and marketting their egg as the Google Phone.

Wait a second?

I thought AT&T didn't even have the bandwidth and network to allow us to talk using VOIP or stream TV?? Now someone is gonna pay way less a month and take that advantage? Its not like they are gonna be able to improve their network that much by the time this thing would be released.

Wow, If this is true I can't even begin explain how many ways this is just wrong.

My understanding is that AT&T doesn't have the 3G bandwidth to do VoIP, or just about anything else:p. The thing is that you can do VoIP with dial up, and 2G (or even 2.5G) which uses a different frequency, is more than capable.

I could easily see AT&T opening up their 2G spectrum for unlimited use, as it's pretty much not being used right now*. Unlimited calling, texting, and slow internet for $20 is a complete game changer.

*Ok, so most older phones use it. It's not as over-crowded as the 3G spectrum is.

Apple apologetics breaking their arguments down to this idea of inanimate sexiness, look no further. NOW that should be the Google Phone!
